目を閉じるとそこは New York で、耳を傾けると
そこは Califiornia でした。
まあ、そんなこんなをいつも考えながら飽きもせず
懲りもせず年がら年中 Surfin’ だ Hot Rod だ
Summer Sound だと聴いている自分が可笑しく
なるのですが（笑）
イタリア系ヴォーカルグループが多い New York
ですが、彼らは日常的にカンツォーネをこよなく
愛しており、その歌い方が彼らの基礎でもあります。
ファルセットヴォイスが歌劇の裏声テクニックで
あるので Frankie Valli がそうであるようにイタリア系
アメリカ人はファルセットに力を込めがちで、高音パートで
さらに上を行こうかというような歌い方をします。
反面的にドイツ系白人が多い California では
Brian Wilson や Rick Henn がそうであるように
ファルセットに力を込めるというより、調和 ハーモニー
としてのファルセットヴォイスと考えてるようで
意図的にノヴェルティーっぽく演じる以外では
あまり高音を強調していないようです。
Four Freshmen のファンだった Brian Wilson は
グループハーモニーに魅せられていたのでしょう。
実際 “Don’t Worry Baby” では Brian Wilson は
高いキーで歌ってはなく、当時の彼の歌う歌の多くは
イメージされてるほどファルセットでは歌っていません。
New York をルーツに持つユダヤ人の Phil Sloan
ですらドイツ系白人のコーラススタイルを
身に着けています。ただ Phil Sloan と言う人は
声帯模写、物まねが上手いという特技があるので
誰かの声の邪魔にならない調和ハーモニーが
得意だったのでしょうが。
Vanda 誌で紹介する筈だった未発表レコードの原稿が
沢山残っていました。当時何らかの理由によってボツに
なってた原稿でして、私はそれを何かに活かせようと
考えていました。それは盟友佐野さんへの供養として、
またこれらの音楽を次世代へ伝えるための場を求めて
の行為です。それらボツ原稿をベースに現在までに
明らかになった情報を書き加えて私竹内義彦はこの
ライナーノートを書き始めました。
途中、小林康樹ことコーちゃんの理解協力を仰ぎ
誤字脱字、解説の要望等を伺いながら補正しました。
雨が降ろうが雪が積もろうが Summer!! と吠えてる
私ですが、そんな私の苦労話を。まだインターネット
がそれほど普及されてなかった頃の翻訳サイトで
Indian Summer と入力したら「インド人の夏」と
翻訳されてとほほ～っと嘆いた頃が懐かしいです。
今では正しく「小春日和」といい具合に翻訳される
ようになり我々中古レコード業界もインターネットの
活用により日進月歩といったとこですが（苦笑）
そもそもが、音楽を文字で伝えるというほど
愚かな行為はありません、
耳こそ全てですから。しかし何かを感じて脳を
活性化し、想像する事でアンチエイジングに
なるのですから、文章からでも何かを感じて
もらおうと書いてみました。
ある意味、音楽を文字で表現しようとする行為は、
鉛筆のようでもあります。
頭が固いの、柔らかいの。頭が尖ってるの、丸いの。
いろんな個性と色がありますが、みんな一本芯が
通っていて、それは描く人の手によって
折れないように守られていて、真心をもって
書かれなければいけません。
そういう意味では結構真面目に書きました（笑）
ここでは「あ～だ、こ～だ」と長ったらしい
説明文を殆ど書き殴り状態で列記していますが、
これは須らく耳で音楽を聴きながら目で文章を
追えるに適した文量ではありません。
ただそこで知る事が出来る情報と共に聴いている
貴方に芽生えるパッションやイマジネーションが
これらの解説を完成させるプラスアルファに
なるようにと心がけて書きました。
音のバランスはとても悪いです。何故ならその多く
が私が録音してたカセットテープ音源のデジタル化
ですので。また収録時間短縮しようと Fade out
するつもりだった曲も処理を忘れてエンディング
で突然切れてたり、そこは御愛嬌ということで
まあ雰囲気だけでも楽しんでください。
ひとつよしなに。うふふふ

その昔 Rhino が The Sunrays のこの未発表音源を
入手した際には彼らのコンピで Dan & Jean という
ふざけたネーミングでクレジットされたが、その後
リリースされた The Sunrays のCDボックスに
収録され、晴れて公式音源化された曲。
何故この曲をクラシックスの冒頭に入れたのかというと
歌詞にある “Take me back to those good good good
old surfin' days” これこそが高齢化が進むレコード
コレクター達、そしてSurfin’ & Hot Rod music に
とりつかれた人達の願いであり、それを聴き続ける事が
アンチエイジングだという事なのだ。
The Challengers - Hot Rod Hootenanny (Vault V-910)
でも印象的に使用しているが意外と少ない
Four Seasons 風ハーモニーのサーフィンミュージック化を
ここで実現してるところも特筆される。
1963年のヒット “Walk Like A Man” のハーモニーを
アレンジして導入しているとこに反応した人は
立派な Surfin’ & Hot Rod マニアといってもいいです。

The Fantastic Baggys - Anywhere the Girls Are
(7: Imperial 66072) 1965
P.F.Sloan & Steve Barri 作品。
Barrett Strong の "Money (That's What I Want") と
The Beach Boys "Don't Back Down" をモチーフにして
Phil Sloan は The Fantastic Baggys の
名曲 "Anywhere The Girls Are" を書いた。
そしてその冒頭のファズのリフを引用したのが
The Kinks の "You Really Got Me" であるのだから、
Barrett Strong の "Money (That's What I Want")
無くしては Surfin' & Hot Rod と British Beat の接点
ですら無かったであろう。 The Kinks の Ray Davies
の弟のギタリスト Dave Davies は特に Phil Sloan の
ファンだった。The Fantastic Baggys のセカンドシングル
となった "Anywhere The Girls Are" ではアンプの不調で
生まれたという効果的なファズギターが使われており、
The Kinks の代名詞となった1964年の大ヒット
"You Really Got Me" のリフは The Fantastic Baggys
の "Anywhere The Girls Are" の冒頭のリフを引用している。
同様に The Kinks の "All day and all of the night"
のリフは Sloan & Barri が書いた Hal Blaine の
“Drums A Go Go” で引用しており、それらは相互の
カウンターリアクションによるキャッチボールで
あった事が伺える。

The Super Stocks - Thunder Road

1958年と1962年に Robert Mitchum がヒットさせた
"Ballad Of Thunder Road" を改作した曲。
Robert Mitchum の場合は歌というより語りに近い
Country Blues スタイルで、The Super Stocks の
このヴァージョンは Gary Usher のオリジナルと
言ってもいいようにメロディーを上手く加えている。
Jerry Cole の超絶ギターで幕を開けるこの歌は
Let Me Tell The Story （俺の話を聴いてくれ）
から始まる、親が造った密造酒を運ぶドライヴァーが
山間部で出会わした Thunder Road ジグザグ道
での出来事。魂を悪魔に売ったドライヴァーの物語。
この傑作は当時ではまだ珍しかったファズをかけており、
迫力のヴァージョンとなっている。
またギターソロも2小説残したところでブレイクしたりと
凄まじい作品に仕上げている。

The Customs - R.P.M.
(LP: Vault 104 mono / LPV-104 Stereo) 1963
1963年12月には Gary Usher 関連の
コンピレーションアルバム Hot Rod City
がリリースされた。このオムニバスでは The Customs
名義の Gary Usher のグループが
R.P.M., Competition Coupe, Hot Rod City,
54 Corvette, Nifty Fifty の5曲を収録。
そして The Quads, The Grand Prix らの4曲
が収録されている。この The Quads と The Grand Prix
では Boyce & Hart として人気作家となる Bobby Hart
と Woodies がリードヴォーカルを務めている。
彼は後の The Ventures メンバーで James Burton
に憧れて西海岸に出てきたばかりの Gerry McGee
とも当時行動を共にしていた。
アルバムジャケットでは俳優でレーサーの Tommy Ivo
と彼の愛車の Barnstormer が使われている。
Vault Records は、このアルバムの数か月前に
Jack Lewerke と Ralph Kaffel によって設立された
新興レーベルだった。1952年にカリフォルニアでレコード
配給会社を設立した Jack Lewerke と Ralph Kaffel
は4つの小売店経営もしていた。Jack Lewerke は
Jazz Producer として Atlantic Recordsで仕事をした
経験もあり、その当時から Phil Spector とも
共同作業をした間柄だった。産業と配給のノウハウを
知った Jack Lewerke と Ralph Kaffelは Atco での
全国配給権を得て Vault Records を設立した。
Richard Delvy は Vault Records へ出資をし、
同レーベルの最初のプロデューサーとなった。
Richard Delvy はその際 Gary Usher を引き連れて
来て、このコンピレーションアルバムを Shut Down
または Hot Rod Rally タイプのレコードとして
パッケージ化することを計画した。
この Hot Rod City は Vault Records から発売される
5番目のアルバムになったのだが同レーベルの
メインシリーズでリリースされた最初の12枚の
アルバムのうち、7枚は The Challengers によるもので、
2枚を除くすべてが Surfin' Hot Rod 関連だった。
The Customs 名義で収録した曲はどれも Gary Usher が
過去に The Four Speeds 名義他でリリースしてた曲だが、
この The Customs version も Gary Usher が
リードヴォーカルを務めたがバッキングが異なる。
こちらは荒々しくワイルドなガレージサウンドとなっており、
特に Stereo version では素晴らしいギターブレイクが
入るのが有名である。元 The Belairs のドラマー
Richard Delvy とキーボードの Jim Roberts が
The Challengers を結成させて Vault Records の
契約グループとなった。Richard Delvy は早速
プロダクションを設立し本件アルバムの企画を作り
レコーディングの指揮をとっている。その人脈で
The Quads と The Grand Prix の録音では The Belairs
のリードギタリスト Paul Johnson が参加している。

The Pyramids - Custom Caravan

プロモ盤しか確認されていない。プロモ盤のラベル3種。
まずラベル上部が Cedwicke とプリントされた盤。
次に Cedwicke Records に Promotional Copy とプリントされた盤。
Cedwicke Records に Disc Jockey / NotFor Sale とプリントされた盤。
California 州 Long Beach 出身のバンドで "Penetration"
1964年4月4日をピークに是米18位のスマッシュヒット
が有名だ。本件この曲は The Super Stocks
のヴァージョンが残っているホットロッドヴォーカル
の傑作だ。ただし Gary Usher は The Pyramids
のレコーディングには参加してない。

The Pyramids は1964年7月に公開された
映画 Bikini Beach に出演し "Record Run" と
主題曲 "Bikini Beach" を演奏している。
どちらも Gary Usher と Roger Christian に
よる作品で Gary Usher がプロデュースしたもの。
しかしこの2曲は劇中のみの演奏で当時は
レコード化されていなかった。ところが "Record Run"
の方は "Custom Caravan" に、"Bikini Beach" は
"Ventura" へと改作され "Custom Caravan" は
The Pyramids によってシングルカットされたのだ。
ここでは The Pyramids のマネージャー John Hodge
と Larry Wilson が連名でプロデューサーとして
クレジットされている。当時イギリスの出版社に
「ビートルズに対するアメリカの返答」と皮肉られた
The Pyramids は黒人のギターリストを含む5人組で、
話題作りのためにメンバーの頭をスキンヘッドにしたり、
野外ライブ会場に象に乗って現れたりした。
マネージャーとして彼らが信用していた John Hodge
は彼らの稼いだ金をかき集め、それは彼らの
知らないところで悪い投資に使われ、皮肉な事に
彼らはこの時期に$1の報酬も得なかったという。

The Kickstands - Death Valley Run

1964年5月には Gary Usher が The Kickstands
名義でアルバム Black Boots And Bikes
(Capitol T/ST-2078) をリリース。
The Super Stocks とほぼ同じ布陣でレコーディング
され、アレンジャーなどのクレジットはないものの
Gary Usher は5曲を提供し、演奏にも加わっている。
リードヴォーカルも Chuck Girard と一緒に担当した。
このアルバムでは2輪バイクをテーマにしており、
これは後に成功を収める The Hondells への伏線と
なった重要なアルバムだ。事実このアルバムでは後に
The Hondells のアルバムでも収録する "Death Valley Run"
をはじめとする4曲のオリジナルヴァージョンが収録されている。
このアルバムはボーナス写真を付属させてリリースされた。
この “Death Valley Run” は今や世界最高温度を記録した
カリフォルニア州中部、モハーヴェ砂漠の北に位置する
深く乾燥した盆地デスヴァレー国立公園でのバイクレース
を歌っている。Chuck Girard のかっこいいリードヴォーカル
と、緊迫感のある Hal Blaine のバスドラムのリズムが
素晴らしい傑作チューンだ。

The Valrays - Get A Board
(7: Parkway P-880) 1963
New York のヴォーカルインストルメンタルバンドで
Rod McBrien, Benny Palmeri,
Bob Musac, John Giametta の4人組。
このグループが母体となり Rod McBrien は
スタジオエンジニアーを続けながら良質な
ポップミュージックを書き続けそれが最終的に
Bubblegum pop の金字塔作品をリリースする
Salt Water Taffy へと成長していった。
そんな Rod McBrien の初期作だが、時流に乗って
サーフィンやってみました程度ではない、躍動感溢れる
曲となってるところは流石だ。

Tomorrow's People - Sting Ray's Back In Town
(7: Columbia 4-43629) 1966
後に The Trout (MGM) のメンバーになる
ソングライターでプロデューサーの Tony Romeo
の One Off シングル。彼のソングライターとして
のヒット曲は1970年に全米１位となった
The Partridge Family "I Think I Love You"
や The Cowsills "Indian Lake" 他にも The Seekers,
The Everly Brothers, Richard Harrisらへ
多くの曲を提供している。
そんな Tony Romeo はこの Tomorrow's People
名義のシングルと同時にソロ名義でも Columbia 4-43839
でシングルをリリースした。両方とも Tony Romeo の
オリジナル曲に David Kapralik と Van McCoy が
プロデュースを担当してる。（Van McCoy はアレンジも）
David Kapralik は Columbia Records の子会社
Date Records の Executive producer だ。
Tomorrow's People が5月2日にリリースされて、
Tony Romeo のソロが10月3日にリリース
されている。以前私は New York のスタジオから
Tomorrow's People のアセテート盤を入手した
事があるが、恐らく彼らプロダクションのこの一連
のリリースはその後のテレビ番組
The Partridge Family を見据えてのプロジェクト
だったのではないか。何故なら Hot Rod Tune
というイディオムの中のカーレースやカスタムカー
自慢はこの曲にはなく、むしろ低年齢向けの
サンシャインポップに属するサウンドだからだ。
そんな中に Van McCoy のクレジットが見つけられ
その後の何かを予想させるだけのキャッチーな
サンシャインポップに彼らが仕上げてるとこは、
さすがプロフェッショナルだ。

The Ragamuffins - The Fun We Had
(7: Tollie Records 9027) 1964
Jan & Dean の初期 Screen Gems での
録音でバックコーラスを務めていた The Matadors
の "Ace Of Hearts" を Gary Zekley が書いたのが
1962年だった。それは彼が Jan Berry に会った年
であり、それは初めてのコラボレイト作品だった。
それ以来 Surfin’ & Hot Rod Movement に急接近した
Gary Zekley は短期間でその才能を開花させている。
1963年11月にリリースされた Gary Zekley の
ソロシングル Other Towns, Other Girls /
When I Go To Sleep (Ava C-151) で Gary Zekley
と Dean Torrence は共同プロデュースをした。
Jan & Dean ?の1964年8月15日リリースのアルバム
"Ride The Wild Surf" の収録曲 "The Restless Surfer"
を Gary Zekley が提供しており、それは彼のソロ
“Other Towns, Other Girls” の歌詞を変えた曲で
当時 Gary Zekley と Jan & Dean は親密だった。
本件 Gary Zekley が The Ragamuffins 名義で
リリースした ”The Fun We Had” は当初
Dean Torrence に歌わせようと書いていた曲で、
間奏の導入部に Percy Faith の名曲 "A Summer Place"
(邦題:夏の日の恋) のフレーズを引用し
The Beach Boys- I get Around 風のコーラスを使う等
随所に斬新なアイディアが盛り込まれている。
結局 Dean Torrence はこの One Off ユニットの録音
には参加していないがB面で使われた "Don't Be Gone Long"
はこのセッションから Spin Off させた Gary Zekley の
もう一つのユニット Our Gang のB面に
"The Theme From Leon's Garage" と名を変えて
1965年7月にリリースさせる。そこでは Dean Torrence
が Vocal とプロデュースを担当しており
The Ragamuffins "Don't Be Gone Long" のオケに
Vocal をオーヴァーダブした曲だった。

Bruce Johnston がセッションミュージシャンを
続けていた1963年半ばから後半に録音された
音源と言われており、バックには Hal Blaine ら
が参加している。The Rip Chords や Bruce & Terry
のキャリアを通じて機が熟したと判断したのだろうか
1965年になってリリースされた。
これも多くの Bruce Johnston の One Off ユニットの
一つで、両面とも彼が曲を書いて歌っている。
このシングルは初期 Bruce Johnston 作品特有の
イノセントなティーンによる Summer vision が集約
されており、Beach Boys コレクターやティーンポップ
ファンからも高い支持を受ける。

出身のバンドで地元のローカルバンドで
ギタリストの Myron Carpino が在籍した
サーフインストバンド The Temptations を母体とする。
彼らは1963年に1枚シングルをリリースしている。
Egyptian Surf / Blue Surf (P & L Records 0001)
1964年から Motown の黒人グループ The Temptations
がメジャーになった為に彼らはグループ名を変えて
The Dick Johnson Sextet としてローカルクラブ
で活動を始めた。そんな中で彼らがマイナーメンバーチェンジ
後に結成したのが The Spats だった。

Celeste を演奏しており、Doug Rhodes は後に
The Music Machine, The Millennium に参加する事になる。
本件この曲のライタークレジットされてる
G. Maca-J. Renard (George Maca & Joe Renard) は
Jack Hoffman と Norman Malkin の変名である。
Jack Hoffman はレコードビジネスに長けており
彼は元々 MGM Studios のスタッフライターだった。
そして1958年には Winston Music Publishers を
設立しており、1960年代初頭には独自のインディーズ
レコード会社 Enith International Records、Jano Records,
Valley Records, Dome Records, Boom Records を設立した。
その際に Jack Hoffman は Lansdowne Music と
Bloor Music Publishers のオーナーだったカナダ人
Norman Malkin と出会い、彼らは有能なタレント探しを始め
The Spats を獲得している。そして新たに自身の
楽曲管理のために Hoffman House Music 設立し、
Surfin' song 系のソングライターでは
Alonzo B. Willis (King Of The Surf Guitar),
Nicholas Stokes, Raul Abeyta, そして Producer/Writer
の Steve Venet らと契約している。
それはさておき、The Spats はデビューシングルで
ダンスチューン “Gator Tails And Monkey Ribs”
(ABC Paramount 45-10585) をリリースしており
その Louie Louie 風のナンバーは1964年
9月26日をピークに全米96位のマイナーヒットと
なっている。彼らは Hullabaloo や Shindig! などの
テレビ出演をして人気を博した。そのムーヴメント
に合わせて彼らはアルバムをリリースしたが、
本件 “Go Go Yamaha” はアルバム収録はされて
いない。これは彼らにとって4枚目のシングルで
1965年8月にリリースされた。Yamaha Bike の
ジングル曲として売り込んだこの曲だが、Yamaha は
当時気乗りではなかった為にプロモーション撮影は
されたがヒットはしていない。残念ながら Yamaha が
興味を持ったのは Carol Conners - Yum Yum Yamaha
だったというから運が悪い。

ヴォーカルグループマナーの愛しいファルセットに、
アンサンブルの反響音が響き渡る Lo-Fi 録音
ならではの大迫力。ローカルクラブアクト然とした
クール＆タフなステージマナーの後に聴く者を
失神させる強烈な Guitar Breakが炸裂し、
Beach Boys Fan / Surfin’& Hot Rod Mania
じゃなくても秒殺される。The Customs (Gary Usher)
の R.P.M. Stereo Version をも凌駕する Guitar Break

The Timers - Competition Coupe

1963年11月に入り Reprise Records から
The Timers 名義でシングルがリリースされた。
No Go Showboat / Competition Coupe (Reprise 231)
このシングルは Gary Usher と Brian Wilson の
プロジェクトで、A面は The Beach Boys のカヴァーだが
ワイルドな仕上がりで Gary Usher のカラーが強く出た
仕上がりになっている。このレコーディングに The Castells
の Chuck Girard が参加しているが、これがきっかけに
彼は Gary Usher のセッションに多数参加していくことになる。
またこれが後に Brian Wilson から名曲 "I Do" を
プレゼントされる布石にもなったのである。
Chuck Girard によると "No Go Showboat" では
高い方のパートを Brian Wilson と Chuck Girard が
ファルセットで歌い、低い方のパートを Gary Usher と
Chuck Girard が歌ったという。B面の "Competition Coupe "
は素晴らしい疾走感を持ったドライヴィングホットロッドチューン
の大傑作。私はこの曲に出会ってから Gary Usher に
絶対服従を誓った。一般的に Hot Rod Movement が
表面化するのが1964～1965年だが既に本作品は1963年
に製作されている。Garage だ Punk だと言われるサウンドが
Hot Rod というテーマミュージックの中でひとつの完成された
形として残されたのがこの傑作だ。実はこの曲のメロディーや
アレンジは Frankie Avalon の “Beach Party” （1963年）でも
引用されてる他 The Astronauts のカヴァーヴァージョンも
1964年にリリースされた。しかしこのオリジナルを超える
感動はそれら比較材料をもってしてもなかった。
すなわちこの曲こそが Gary Usher が Gary Usher たる
所以だと実感したのだ。Stave Douglas のサックスにも
拍手喝采だ。ただただ凄いの一言。

Surfin’ & Hot Rod Tune の多くが曲の構成は同じである。
①1番、
②2番（1番の繰り返し）、
③間奏部分、
④1番の繰り返しでエンディング Fade out
The Beach Boys の “409””Shut Down”
”Farmer’s Daughter” etc
全てがこの構成を基本にする。
冒頭のイントロフレーズが演奏であるか、ファルセット
ハーモニーであるか等の違いがあれど、重要視される
のは導入部のフレーズで ① １番の構成そのものを
フックとし、それを引用する。だからこそ最重要視される
のが ① の構成で、そこに印象的な楽器や
ハーモニーのフレーズが全体の中で効果的にリフレイン
される。それは The Tigers の名作 “GeeTo Tiger”
も全く一緒。それで Surfin' テーマより、
Hot Rod / Car テーマの方がエフェクト効果音を導入
するケースが多い。我々が良く口にする
Surfin’ & Hot Rod 系のギターブレイクは
「チャンチャンチャンチャン チャチャチャチャチャチャチャチャ」と
4&8の節分をギターで奏でる部分だ。
このギターフレーズの多様が、曲間をスムーズに変更させ
① の構成を ④ まで繋げていく。① のエンディングから
② へと導入されるピアノに注目。
しかしよくのこのピアノのフレーズを考えたなあ。

Hot Rod High の “High” とは High School / 高校の事。
敢えて邦題を日本風にするなら「ホットロッド学園」と
言ったとこか。他愛もないガキのカーテーマソングだが、
そこにこそ閉じ込められた永遠の輝きは、振り返ると
自分がそうであったように Youth Culture にどっぷりと
漬かった車乗りであった事を教えてくれる。
毎日が新しくて、毎日が楽しかったあの頃、
みんな車に乗ってたよなあ。
The Hondells でも使った Gary Usher / Roger Christian
の共作ナンバーだがこのレコーディングには Gary Usher
は関わっていない。リードヴォーカルを Chuck Girard が
務めたこの傑作シングルのセッションは Steve Douglas
が中心となってレコーディングがされ、Hal Blaine らスタジオ
ミュージシャンが参加した。The Hondells ヴァージョンよりも
若干テンポを落とし軽いエコーをかけている。同じ10月に
The Knights のアルバム Hot Rod High (Capitol T/DT-2189)
をリリース。これにはシングルカットされた “Hot Rod High”
も収録されたがシングルとアルバムではミックスが異なる。
アルバムヴァージョンの間奏は冒頭ギターのみで続いて
サックスブローが絡んでくるが、シングルヴァージョンは
最初からギターとサックスが入ってくる。またシングルでは
ブリッジの部分が短く編集されているためにドライヴ感が
凄まじい。プロデュースは Capitol Records の
名プロデューサー Jim Economides

1964年10月、The Super Stocks の3rd アルバム
School Is A Drag (「学校は退屈だ」の意味)
がリリースされた。このアルバムも Featuring Gary Usher と
クレジットされておりジャケットの中央には Draggin' High '64
と書かれ2つのホットロッドレースカーの写真がタグ状に
プリントされている。
またこのアルバムは The Knights のアルバムと連番だが
The Knights が擬似ステレオの DT ナンバーだったのに
対して The Super Stocks はステレオの ST ナンバーと
なっている。Chuck Girard の素晴らしいティーンヴォーカル
のこのタイトルソングで幕を開けるこのサードアルバムでは
インスト曲を2曲だけに留め、ヴォーカル曲中心に収録された。
またサウンド的には今までの The Super Stocks 名義の
曲よりも、この頃好調なセールスを記録していた The Hondells
に近い。実は The Hondells の 1st アルバムと
The Super Stocks の 3rd アルバムは3日違いで
録音されている。レコーディングメンバーも似通っているので
必然的にサウンドが似ている。ここで使われる “Drag” とは
スラングで「ズルズルと引きずる＝辛く退屈」
早い話が「学校は退屈」だと、みんなに同意を求めている。
“We all agree that school is a drag” (学校は退屈だと
我々は同意してる）このコール＆レスポンスがロックンロール
の中のテーマミュージックの在り方を示している。
Steve Douglas のサックスプレイも素晴らしく、
印象的なドラムスティックのカウントが冒頭から
エンディングまでリズムをキープさせる傑作ナンバーだ。

The Catalinas はスタジオグループで
Bruce Johnston, Terry Melcher, Steve Douglas,
Hal Blaine, Billy Strange, Leon Russell, Ray Pohlman,
Jerry Cole らが録音に参加している。
彼らは The Catalinas 名義のアルバム "Fun Fun Fun"
(Recording Industries Corp. M1006) を1964年9月に
リリースしており、プロデュースは Bobby Darin の
T.M. Productions が担当しているが録音は3月26日と
5月20日のたったの2日に分けて行われた。
それ故にムーヴメントに便乗すべく低予算で作られ
慌ててリリースされたのが垣間見える。
そのアルバムからシングルカットされたのが
本件シングルだが、実は The Five-Hundreds と言う
セッションユニットが1964年7月18日に
Run Little Rabbit / Wheel's Last Ride (Mercury 72291)
をリリースしており、そちらは強烈なコンプレッサーをかけた
荒々しいサウンドだ。恐らくそれを知って The Catalinas version
は1964年10月に慌ててアルバムからシングルカットをしたのだろう。
で、その際 The Catalinas という名のグループが乱立して
いたので、それを回避する意味だったのだろうか

もっともらしくふざけた名義でリリースされている。
Chuck Berry の影響下であるギターイントロで
始まる軽快なロックンロールだ。
Rabbit とはスクーター型バイク全般を指すスラングで
この Honda カブ vs 輸出用 Rabbit の熾烈なバトルを描いた
ロックンロールは Surfin' & Hot Rod ファンから

New York City の Bell Studio で録音し、Joe Rock が
プロデュースも担当した。彼らのヴァージョンは
ニューヨーク州バッファローではローカルヒットを作ったが
全国ヒットに至らずグループは解散した。
因みに “Top Down Time” とは Roof Top (車の屋根)
を下ろす時間、即ちコンバーチブルの屋根を下ろして
オープンカー状態にして走る、天気の良い時間帯を
意味しており、”It’s Top Down Time again, I hope it
So long never end” 「コンバーチブルの屋根を下ろす
時間がまた来た。僕はそれがずっと続くことを願ってる」
と歌った爽快なカーソングである。

1966年8月19日にリリースされたシングル
“Here There And Everywhere” のB面に収録
された本件は Roger Glover が書いたホットロッド風味
のパロディーソングで、Morris Ten とはイギリスの
Morris 社の1932年式4ドア中型車で、
10馬力しかない古くて丸っこいブーブーだ。
戦前の英国のベストセラーだった大衆車である、
そんな古びたブーブーが速く走れる訳がな～～い（笑）
これこそがアメリカの Hot Rod Movement に対する
英国の返答だった。「馬力ないけど楽しいよ」的な。。
しかし、サウンドは軽快なスピード感が溢れており
Beach Boys 風にコーラスを入れる等して
Surfin’ & Hot Rod コレクター達から喜ばれている。
絶好調の Morris Ten, 最後に自転車に追い抜かれて
チャリンチャリンと注意されてドライブは終了。

Willie & The Wheels - Skateboard Craze

本件は P.F.Sloan と Steve Barri によるユニット
The Fantastic Baggys からの Spin Off で
これもまた、これっきりの One Off だ。
Dunhill Records は1964年に Dunhill Production
として設立され、当初の目的は Imperial Records
の Johnny Rivers を売り込む為だった。
当時 Imperial Records は創設者の Lew Chudd から
Liberty Records の設立者 Alvin Bennett に売却された
ばかりだった。Dunhill Production の設立者は
Lou Adler, Alvin Bennett, Pierre Cossette,
Bobby Roberts の4人である。
Alvin Bennett は Liberty Records の創設者でもあり
Chipmunks の Alvin は彼の名前から使われた。
Pierre Cossette はブロードウェイのプロデューサーを
していたフランス系カナダ人。そしてBobby Roberts は
後に The Mamas & The Papas のマネージャーとなる人物。
因みに Dunhill とは Bobby Roberts が以前メンバー
だったタップダンスグループ The Dunhills
(The Dancing Dunhill's) から命名されている。
1965年に入ると Lou Adler が独立レーベルとして
Dunhill Recordsを設立。プロダクションは1965年から
Dunhill Records となり創設者に Jay Lasker を迎え
ABC Records の配給で全米にリリースされていく。
Jay Lasker は Lou Adler 退陣後の Dunhill Records
の社長となる人物で後の ABC Dunhill Records も彼が
務め、その後 Motown Records の社長にもなる人物だ。
当初は Vee Jay Records にコンタクトをとっていた
Lou Adler だが Vee Jay の情勢が悪化している事を
知り ABC Records へ配給権契約を持ちかけている。
Dunhill Records の第1弾は The Fantastic Baggys
のスタジオ音源を利用した Rincon Surfside Band 名義
のプロモーション盤 EP だった。これは Dunhill Records
のアルバムリリース第1弾の予告となった。
この時点では同社のイメージカラーは決まっておらず、
このカラオケのセッション音源は Dunhill Records に
移籍させたセッションドラマー Hal Blaine がリリースした
レコードでも応用されている。
その後 The Fantastic Baggys の "Surfin' Craze" を
替え歌にして1965年6月に Willie & The Wheels
名義でシングルリリースしたのが本件だった。

The Super Stocks - Little Nifty Fifty
(LP: Capitol Records T-1997 mono / ST-1997 stereo) 1963
後に Gary Usher の代表的なプロジェクトとなる
The Super Stocks であるが、その初出は
Capitol Records のオムニバス・アルバム、
“Shut Down” (Capito T/DT-1918)
1963年6月発売であった。
このレコードは、Hot Rod Sound のブームにも
後押しされて、アルバム・チャートのトップ・テンに
入る好調な売れ行きを記録。“Shut Down” 収録の
The Super Stocks 名義の曲は4曲だったが、
Capitol も Gary Usher の力を認め、次なるアルバムには
6曲の制作を依頼する。こうして1963年10月に発売
されたのが “Hot Rod City” （Capitol T/ST-1997）で、
本件はそのアルバムに The Super Stocks 名義で収録
された1曲である。レコーディングには、Gary Usher、
Dennis McCarthy, Ritchie Burns といった Gary Usher
人脈のメンバー以外に、Steve Douglas (Sax）と
Richie Allen (Guitar） といった Wrecking Crew の
メンバーも参加している。
Garage サウンドを内包しつつも、プロフェッショナル
たちの手を借りた本作は、強烈なグルーヴ感を伴った
素晴らしい演奏となっている。リード・ヴォーカルは、
Gary Usher 自身。なおこの曲は、同じ1963年12月に
リリースされたアルバム “Hot Rod City”
（Vault VS/VS-104） にも別ヴァージョンが収録
されるが、そちらはさらに Garage 色の強い仕上がりだった。
アルバム “Hot Rod City” の出来に満足した Capitol は
翌1964年、ついに The Super Stocks 単独名義の
アルバムの制作を許可することになる。
“Nifty Fifty” とは、近年では機関投資家らに人気の
50銘柄を指す意味となっているが、ここで歌われて
いるのはもちろんそれではない。“Nifty” とは形容詞で、
粋な、かっこいい、気のきいたといった意味があり、
“Fifty” とはゼネラルモーター社の1950年型の
Chevrolet のことだ。つまりかっこいい1950年型
のシヴォレーのことを歌っている曲だ。
しかし、この曲は何べん聴いてもかっこええ！
この時代の Farfisa Organはどれも
Del Shannon “Runaway” みたいでピロピロでヨロシイ。
エンディングで “Turn on me, Turn on” (今度は俺の番だ）
ブオオオオオオッ！！！！！と爆音をたててスタートする。

アイダホ州出身のバンドで1958年から活動を
始め、キャリアが長い。このシングルがリリース
された当時のフォーメイションは

Phil "Fang" Volk (Bass Guitar)
Drake "Kid" Levin (Lead Guitar)
Mike "Smitty" Smith (Drums)
このシングルはプロモーション用シングルだった
のだが、そこまでの経緯を説明するとこうなる。
Lou Adessa はニューヨークの Vocal Quartet
Jordan And The Fascinations 出身で同グループの
ソングライターだった。
Vince Benay は Dodie Stevens - Hello Stranger の
作曲家としても知られる。
この二人 Lou Adessa-Vince Benay がソングライターコンビ
となった。彼らは 1965年に The First Team という
ユニット名義で Chevrolet Sings Of Safe Driving And You
(Columbia Special Products / Chevrolet CSM 838)
と言う Chevrolet の販売促進用アルバムをリリース
しており、それは Carly Simon をリードヴォーカルに
した所謂ソフトロックシンガーズのアルバムだった。
1967年にアルバムで使えなかった曲が Spin Off となり
まず "SS396" を "Corvair Baby" とカップリングにして
(Columbia Special Products CSP-262) を1965年にリリース
したのがこの曲の初版シングルとなる。そして翌年に
Paul Revere And The Raiders - SS 396 と
The Cyrkle - Camaro が カップリングされ
ピクチャースリーヴ付きでリリースされた。

The Del-Vetts - I Call My Baby STP

Illinois 州 Chicago のガレージバンドで
初期のフォーメイションからマイナーメンバー
チェンジをして以下の4人組になる。
Jim Lauer (Lead Vocal, Lead Guitar)
Bob Good (Rhythm Guitar)
Jack Burchall (Bass Guitar)
Roger Deatherage (Drums)
彼らは Chuck Berry の曲や Surfin' Inst の
スタンダードをカヴァーして Chicago の
クラブ界隈で人気を博していた。
間もなくしてレコードプロデューサーの Bill Traut
によって発掘された彼らはローカルレーベルの
Seeburg Records で The Righteous Brothers の
"Little Latin Lupe Lu" のカヴァーで1965年にデビューした。
その後 Bill Traut は Dunwich Records を設立、彼らの
実力を確信していた Bill Traut は The Del-Vetts と
契約をした。Dunwich のスタッフライターだった
Dennis Dahlquist が書いた "Last Time Around" で
再デビューを飾った。この曲は全米100位以内には
入らなかったが凄まじいファズガレージソングで
彼らの代名詞にもなった名曲。その後 60s Garage Psych
の名コンピアルバム Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from
the First Psychedelic Era, 1965?1968 に収録され
彼らは世界的に認知されるに至った。
その後に Follow up リリースされたのが本件シングルで、
カーオイル STP のプロモーション用に歌われた曲だった。
シングルには付属として STP のデカールステッカーが
入っており、前作に続き Dennis Dahlquist が書いた。
これは Hot Rod Movement から Folk Rock へと
ミュージックトレンドが移行する時期で、B面には
メンバーの Jim Lauer が書いた素晴らしい Folk Rock
を収録し1966年10月にリリースされている。
ここでもヒットに恵まれなかった彼らは1967年から
映画契約を踏まえて The Pride and Joy と名を変え、
Girl / If You're Ready (Dunwich D-152) をリリースし、
"Girl" はローカルヒットを記録したが映画は製作
されていない。そして財政難に陥った Dunwich Records
は再編成され Dunwich Production となった。
その際彼らは Dot Records の子会社 Acta Records へ
移籍し That's The Way It Is / We Got A Long Way To Go
(Acta Records 45-817) をリリース。A面は Jim Lauer の
オリジナルソング。B面は Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil の
書いた The Animals - We Gotta Get Out Of This Place
を原曲とする "We Got A Long Way To Go" だったが、
メンバーの Jack Burchall が脱退しており
そのシングルを最後にグループは解散した。
