Gary Usher Story

What do you think about this?

Gary
I am very excited about it ! It’s been a while since it
was last issued as the double disc.
This new set by Sundazed is a great release
because it captures the look and sound of the original 3 albums.

Q2
Did your father use the guitar and the piano for writing songs?
Is he whether to have written songs also at the house,
 when the idea flashed

Gary
My father wrote songs from the late 50's all the way
through his career until he passed away in 1990.
He was a very gifted songwriter but with a unique approach.
He only used instruments to convey an idea or feel until it took the shape
 he invisioned.
Then he would use other musicians to get it up to speed.
He used both guitar and piano in the early days.
He liked the early Telecasters but his favorite guitar was a 1967 martin d-35
 that I still have.

Q3
His composition style is what kind of influence to
 have had on you ?

Gary
His songwriting style had a large effect on me
because we would constantly talk about writing structure Lyrically,
 he always challenged himself.
His production work in the later years was groundbreaking.
So I think his use of songwriting was very much part of his lifestyle.
We wrote many songs together around the time he started writing
 with Brian Wilson again.
He taught me the trick about songwriting is that you put as much of
your heart and soul into the creation of a song,
but you must know when to let it go, and let it find its place.

Q4
Your father taught you the trick about songwriting is that
”you put as much of your heart and soul into the creation of a song,
but you must know when to let it go, and let it find its place ”
This is a very important sentence.
This is the required spirit when someone makes something.
This can become big teachings for you or us.
 Also for everyone.
We are learning the big thing from the posture in which
your father tackles works and efforts.
And we consider that what is necessary is just to express it how.
Your father taught what was not understood if someone did not do.
This is Spirit of Rock and Roll. Isn't it ?

Gary
Yes I agree. All music is a gift.
And when it is shared between people it amplifies all of the elements
 contained in the music.
Consciesness thrives on sound and rhythm because it allows your soul to see
and feel things you cannot see in the physical world.
My father embarked on a spiritual journey through his music.
It became an outlet for his questions as well as his statements and concerns.
I was lucky to be taught many different things using music as a backdrop.
My dad and I would be mixing a song together,
while teaching me the principles of layers, colors, tensions and subtleties.
Many things everyone needs in day to day life.

 Yes

Q5
What kind of father was your father at the house?
As a father. As a musician.
 Was he a strict person?
Or the wonderful father who loves a family?

Gary
My father was a very complex man. I don’t think he ever
considered himself a musician as most of us do.
He did however consider himself a producer.
I think that might be a better description of his actual profession,
although he wore many hats in his 30 year residency in the record business.
He lived by most accounts a private lifestyle based around his spiritual
beliefs, and his small circle of family and friends.

Q6
Was your father always working like the Japanese ? Ha ha ha.
Do you have the recollections which went to travel together with father?
Is there any episode which remains in recollections?

Gary
Yes, in America we call it a workaholic !
When he worked in the studio he was completely immersed in recording.
He would work very hard, long hours until completion,
and then he would spend his off time in the yard gardening !
As far back as I can remember, he would take me to the studios for
 recording sessions.
I remember going to the early Capitol studios, and RCA in New York.
I was at all of the sessions for the Bruce Johnston solo album as well as
the California Music project with Curt Boettcher. I really liked Curt.
We recorded in Santa Monica California and everyday we would drive on
the Pacific Coast Highway, where all of the songs from
 Surf Route 101 came from.

Q7
Yeah ! I'm also workaholic ! Ha ha ha.
You were looking at wonderful musician's recording scene
 from a child time.
I am also doing research of Bruce Johnston and Curt Boettcher.
If there is episode in their recording, please let me know.
Bruce Johnston's memory is very ambiguous.
It is very difficult to get to know his episode.
And there are few people who can tell the recollections of Curt.
He is also the legendary person who created the movement
of California together with your father.

Gary
 Curt Beottcher was awesome.
Firstly his talent alone was unquestioned.
He and my father made great music together.
During the recording of the project to be known as California Music,
I was captivated by him because he was like a rock star to me.
In fact, every time Curt did vocals I sat in a chair right in front of him
in the vocal booth with my headphones on and watched him
sing every word. I will never forget his personna.
He smoked ciggaretts and drank Heinekens as
he performed the most amazing vocals.
All the while my dad was at the board getting him to cut it better and better.
There was always a tension between Curt and my Dad,
but both seemed to have attained the same level of notoriety,
therefore, they were respectfully forgiving to each other.

Bruce Johnston on the other hand was a very genuine, nice guy.
As he cut his album “Going Public” he was riding a huge wave of success
with his song “I write the Songs” done by Barry Manilow.
This was in the late 70’s, so some of the songs had a disco flair,
but I always thought his version of Pipeline was great.
Also the song Deirdre from that album had Curt all over the vocals.
I actually had a voice over in one of the songs called Dance with me.
But it was cut in favor of an older sounding voice.
Both of those albums were recorded at Sounds Good studios
 in Santa Monica, Ca.

 California Music

 「Going Public」
 「I Write the Songs」
Sounds Good Studios

Q8
El Segundo (May 1963), Hawthorne (Aug 1963), Mission Hills (Feb 1964),
 Sherman Oaks (Oct 1964)
There were the places in which your father lived.
He has moved no less than 4 times for a short period of time.
If you remember what kind of place there were, please let us know it.
For example, it is that the intimate musician also lived in the neighborhood.
Do you have father teach it?
Even when your father is private, please let us know the intimate musician.

Gary
Throughout my life we moved a lot.
I don’t think it was by design, but it just turned out that way.
Much of it had to do with his success.
In the late sixties we moved into the Hollywood hills in a very elaborate
 canyon house.
It was there that many musicians would be around.
Especially guys from the bands he was producing, like the Sagittarius,
The Millennium, the Eagles, Stevie Nicks.
Joe Walsh bought that house from us,
and we moved to yet another canyon farther away from
what he called the "rat race"

El Segundo (May 1963), Hawthorne (Aug 1963), Mission Hills (Feb 1964),
 Sherman Oaks (Oct 1964)

 Joe Walsh

Q9
Your father was buying the new car according to success.
Please let us know the history of the car which your father owned.
 If you know that.
Have you ridden on father's dress up car ?

Gary
It is true about my Dad writing 409 because it was the newest engine,
and he wanted one to race.
He had a cool 55 black corvette just after the success of the Beach Boys.
One time I was riding to KRLA with Roger Christian in his Jaguar.
It was the first time I ever went over 100 m.p.h.
 through the streets of Hollywood.
As my father’s career moved into the 70's, he bought only Cadillacs.
He loved the big El Dorado.
He would buy the newest model every year.

Q10
When was it that you understood clearly about your father's occupation?
We think that his business differed from other common musicians
and producers. For example, one work is completed from
a complicated process. How did you consider your father's work?

Gary
I was aware of my father’s profession and influence very early.
 Around 8 years old.
Music was our common interest, so naturally I was curious and watched and
listened very carefully to the way he performed.
I knew very young he had a very special place in American Music History.

Q11
Your father was the person who loved rock n roll.
We surmise that he also liked country music besides it.
It is because his style changed from a certain time.
Of course, there was a movement of folk rock or fork in the background.
Your father supported change of the music scene very sharply.
It is whether supposing that was right,
He liked country music and other music styles positively.
Some points of contact with a country musician are in his career
like Hank Snow - Human (Written by Gary Usher)

Gary
You are Right. He did have a fair amount of country influence,
but as you pointed out he was very keen on ulterior formats.
Any deviation in the norm always sparked his interests.
He was very much ahead of his time.
Especially in the field of A/R.
He still doesn’t get enough credit for his work on the groundbreaking
album by the Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"
I think this is largely due to people not knowing my fathers
true body of work. You see, he always approached a song
 from its roots.
Then he would let the song determine its own path.
So weather a song was country or electronic,
he was able to apply the right creative texture to let it find its place.

しかし彼は Byrds のアルバム「Sweetheart of the Rodeo」において

Q12
I read many interview of The Byrds member.
They are telling. Your father was a wonderful able producer.
At that time They had many problems.
For example The Leadership, The difference of each one's opinion,
 member's trouble.
As for these, each one of talents conflicted.
 I guess so.
And Columbia records was also carrying out great expectation to their sales.
However, they were only situations with their difficult recording.
Your father edited each one of talents intelligibly in these difficult situations.
 This was very hard work.
Those days AM radio stations and country listeners are reported to
have felt sense of incongruity for "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"
Was the gap in the consciousness of just country music listeners
 and rock music listeners?

Gary
I think it was an obvious solution by Columbia at the time to introduce
this “fused” record into the mainstream.
By this time country music writers were starting to get songs placed
 in the pop charts.
The natural progression was to go the other way with it.
So, Columbia had an act on the roster in the Byrds, with the ability to
crossover and a record in the can.
Look what happened 10 years later with the Eagles.
I think there is a natural, safe element in a country song.
Not just in content but in structure.
You know, begins well, ends well type of thing.

Q13
Rock n roll always needs to be ventured.
Moreover, a market is unmaintainable if the adventure is not carried out.
This album is the masterpiece of Country Rock now.
However, giving a theme to this work what contributing to
 rediscovery of roots music greatly.
But in the ironical thing , Columbia records and The Byrds were
holding the financial problem at that time.
We could evaluate this album justly now.
Your father drew their talent. He has put it on the suitable place.

Gary
Yes, fortunately as time has smiled on this record, it would appear
like he had put everything in its proper place,
but at the time he was dealing with the feuding band members
and a general change of direction from a songwriting standpoint.
My dad was an incredibly strong personality,
so I would expect the sounds and arrangements to be in proper order to
 stand the test of time.
However in some of his recordings most noteably in the later 70’s,
the records are appreciated only by the purists.

Q14
In late 60's,The recording style is very unique.
 Even Major company is so.
It is the opposite of systematic recording.
It is very experimental and was carried out mostly with the danger of being
 incalculable.
Your father's work was maintaining a certain fixed quality in such a situation.
 This is wonderful.
Because, he understood consciousness change of youth culture,
and transition of market by his past experience.
We are the generations who got to know the Vietnam War at the child time.
 American. music industry was changing.
It is difficult to correspond according to growth of music listeners.
However, your father tried hard and was equivalent to listeners.

Gary
During this time period it is important to keep in mind that
the recording process was changing by leaps and bounds.
It went from 8 track to 16 then to 24 in a short period of time.
This effected many aspects of the business.
By increasing tracks just think how songs were able to grow.
As a result the lush pop sound came alive.
Studios got bigger and so did production budgets.
It was said that the Millennium LP “Begin” was the most
 expensive album to date.
My dad was certainly responsible for most of it.
He absolutely embraced the new creative freedom that
 this new technology afforded him.
I think by the early seventies he believed that by pioneering sounds and
adding the right pop elements the recording scene would continue to be
in front of the music buying public.

Q15
Various styles theme music exists in the history of American rock n roll.
Theme music which your father created that introduced the life style of
 Southern California.
Those music is the record which the performer in the past and
the creator left. In the time It changes quickly and goes.
but it has the brightness which never fades
.It keep shining in listeners' mind.
Because, eager efforts are transmitted from the music
 which your father created.
These songs has the rock & roll spirit

Gary
It is nice, isn’t it? Capturing a sort of timecapsuled consciousness.
It brings feelings to you that are only awakened when you hear something
that was very important to you.
Much of the time like in my father’s case, this is done unintentionally.
He was driven to create what he was hearing in his soul,
but many times you can not tell if it will have a lasting effect on people.
You just do what your heart is telling you, and hope that
 people enjoy your passion.
Gary Usher had a very fortunate career that continues to reward us with
 timeless inspiration and enjoyment.

Q16
When your father was young, he was on the register in the U.S. army.
He is stayed in Japan then.
Have you heard the thing of Japan of those days from him?
(Curt Boettcher also lived in Japan those days. It's very interesting thing.
That is because his father was stationed to Japan as a military man)

Gary
Yes, he did spend time in Japan, but I believe most of
his time was spent in the hills of South Korea.

Q17
Please let us know your most favorite music with his work.
 Why is it?

Gary
This is a hard question because I am a true fan.
Firstly, he had distinct 'eras' of work. the 60's 70's and 80's.
So, I have favorites with each.
His surf and drag sound is truly fantastic.
He had the right musicians, and the means to market the songs
that captured a whole movement and feeling of
 the Southern California youth culture.
Same thing with the 70's. The Sagittarius and the Millennium are
nothing less than brilliant flower pop records.
Again reflecting the climate of the time.
He had his share of struggles in the 80's adapting to the technology,
but with his synth-based solo album Celestium,
he was truly on a mission to take his ideals into a new medium.
But if nothing else, "In My Room" is truly a classic song. Perfect.

Q18
Please let us know your birth date.
Do you have a brother or sister ?

Gary
 I was born on March 31st 1964
Yes Two Brothers and a Sister.

Q19
We surmise that you learned many things from him besides it.
Consideration and stance to the market.
Do you have some directly taught from him?

Gary
I have made my living in the record business to this day.
I can only imagine that this is a direct influence of my Dad.

Q20
We found your guitar play on Brian Wilson's - Let's go to heaven in my car.
Did you learn the guitar from your father?

Gary
Not really. Oddly enough, he could only show me basic chord structures.
But I quickly became a guitar nut and learned playing in my bands.
I soon could play guitar much better than he could.
He then would get real mad at me if I didn’t play something exactly
as he asked ! He was hard to work for because he knew just what
he wanted things to sound like, and if you didn’t play it,
it would be a very long night.

我々はブライアンウィルソンの「Let's go to heaven in my car」で貴方の

Q21
We think that Brian Wilson is a very special person.
He is the person who is easy to become nervous.
Does he complete a work by the special method?
When recording various kinds of parts,
 Does he condacut ?
Is there any episode when you participating in his recording?

Gary
Yes, Brian Wilson is a legend.
I have always been fascinated by his unique presence and
his spiritual connection to the masses from his musical expression.
He has had the fortune and burden of carrying such a karmic debt
 in this lifetime.

I worked with Brian for almost a year in the privacy of House of Usher studios.
As both My Father and Brian began to retrace some musical steps
and embark on yet another sonic journey.
Both men were surrounded by the anticipated demands of the Record Industry.
Many refer to the results of this collaboration as the “Wilson Project”
It is well documented in Stephen McParlands book of the same title.
It was a hard time for both, but It was the start of Brians evolvement
 into his present status.

When both Brian and my father were on a creative cycle,
 it was fantastic to watch.
Brian hammered out block major chords with standard loveable hooks,
and my father would conduct and pilot the momentum into a pop format.
Brian would have a lyric or phrase and my dad would embellish it.
After the sessions, we would strip the parts down and re congregate them into
workable structures. This is where you could see both of them drawing
from the rich palate of musical genious they both had access to.
We went into Record One in North Hollywood to record a song called
“Lets go to heaven in my car”.
At this point the Wilson / Usher project was highly visible and
there were a lot of people around at those sessions.
A really crazy atmosphere, with a film crew and all the record execs.
My dad did his best to keep his composure,
but he hated all of the “helping hands” around.
But when It was time to record my guitars Brian and my dad were
rocking out telling me to just go for it.
I played it like a heavy metal guitar track over a pop song !
I remember thinking this is nuts! It was used in the movie Police Acadamy 4.
As well as Brians self titled debut solo record on Rhino.

 Yes,
Lets go to heaven in my car」

Q22
Have you met Al Simms (American International Pictures) or Dick Dale ?
How were you concerned with the beach movie of the 80s?

Gary
No, I never met Al; most of the people associated with AIP were not
regulars around my early home life.
However, I am still very close with the Frankie Avalon Family, as well as
 Annette and Dick Dale.
As a guitar player, Dick is such a great inspiration to me.
The Beach Party movie “Back To The Beach” was being worked on
 throughout the Early 80’s.
Frankie and Annette were working hard on scripts and production with
Paramount Pictures while I was in High School with the Avalon Boys
 (Frankie Jr. and Tony)
By the Time it went into production, I was out of High School working at
a local record store, and doing sessions with my dad at night.
Paramount obviously wanted Gary Usher’s involvement, and we started
pre-production on the songs for the new beach party movie at
 our House of Usher Studios.

I remember when my dad asked me what I thought about working with
Stevie Ray Vaughn. I couldn’t believe it!
I was such a big fan of Stevies.
I knew the Dale / Vaughn / Usher collaboration would be great.
I was very lucky to be a part of those sessions.
We did all of the backing tracks at our Home Studio,
and the main guitars at Record One.
Stevie even used some of my equipemt in the studio.
We completed a dozen or so songs for Back to the Beach,
and most did not make it into the movie.
After the music was completed I auditioned for a part in the movie,
as a band member in the musical scenes.
My Dad told me “You should do this because it will be something you can
 always look back on”
You may not know this, but my father too, was cast in all of the original
 Beach Party movies.
He is many scenes if you look carefully.
So, it seems we have that in common too.

 Dick Dale

House of Usher

 映画「Back To The Beach」の為の歌入れや録音を完成させたんだ。

Q23
Did your father teach you the composition style?
Or you tried hard or able to get sound style from his work ?

Gary
I definitely am influenced by his songwriting technique.
I use the same tablets for writing, and the same tape recorder for ideas.
I think you can hear it in my songs too.

Q24
Are there any musician and contact which your father introduced for you?
Please let us know you musician's career and recent state

Gary
I have a recording studio, "House of Usher Studios" at my house like he did.
I do commercial work and soundtrack material.
I have 2 bands that I play in:
Sprayface is my surf band which I am releasing my first album on my label
 House of Usher this summer.
I also play locally with my band the Jetstars around Southern California.
You can see them both on Myspace.com
