The Knights - Hot Rod U.S.A.
(LP: Capitol Records T-2189 mono / ST-2189 stereo) 1964
“Surfin’” にU.S.A.があるならば、“Hot Rod” にも
U.S.A.があってもいいじゃないか！と思ったのか
どうかは定かではないが、Bobby Darin と Terry Melcher
が書いたのがこの曲。それにしても “○○○U.S.A.” という
タイトルの曲の多いこと。これはアメリカ人の愛国心の
現れなのだろうか (笑)
ところでこの曲は The Rip Chords のヒット・シングル、
“Three Window Coupe” のB面としてリリースされたのを
始めとして The Catalinas, The Fantastic Baggys,
The Barracudas そして本件 The Knights のヴァージョン
といった具合に、多くの作品が残る Hot Rod の名曲
である。The Knights のプロジェクトは古くは Gary Usher
のものと伝えられてきたが、Gary Usher が関わったのは
一部でしかなく、実際は Wrecking Crew のメンバー
でもある Steve Douglas が主導してレコーディング
されたものである。

本件ヴァージョンのリード・ヴォーカルは The Castells の
リード・ヴォーカリストで、The Hondells でもリードを
歌った Chuck Girard だ。このキーで歌えるのは流石だ。
そして改めてメンバーを見てみると、ヴォーカルの面子は
Gary Usher の人脈、そして演奏面では Steve Douglas
からの Wrecking Crew 人脈であることが判る。
全米各地を駆け抜ける Hot Rod Street Machine の
スピート感が良く表現された傑作である。
この The Knights のヴァージョンであるが、
The Rip Chords のヴァージョンにも引けをとらない
素晴らしいグルーヴを持っている。
メンバーがメンバーだけに、これも当然であろう。
なお The Knights のアルバムであるが、オリジナルは
モノ・ミックス盤と、疑似ステレオ盤でしかリリース
されていないため、ここでは敢えてモノ・ミックスを収録した。
なおアルバムは1964年10月リリースされている。

The Wheel Men - School Is A Gas
(7: Warner Brothers 5480) 1964
The Super Stocks - School Is A Drag
と同じ1964年10月、Gary Usher は The Wheel Men
名義で “School Is A Gas” をリリース。
A面は The Super Stocks の名曲 "School Is A Drag"
を改作したもので、全く違うアレンジを施し、
メロディーも変える等、様々な工夫が伺える。
"School Is A Drag" とは Drag (引きずる）「学校は退屈だ」
の意味、それに対して "School Is A Gas" とは
Gas (ガソリンで満たされる、スラングで「楽しくさせる」)
「学校は楽しい」の意味。そこにカーレースの専門用語の
A/Gas をひっかけたダブルミーニングにしてる。
A/Gas の “Gas” とは Gasser と呼ばれる Hot Rod の一種
でメイカー各社が本格参戦する Factory Hot Rod Car Race が
開催され始める以前のストックカーレースを指す。
これは1950年代後半に発生し1970年代初頭まで続いた。
レギュレーション（レースのためのルール規制）別に
A/Gas, B/Gas, C/Gas, D/Gas と続いていき A/Gas が
最も早く走るために改造されている。
イコール「学校は超イケてる」の意味にもなる。
ここで聴ける Chuck Girard のリードヴォーカルは、
あどけないティーンヴォーカルで人気が高い。

The Upsetters - Draggin' The Main

クレジットこそないが当時 Autumn Records に
所属していた若き Sly Stewart (Sly Stone) が
プロデュースを担当した。Ronny & The Daytonas 風の
独特な Wah Wah ハーモニーを配したスタイルで、
曲調は Bruce & Terry の初期作品のような感じ。
作者の Toby Grogan は1963年に Vee Jay Records
から優れた Teen pop rocker のシングル
Angel / Just A Friend をリリースしており、
そちらも人気が高い。

The In Crowd - Speed Queen

Texas 州 Houston 出身のソングライター
Jimmy Duncan (本名 James Ollie Duncan, Jr.)
のプロジェクトである。彼は Bobby Helms の
ヒット曲 “My Special Angel” の作者として知られ
他にも Fabian “String Along”, Steve Lawrence
“Everybody Knows” 他ヒット曲を書いている。
Jimmy Duncan は流行に敏感で地元 Houston に
The Living Eye と言うロッククラブを経営しており
そこは The Electric Prunes, ? and The Mysterians
等が来て定期的なライヴを行っていた。
で、その流行に敏感な彼はどうしても
Surfin’ & Hot Rod がしたいので先ずは1965年に
Musicor からサーフィンソングをリリースした。
そこで好感触を得た彼が満を持してリリースした
ホットロッドチューンがこれだ。レースカーのエキゾースト
で幕を開ける傑作で、効果的にそのエフェクトを使い
ギターブレイクを挿入する。よっぽど好きなのだろうか
彼は1970年には Soundville というスタジオを
Houston に設立し、同名のレーベルオーナーとなる。

Michigan 州出身のヴォーカルグループで
Lloyd Hugo (Bass and Lead vocal)
Greg Kobe (Vocals)
Don Hermanson (Guitar)
Johnny Mitchel (Guitar)
Jay Mihelich (Drums)
の5人で構成されており、Limelight でシングルを
1枚リリースした The Pastels の変名で互いの
シングルB面に収録した “Mary” を同じヴァージョン
で使用している。彼らはそれ以前に The Vigilantes (Cuca)
や The Playboys (Heartbeat), The Lovers (Sunny),
The All-Niters (Erie) 名義でもシングルをリリースしていて
The Flagmen とはチェッカーフラッグを振る人の意味で
彼らもまた時流に乗ったムーヴメント参加組だった。

The Hubcaps - Hot Rod City
(7: Laurie Records LR-3219 Promo) 1963
Hubcap とは Wheel Cap の事で
レーシングタイヤを締めてる重要な部品だ。
New York 州 Bronx 出身の Ernie Maresca は
“Barbara Ann” のヒットでも有名な The Regents
のメンバーだった。その後彼は Dion のヒット曲
"Runaround Sue" や "The Wanderer".を書いて
ソングライターとしての地位を確固たるものとしていた。
自作自演の "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)"
が1962年初頭に全米6位の大ヒットとなり彼は
Singer Songwriter としての道を探り始めた。
同年7月には "Down on the Beach" が全米19位
のスマッシュヒットとなり彼は Youth Theme に
敏感となった。The Beach Boys の出現により
Surfin’ & Hot Rod Movement が訪れると
Ernie Maresca は本件 “Hot Rod City” を書き
このシングルは1963年11月に慌ててリリースされた。
作詞を担当したのは "Shout! Shout!” の共作者の
Thomas Bogdany だ。
録音には Rusty Lane (本名 Karl Zeeb, Jr. ) が
参加しており、彼は元々 Teen Pop Singer として
高校生の時に Laurie Records から1958年に
デビューし、その後は Dick Clark Show に出演する等
人気を博した。彼はセカンドシングルでは
The Mystics (Hushabye) をバックに従える程に
成長していた。しかし1959年10月、Rusty Lane は
車と結婚式資金のために29軒もの家から強盗をした
罪で逮捕され、彼のキャリアーを停止させてしまった。
保釈後に名前を使えなくなった Rusty Lane は手始めに
本件 The Hubcaps - Hot Rod City の録音に参加し、
その後間もなくして The Ray-Vons という一人多重録音
のグループ名義で Laurie Records から1964年4月に
再デビューをした。The Ray-Vons - Judy / Regina
(Laurie Records LR 3248) これは両面自作で
プロデュースを Ernie Maresca, バックは
The Mystics だった。と言う事は本件 The Hubcaps
のバックも The Mystics である可能性はかなり高い。
Ernie Maresca は流行作家として積極的に Youth Culture
に参加する。彼は明らかに Surfin’ & Hot Rod の流行を
ビジネスチャンスと考えており、1964年11月にリリースされた
The Mustangs - Rumps (Providence PROV-407)
も書いている。

Curtis Lee - Calif. GL-903
(7: Dunes Records DUNES 801) 1964
Arizona 州出身のティーンポップシンガー、
"Pretty Little Angel Eyes" のヒットが最も有名だ。
当時彼が所属していた Dunes Records は
"Corinna, Corinna" のヒットでも有名な Ray Peterson ?
と彼のマネージャーだった Stan Shulman が1960年に
設立したレーベルで、レコードプロデューサーとして
若き Phil Spector も参加していた。
Curtis Lee は後にソングライターコンビ Boyce & Hart
で有名になる若きソングライター Tommy Boyce と
この頃に出会い友人になった。当時 Tommy Boyce は
The Belairs の Richard Delvy が作家＆投資家の
John Marascalco と共同出資していた Princess Records
で曲を書いており、そこには若き Harry Nilsson も
Bobby Hart らとソングライター、セッションシンガー
として出入りしていた。
John Marascalco は Little Richard 他多くのヒット曲の
ソングライターで、幾つかのレーベル運営もしていたので、
Los Angeles 周辺のレコードビジネスの顔役と
言ってもいいだろう。そんな環境だから「誰かが書いた曲が
誰かによって手渡され、それを誰かが歌う」といった
流動的なサイクルの中にいなければラッキーチャンス
には巡り合えない事は若いシンガーも若いソングライター
も熟知していただろう。ましてや1963年11月22日に
ジョンＦケネディー大統領暗殺がテレビで中継され
風雲急を告げる当時のアメリカだ。
Richard Delvy が投資した Vault Records が
1963年12月にリリースしたコンピレーションアルバム
Hot Rod City (Vault V/VS-104) に若き Bobby Hart は
収録された The Quads, The Grand Prix の歌で
リードヴォーカルを務めている。そんな状況だったのだから
本件 “Calif. GL-903” もその流れで書かれていた曲
なのだろう。ここでは Curtis Lee が意識的にかパワフル
なヴォーカルでドライヴ感を強調している。
本件 Curtis Lee - Calif. GL-903 は1964年8月に
リリースされたが、イギリスの The LeRoys も1964年
11月27日に "California GL 903" (UK H.M.V. POP 1368)
をリリース。そちらではなぜかクレジットが Boyce-Hart
(Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart) となっているが、恐らく
これは Bobby Hart の補作部分があったのだろうと
推測される。

The Lidos - Drivin' Little Dragster
(7: Prince Records PR-6407-X) 1964
1962年に The Lidos はノヴェルティー調の
パーティーソング Bashanova/ Marina を
Prince Records PR-6211 でリリースしており
それを Mercury が買い上げて同年に再リリース
している。A面曲は Al DeLory, Joseph Van Winkle
が書いた曲で1963年にはアイルランド出身の
The Bachelors もカヴァーしてる。
B面曲 “Marina” はベルギーの Rocco Granata
が1959年にヒットさせたマリアッチポップの
カヴァーで、The Lidos のヴァージョンは印象的な
ピアノプレイが Gary Zekely のようにも聴こえる。
Gary Zekely はすでに1963年に Jan & Dean
のバックコーラスを担当していた The Matadors
のデビューシングルで “Ace Of Hearts” (Colpix CP-698)
を提供しているのだが、レコードミュージシャンと
してのデビューはどこなのだろうかと私は研究してきた。
Gary Zekely - Other Towns, Other Girls
が1964年11月のリリースなので、ここで紹介する本件
The Lidos - Drivin' Little Dragster が Gary Zekley
の Surfin’ & Hot Rod レコードとしてはデビュー曲となる。
自身が書いたオリジナル曲に自らがプロデュースを
担当しているのを確認すると、Gary Zekley も
御多分に漏れず Surfin’ & Hot Rod Movement
に早く参加したくてウズウズしていたのが解る。

Dean Kay と Stan Ross によるユニット。
Tennessee Ernie Ford TV Show の常連だった
Dean Kay はレコーディングアーティストおよび
ソングライターとしてデビューし、ソングライター
としては Frank Sinatra “That’s Life” が有名。
Stan Ross は Annette - No Way To Go But Up,
Bugaloos - Gna Gna Gna Gna Gna 等多くの
曲を書いており、二人のソングライターが時流に
乗って Hot Rod / Biker Song を歌ったのだが、これが
ワイルドな Fuzz Guitar を間奏部で配しており
人気が高い。

The Super Stocks - D/Das Chevy
(LP：Capitol T-2060 mono / ST-2060 stereo) 1964
1964年4月、満を持してリリースされた The Super Stocks
の単独ファースト・アルバム ”Thunder Road” に収録された
1曲である。作曲と作詞は Gary Usher-Roger Christian で
このレコーディングもまた、西海岸の有能なミュージシャン
たちによってレコーディングされた大掛かりな
プロジェクトの一つであった。

D/Gasの “Gas” とは Gasser と呼ばれる Hot Rod の一種
でメイカー各社が本格参戦する Factory Hot Rod Car Race が
開催され始める以前のストックカーレースを指す。
これは1950年代後半に発生し1970年代初頭まで続いた。
レギュレーション（レースのためのルール規制）別に
A/Gas, B/Gas, C/Gas, D/Gas と続いていき A/Gas が
最も早く走るために改造されている。この順に従って
D/Gasは最も市販車に近い改造車レースで、イコール
D/Gas のレギュレーションなら公道で走れるので
公道のゼロヨンレース等のチャンピオンクラスになる。
ここで歌われる “D/Gas Chevy” がそれに該当し、
改造された Chevrolet のことだが、製造されてからけっこうな
年数が経っているにも関わらず、彼女は（アメリカ人は
愛車を “She” や Her…と女性形で表現する）未だ
レーシング・チームの誇りと喜びであり「D/Gas Chevy は
もう一度（レースで）トロフィーを獲るのだ」と、
Gary Usher は高らかに歌っている。
コーラスで “Doo-Wah, Doo-Wah, Doo-Wah” と歌われる
ところは、Doo Wopコーラスでよく聴かれる
ナンセンス・シラブル (Doo Wop で使う「ドゥーワッ」
「シュビドゥビ」「ドゥビドゥワ」といった意味を持たない
言葉のこと) からの影響もうかがえるが、
非常に印象深く、曲に良いアクセントを加えている。
そして歌詞の一部 “Six years old, but don’t you knock her,
Cause at the drags she blows off the stocker”
このフレーズによく似た歌詞は、Jan & Deanの
“Hot Stocker” (Album “Drag City” に収録されている)
という曲の一冒頭の一節でも聴くことができる。
ちなみに “Hot Stocker” の作曲は Jan Berry だが、
作詞は “D/Gas Chevy” と同じく Roger Christian だけに
これも納得である。

フィラデルフィアの Vocal Quartet の
The Dovells がついに Hot Rod Music に参戦！
しかもB面扱いである（苦笑）
“On The Prowl”とは、（獲物を求めて）うろつく、という意味。
直訳すれば「獲物を求めてうろつくドラッグスター」だ。
そしてこの曲は、Cameo/Parkway 系の廉価盤レーベルである
Wyncote よりリリースされた別グループ名義のアルバムに
収録されて使いまわされているのが、より一層怪しさを増す。
しかも二度も！

ここで Buzz Cason 関係を三連発。
1964年3月には The Captivations というグループ
のシングルに Gary Usher はノンクレジットながら
参加してる。A面は元々 "Red Hot Honda" という
タイトルだったらしい。しかし、いわゆるホットロッド
イメージにブランドを関連付けることを望まなかった
ホンダバイク側による反対によって "Red Hot Scrambler Go!"
にタイトルは変更された。という事はこの時点で Honda と
The Beach Boys サイドはプロモーションソングの
タイアップ契約が進んでいたのだろう。
American International Pictures の映画を
接点に知り合った Gary Usher と Kim Fowley だが、
その際 Kim Fowley は Gary Paxton に
Gary Usher を紹介した。彼は "It Was I" のヒット
でも有名な Skip & Flip というデュオを後に
The Byrd に参加する Skip Battin とでっちあげたり、
Hollywood Argyles や Boris Pickett 等の
ノヴェルティー色の濃いダンスナンバーを
ロックンロールシーンに送り込みヒットさせた人物と
しても知られる。この Garpax というレーベルは
London Records 配下による Gary Paxton の
レーベルで、この The Captivations のシングル
製作も彼によるものだ。そしてこの曲の録音参加
メンバーが凄い

参加メンバーが凄いというのも Gary Usher,
Bruce Johnston, Buzz Cason というビッグネーム
の参加と同時にその後1966年に Capitol Records
からサイケ、エクスペリメンタルアルバム
The Happening をリリースする Fire And Ice, Ltd.
の Roy Durkee がバスヴォーカルで歌ってるのだ。
ホットロッドも数年後にはサイケデリックシーンへと
変化してしまうところが西海岸サブカルチャーの
成長の早さだろうか。
因みにこの The Captivations は
Red Hot Scramblers-Go (Pentacle 1635) でもテンポを落とした
スローヴァージョンで同年にシングルをリリースさせたが、
そちらは Gary Usher は参加していない。
Pentacle 1635 では Scrambler から Scramblers へ
とタイトル表記を変えていて末尾の感嘆符 (びっくりマーク) !
もなくなっている。
作者のクレジットも Buddy Biglow だけになっている。
実はこちらが先にリリースされ、The Captivations のシングル
(Garpax 44179) のリリースに合せて回収されたと作者の
Buddy Biglow は語ってる。と言う事は Pentacle 1635
は所謂プリプロ (効率の良いレコーディングをするための事前準備、
仮録音) の類であった事が解る。
なので Pentacle 1635 がオリジナルスピードで、同じオケを使った
Garpax 44179 はテープスピードを速めて13秒高速化されている。
補足だが1968年にイギリスの The Quiet Five が
The Fabulous Quite Five 名義で The Captivations の
カヴァーシングルをアメリカのみでリリースしてる。
Red Hot Scramblers-Go (Casa Grande CG-8462-45)
このシングルはイニシャル番号が (CG-1965/1964) と
なっており恐らく A面は1965年に録音（B面は1964年か？）
されたものと推測される。A面は The Captivations の
カヴァーだが、これには Gary Usher は参加していない。
このシングルには Recorded In London, England と
クレジットされており、彼らはイギリスでは The Quiet Five と
名乗っていたバンドで、後に Mark Wirtz のセッションシンガー
やコラボレイターとしても名を馳せるオランダ出身のシンガー
Kris Ife のデビューバンドでもある。

元々は Brenda Lee のバックバンドとして1957年から
活動していたので彼女のレコーディングにも
参加している。彼らは1959年に Felsted から
Casualteens 名義でもシングルを1枚リリースした。
このシングルでプロデューサークレジットされている
Ronnie Shacklett とは Brenda Lee の夫である。
The Country Gentlemen の Gerald Nelson と
ソングライターコンビを組んでいた Chuck Taylor
の作品だが、これが Buzz Cason の爆裂ガレージ
パンクとなっており鼻血ブーッ！（死語）
因みに忘れちゃいけない Buzz Cason の隠れた勲章を、
マニアなら御存知、坂本九「上を向いて歩こう」の
英語詞 “Sukiyaki” を作詞したのは Buzz Cason です。
日本盤解説の高崎一郎さんも興奮して「女の子がまた
キャーキャー」と説明。またもや鼻血ブーッ！（死語）

1965年4月にリリースされたこの曲は
Gary Usher にとってホットロッドミュージック
の有終の美を飾る傑作シングルだ。
Gary Usher と Buzz Cason の共作で
Chuck Girard のリードヴォーカルも素晴らしく
Ronny & The Daytonas 風の独特な
Wah Wah ハーモニーが導入される。
因みに Buzz Cason はヴォーカルグループ
The Statues 出身でその後 Nashvelle の
Bucky Wilkin と共に行動し Ronny & The Daytonas
をヒットさせたソングライターでもある。
Buddy Holly 亡き後も活動していた The Crickets
は同郷の Snuff Garrett を頼ってロスに移る。
同じ時期、活動の場をロスに移していた Buzz Cason
は解散前の The Crickets のメンバーとしても
活躍している等、彼は複数のグループ
を掛け持ちで行動していた。

同じ流れで企業タイアップ物を連発で。
Mike Curb 子飼いの Dave Allan が
ギターを担当しており、サウンドを聴けば解るように
この曲も The Hondells のセッションからの Spin Off である。
しかし凄い発想だ、The Hondells sound で Suzuki を
リリースするのだからビジネスマンとしての Mike Curb
の強かなタイアップ戦略が見え隠れする。
Nick Venet の Ben-Ven Productions がプロデュース
を担当している。因みに 1965年の The Buddies の
アルバム Go Go With The Buddies (Wing SRW-16306)
に収録されている "Wanda On Her Honda" は
本件 The Sudells - Suzuki に他の歌詞で歌った
ヴォーカルをオーヴァーダビングしたもの。
Lead Vocals は本件同様に Jerry Naylor だ。
Buddy Holly 亡き後に The Crickets のリードシンガー
になっていた Jerry Naylor は、この Mike Curb の
Mercury Wing での一連のアルバムで全て
リードヴォーカルを担当した。

カナダのオンタリオ州とセントローレンス川を
隔てた国境の町 New York 州の Massena マシーナ
にある小さなレーベル D&C Records のオーナー
Tommy Dishaw がリードヴォーカルを務める
ガレージバンド。Tommy と Jimmy Dishaw
の兄弟を中心に結成されていた。
彼らは Tommy Dishaw & The Panthers
名義でカナダで1964年に1枚シングルをリリースしており
Ain't Gonna Bother You (No More) / Such A Temper
(Canada London Records M. 17333) 位置的にも
カナダでの活動が多かったようだ。
元々 Tommy Dishaw は1959年にはティーンポップ
シンガーとしてデビューしており、曲も書けて
才能があったために自身のレーベル D&C Records
を設立してからは Youth Culture を意識して
時流に合わせて様々なスタイルの曲を書いている。
ブリヂストン自転車があるように、当時ブリヂストンは
バイクも作っていて日本では埼玉の上尾で Bridgeston 90
を製造していた。排気量 88CC のスポーツバイクで
当時アルミシリンダーにメッキをかけたバイクは
画期的だった。1964年にアメリカでも Bridgeston 90
が発売されブリヂストンはこのシリーズを主力として
本格的にアメリカのバイク市場へ参入した。
9つの異なるモデルで提供された90シリーズは、
ブリヂストンが米国市場に提供した他のシリーズの
中で最も多くのモデルを持っていた。
因みにこのシングルはピクチャースリーヴを付けて
リリースされている。

車の販売促進用プロモーションソングを三連発で。
California 州 Burbank 出身の5人組。
Barry Hockenberger (Lead Vocal, Organ)

Jerry Cervenka (Drums)
彼らは高校時代からバンドを組んでおり
ドラマーの Jerry Cervenka の両親がどういうわけか
NBCのテレビショー “Let’s Make A Deal” の
アシスタントプロデューサーの Paul Pieratt と友人だった。
Paul Pieratt は彼らグループのマネージャーとなり
グループを導く事になる。Paul Pieratt の妻 Cynthia が
ピアノの先生だったので先ずリードシンガーの
Barry Hockenberger にオルガンを教え、グループの
方向性を決めていった。
Pontiac が GeeTO Tigerプロモーションのために
音楽グループを必要としたとき Paul Pieratt に
連絡があった。1965年式 Pontiac GTO の
マーケッティングキャンペーンの為に彼らは
Colpix Records と契約を結び、The Tigers と
名づけられた。Mike Rubini, Dale Hallcom, そして
Don Berrigan の連名で既に書かれていたこの曲を
Hollywood の United Recorders で録音するのだが
リードヴォーカルの Barry Hockenberger 以外の
グループメンバーは録音参加していない。
録音は1964年12月に行われレコーディングには
作者でキーボードプレイヤーの Mike Rubini,
やはり作者で The Mar-Kets の "Sweet Potatoes"
を書いた Bass ギタリストの Dale Hallcom,
そして Glen Campbell ギター等、プロのセッション
ミュージシャンとプロのセッションシンガーズ
によって録音されている。
“GeeTO Tiger” の人気が高まるにつれ車の工業地帯
Detroit で8位、Chicago で10位という地域的ヒットとなり
Pontiac はバンドに全米ツアーでこの曲をさらに宣伝
するように依頼した。その契約には、バンドが California
から Detroit まで Pontiac GTO に乗って行き、
各主要都市のポンティアック販売店に立ち寄ってサイン会
をするという考えだった。残念ながら、バンドのメンバーの
何人かが大学に通っていたため、そしてベトナム戦争の
徴兵ドラフト延期を受けていたため、バンドはこの
プロモーションを出来なかった。その後彼らは
ハリウッドの Capitol Records で、Capitol の社長と
The Beach Boys のメンバー数名が出席したオーディション
に参加したり、1965年の Hot Rod Magazine の
Press Partyで演奏したりした。グループは、いくつかの
オリジナル曲を書き、他のいくつかの自動車関連の曲の
デモを録音した。Barry Hockenberger は The Tigers
以外のいくつかの曲のリードボーカルを行ったが、
残念ながらチャートには届かなかった。
当時テレビプロデューサーの Bob Rafelson と
Bert Schneider は既存のバンドをキャストして
“The Monkees” というテレビ番組を開発しようと
しており、彼らのマネージャーの Paul Pieratt は
The Tigers にその役割をさせようとしたが、結果的には
話題づくりの公開オーディションの広告が出され、
メンバーの Barry Hockenberger と Neal Moser に
徴兵資格があり、バンドの他のメンバーは大学に
通っていたため、彼らはこの機会を追求することが
できなかった。結局二人が徴兵された時に
The Tigers は解散した。

New Jersey 州の6人組ガレージバンド。
彼らは当時 Bruce Springsteen が在籍した
最初のバンド The Castiles と競い合っていた仲で
この曲はバンドのギタリスト Phil Watson が
書いたオリジナルで地元のローカルフォードディーラー
のプロモーションとして使われた。

異空間へと誘う。この弱々しいカーソングはとても
単調かつ印象的で、アマチュアっぽくて私は好きだ。
因みにグループ写真を用いた Picture Sleeve
がプロモーション用に配布されており
そちらはかなりレアーである。

フォードディーラーの企業販促物をもう一丁。
Heintzleman’s Ford Inc. 30th Anniversary Promotion
アメリカのフォードディーラーで素晴らしい業績をあげる
巨大チェーン店 Heintzleman’s Ford の30周年記念シングル。
しのぎを削って激戦が繰り広げられるフォード販売網の中でも、
力のあるディーラーはここぞという場面で他ディーラーとの
底力の差を見せ付ける。それが企業販売促進物の
クオリィティーに表れるのは今も昔も変わらない。
そんな数あるカーディーラータイアップ物 Hot Rod Tune
の中でも優れた作品がこれなのだ。
アメリカの企業販売促進物コレクターとフォード限定コレクター、
そして Surfin’ & Hot Rod コレクターが血眼になって
探してるのがこの一枚だ。Rick Henn 風の、はにかんだ
Surf vocal に Tormentors (Royal) 風のラララハーモニー
が決まった大傑作。Hot Rod コレクターは企業物コレクター
なんぞに負けるなよ。なんせこっちには Big Block
が付いてるんだからな。Hot Rod コレクションは
馬力とトルクで勝負よ！Shut ‘em down !!

The Grads は後に The Sandpipers と名を変えて
A&Mからヴォーカルイージーリスニングのヒット曲をリリースする
James Brady, Michael Piano, Richard Shoff の3人組。
この The Wild One は The Hondells のセッションを
引き継いだ Mike Curb のものだ。
この The Grads のヴァージョンは他の3つのヴァージョンよりも
ワイルドなアレンジでテンポも速く、他では
聴けなかった勇猛なフレンチホルンが挿入される。
この The Grads は一時期 The Hondells のセッションから
Gary Usher が離れていた時に、プロデュースを担当した
Mike Curb のプロダクションによって録音された。
Direction は Vocal and Instrumental 共に Nick Venet
が担当している。因みにB面の “The Cool One” は
アルバム The Buddies & The Compact
(Wing / Mercury Records SRW 16293) に収録された
The Buddies 名義の “The Cool One” や
Davie Allan Beyond The Surf (Marc Records 107)
と同じトラックである。

The Reveres - Big "T"

1964年1月にリリースされたこのシングルは
Bruce Johnston がセッションミュージシャンを
続けていた頃で、これも多くの Bruce Johnston
の One Off ユニットの一つと言われている。
バックは The Wrecking Crew が担当しており
噂では Al Capps が担当していた1964年の
歯磨きセットのキャンペーンソング
Shiny Brothers - Smilesville, U.S.A.
(Doc Records 101) と同じセッションではないかと
言われている。本件のレコーディングもハリウッドの
名門 Gold Star Studios で行われたので
その可能性は高い。これが T. M. Productions
のクレジットでもあれば「はいっ Bruce Johnston」
と断言できるのだが。因みに Bruce Johnston
本人に尋ねても「ごめん、覚えていない」との事。
Barry And The Tamerlanes のメンバーで
ソングライターの Bodie Chandler の書いた曲で
Valiant Records のリリースなので当然ながら
ヴォーカルパートは Barry And The Tamerlanes
のバックアップを受けているだろう。

The Super Stocks - Hot Rod City
(LP: Capitol Records T-1997 mono / ST-1997 stereo) 1963
"Shut Down" に続く Capitol Records からのオムニバス・
アルバム "Hot Rod City" からの収録。リードを歌うのは
Gary Usherではなく、後に The Hondells のフロント・マン
となる Ritchie (Dick) Burns だ。Ritchie が後に言うには、
「初期の頃 Gary は自分だけが出るのではなく、ちゃんと
みんなに仕事を分け与えていた。その点、Gary は
非常にフェアだったよ。俺以外にも Dennis McCarthy
がリードを歌った曲もあるしね」とのことだ。
ところでここに収録したのはトゥルー・ステレオ・ヴァージョン
だが、冒頭の車の効果音は左から走り出し、
右へ移動して滑走し、そしてそのまま加速して
彼方へと走り去る。さらに曲の終わりでは右の彼方
から戻ってきて、最後は元の左に収まるという
芸の細かい編集となっている。
これをステレオの正面から聴くと、まるで自分の
周りをカスタム・カーが走り廻っているようにも思えて、
これが良いというファンも多いのだ。

Richie Allen こと Richie Podolor であったが、

Surf Music の Legend Guitarist だけあり、流石の
ギター・ソロを披露してくれる。なおこのアルバムは
当時東芝レコードを通じて我が国でもリリースされており、
さらにはアメリカでは発売されなかったシングル
"Hot Rod City" (B面は Shut Down Douglas の
"Twin Cut Out" がカップリング)までもが発売されている。

Tony Harris With The Woodies でリードヴォーカルを
担当した Tony Harris とは1958 年に公開された
SF ホラー映画「The Blob」のプロデューサーで有名な
Jack H. Harris の息子で、1965年に Hollywood の
Dee Gee Records と契約した。そして1969年に Chartmaker
レーベルで有名なサイケデリックアルバムをリリースする
Darius の1965年の Dee Gee Records でのデビューシングル
(Dee Gee 3001) で作曲、プロデュース、アレンジを担当した。
そして自らも (Dee Gee 3002) でソロデビューをし、
同レーベルでもう1枚シングルをリリースした後に、
Triumph Records で本件シングルをリリースした。
その後1968年から Tony Harris は VMC (Vance Music
Corporation) レーベルの専属プロデューサーとなった。
彼は同レーベルの Eastfield Meadows のメンバーとしても
活動し、彼の名を一躍有名にした Duke Baxter の
"Everybody Knows Matilda" ではプロデュースを手掛け、
この曲は1969年7月26日をピークに全米52位のスマッシュヒット
となった。彼は1970年初頭には Larry Norman (The Zombies の
"I Love You" のカヴァーヒットが有名な People の元メンバー)
や Randy Stonehil (Contemporary Christian Music の
パイオニアー) と共作を続けた。
The Woodies について。ホワイトヴォーカルグループ
The Dell-Coeds のメンバーの Richard George は
自作 "Love In Return" を1961年にリリースしており、
このグループは3人の女性ヴォーカルをフロントに立てた
グループで、The Pendletones 時代の The Beach Boys
と共にパーティーでパフォーマンスする仲だった。
当時 Hermosa Beach に住んでいた
Richard George は Dennis Wilson や Al Jardine と
親交があり、The Beach Boys の成功の影響を受けて
彼も Surf Music を書き始めた。1963年の夏に
Richard George が The Beach Boys のために書いた
"Surfboard for Christmas" を彼自身が録音した。
結局この歌は The Beach Boys によって録音
されなかったが、そこで Richard George の仲のよい
友人達 Ray Duron, John Mead, Jim Crouch が集められ
The Woodys を名乗ったのが始まりだった。
Ray Duron と John Mead は高校のクラスメイトで
The Waves というサーフィン映画のショーに出演した際に
Richard George と出会ったのがきっかけでグループを
結成した。彼らはまず1963年に The Woodys 名義で
Red River Valley / The Saints (Go Surfin' In)
(California Records 304) サーフインストシングルを
リリースしている。その後も Richard George は自身が
書いた曲を熱心にプロモーションし出版社、レコード会社、
ラジオ局にクリスマスの挨拶として送ったところ、
反応したのが Surf Vocal Group を物色していた
Richard Delvy だったのだ。Richard Delvy は当時
Surf Vocal Group のプロデュースと管理に興味を
持っており、それらは Vault Recordsでの一連の
リリースもその一環だった。そこで Sam Riddle は
テーマソングを作ってほしいと Richard Delvy に
依頼したところ、それを許諾した。
Sam Riddle は KHJ の人気DJで、以前 Richard Delvy
が番組CMを録音した事から Hollywood A Go-Go
や Ninth Street West の人気テレビショーの
プロデュースを Richard Delvy に依頼した事がある。
Richard Delvy は自身もサブメンバーとして参加しながら
自身の The Challengers の Vocal Tracks を
担当させていたこの The Woods (The Woodiesとも言う)
で多くのヴォーカルセッションを当時録音していた。
これは Tony Harris With The Woodies -
Go Go Little Scrambler (Triumph TR-60) も含まれる。
The Woodies には若き日の Jim Crouch も参加
していたが彼はソロデビューする前にグループから
離れている。The Woodies に Sam Riddle を
参加させて歌わせたのが Aloha A Go-Go の
テーマ曲の "Hawaii" だった。所詮セッションによって
メンバーは変わるので録音によっては Hal Blaine が
ドラムを担当する事もあり録音は主に Hollywood の
Sunset Sound で行われていた。
The Woods / The Woodies は The Challengers の
ヴォーカル曲以外にも多くの TVジングルを歌っており、
それらは Richard Delvy の利益となった。
例えば The Challengers at the Teenage Fair (GNP 2010)
でヴォーカルトラックを担当しているのが The Woodies
である。Richard George をリードヴォーカルにした
セッションでは Richard George & The Woodies 名義で
録音しておりバックアップで Richard George, Ray Duron,
John Mead, Jim Crouch そして Richard Delvy が
ヴォーカルを担当した。
The Spartans ザ・スパルタンズ名義でリリースした The Woodies
の日本盤シングルを掲載しとく。

先ずラベルのヴァリエーション説明。
ラベル中央右にプリントされた出版社のクレジットが
Number One Publ. となってるのが初版、それのプロモ盤。
次に 4-Star Sales となってるのと、そのプロモ盤。
このシングルは1963年の3月にリリースされて
いるが、資料によると1962年の12月に
レコーディングセッションが行われてる。
当時 Gary Usher は Dennis McCarthy を連れて
Tijuana (ティファナ） に小旅行に出かけた。
その時に書いたのが "R.P.M." だ。
このシングルと The Four Speeds のセカンドシングル
共に Mike Borchetta が共作者で共同プロデュース
となっているが、実際には "R.P.M." の多くは
Gary Usher が単独で書いており、楽曲の管理は両面とも
Number One Publishing となっている。
その為か Mike Borchetta はセッション費用を払うことで
The Four Speeds の共作者＆共同プロデューサーと
なったと言われてる。元々 Mike Borchetta は
Challenge Records のオーナーの一人 Joe Johnson
や株主で The Champs のメンバー Dave Burgess、
楽曲管理の Four Star Music とは旧知の間柄だったし、
マスターテープを Challenge Records に売り込んだのも
彼だった。Challenge Records はその配下として
Four Star Music という楽曲管理会社を持っており
1962年12月に Gary Usher はレコードアーティスト
として契約し翌年4月にはソングライターとして契約を
している。恐らくビジネスライクな Mike Borchetta は
セッション費用の肩代わりの代償としてロイヤリティー
の半分を得る為に共作者としてのクレジットを取引
したのだろう。そういった裏事情は1枚のシングルが
リリースされるまでには良くある事だ。"R.P.M." で収録
されたホットロッドの爆音は San Fernando Drag Strip
の短距離コースで録音されたテープを Gary Usher
が編集したものだ。これは以前彼が The Beach Boys
の "409" で体験した録音方法をさらに進歩させたもので
Gary Usher はこの曲を "409" に類似させさらに進化
させた事に満足していた。彼の初期作品によくある
間奏部でのキーボードの反復メロディーは Gary Usher
も Richard Burns も共にリズムギターを担当していた
ことからリードギターパートをオルガンでという産物だった。
結果的にそれが効して疾走感溢れるヴォーカルが
際立ちこれら満足の高いレコーディングによって
Gary Usher は Beach Boys との対抗意識を表した。
この時に集められたメンバーは
Gary Usher (Lead Vocal), Dennis McCarthy (Keyboard),
Richard Burns (Guitar) を中心に構成された。
The Sunsets と The Four Speeds はリリースナンバー
が連番なのでほとんど同じメンバーによってレコーディング
されたものと推測されていたが、Gary Usher は根本的な
リズムセクションを代えてレコーディングに臨んでいる。
Gary Usher はカーソングを The Four Speeds で、
サーフィン他のユースカルチャーは The Sunsets でと
プロジェクト化していた。そうする事によってヒットの可能性を
2局面から見出そうとしていたという。
先ず The Four Speeds のセッションには Wayne Edwards
に代え、当時 Gary Usher の家に同居させていた
Dennis Wilson をドラムスで参加させ、"My Sting Ray" では
Brian Wilson と Mike Borchetta もバックコーラスで参加
させている。Bass には Frank Fayad (後に Arthur Lee
率いる Love に参加する）を Dick Burns のバンド
The Indigos から参加させた。

この The Four Speeds は Gary Usher も含めた4人で
写っているプロモーション写真が残されており地元 California
ではローカルヒットとなり実際にショーで出演して演奏していた。
この "R.P.M." は San Fernando から火がつき、一気に
Los Angeles や Orange County のラジオ局までオンエアー
プレイを始めた。もちろん友人の Roger Christian は毎晩
この曲をプレイしていた。またこのローカルヒットという意味
においては Mike Borchetta のプロモーションの功績も大きい。
そして Gary Usher はここで「愛車賛歌」という
ホットロッドミュージックシーンの一つのスタイルを確立させたのだ。
過去カントリーブルーズや R&R やロカビリーシーンにおいて
改造車を題材にした曲は確かに存在した。それらの多くは
富の象徴としてキャデラック等を題材にしたり、またそれを
皮肉った歌だった。またはローカルカーレースの風景描写
をした曲や反抗のイメージとして警察との対立を描いたものだった。
ティーンのライフスタイルとしてホットロッドを歌い若いリスナーの
共有意識を持ちかけたイディオムとしてのロックンロール
はまだ開拓されていなかった。Gary Usher が書いた "409"
や "R.P.M." はこれに続くホットロッドテーマミュージックの
新たな扉を開いたのだ。

Bruce Johnston がセッションミュージシャンを
続けていた頃で、これも多くの Bruce Johnston
の One Off ユニットの一つだ。彼らは1964年にアルバム
Kustom City U.S.A. (Smash MGS-27051/ SRS-67051)
をリリースした。本件シングルはそのアルバムからの
シングルカットである。このユニットは1963年の
The Vettes - Little Ford Ragtop (MGM)
と同じで Bruce Johnston と Steve Douglas
のセッションユニットなのだが、特筆すべきは
Bruce Johnston が歌う彼のこのオリジナル曲が
メロディアスなポップになっていること。
通常 Hot Rod Song は速さやパワーをアピール
するためにアップテンポなビートチューンに
なりがちだが、この曲は彼のメロディーメイカー
としての資質が表れている。
因みに日本ではアルバムからの2曲がシングルカットされた。

New Jersey 州郊外の Paterson 出身の
4人組バンドでシンプルに The Del-Aires と
して知られる。

彼らは俳優で映画監督 Del Tenney のB級ビーチムーヴィー
と言うより半漁人が出てくるB級モンスタームーヴィー
"The Horror of Party Beach" に出演してこの曲も
含めて6曲演奏している。襲われる美女の悲鳴がお約束の
円谷系ホラー劇場といった内容で、安易な発想であるが
音楽と映画のタイアップにおいて、Beach Movie や
Surfin’ Movie はマッチョな男の肉体美を想像させ、
Hot Rod Movie はタフで強い男を想像させる。
これは男性側のアピールであり、ハッピーエンドは
いつも肉体美を誇る男性に可愛い娘が抱きつく
といった安易なストーリーだ。B級だけに低予算の
このビーチホラームーヴィーで、浜辺のビーチパーティー
でホットロッドチューンを Wild Garage Style で歌う
のだから、これほど美味しいプロモーション活動は
なかっただろう。しかし本当の意味でのホラーは本当の
殺人事件となり、このバンドは解散を余儀なくさせられた。
The Del-Aires は実際の映画に出演するチャンスに
飛びつき、スタジオに入り、映画の音楽監督である
Edward Earle と Wilfred Holcombe が書いた曲と
彼らのオリジナル曲を録音した。映画撮影は1963年
の秋に終了し冬には公開される予定だった。
その間 The Del-Aires は地元に戻り当時所属してた
Block Records との提携を破って Coral Records と
契約した。そして Coral Records はこの映画で使用
された曲によるシングル2枚をリリースする事になる。
映画撮影終了直前の1963年8月26日の夜に
彼らは New Jersey で有名なクラブ Angel Lounge
で演奏し、ライヴショーはエネルギッシュなもので
地元警察が騒音条例を施行しようとしたほどの
熱いショーだった。彼らがライヴ終了後に楽器を
車に積み込み始めたとき、群衆の中にいた彼らの
友人 Thomas Trantino と彼の友人 Frank Falco
の二人は警察が来たために緊張し始めた。
Frank Falco は The Del-Aires のギタリストである
Bobby Osborne が酔っ払って演奏できない時には
代わってステージに参加することもあった。
Thomas Trantino は15歳までヘロイン中毒で
Frank Falco は男性の売春婦を装い、強盗の
常習犯だった。彼らは若くして刑務所で出会い
直ぐに友人になった。Frank Falco は仮釈放後に
ローン債務者を殺害して遺体を隠す場所を
Thomas Trantino に懇願していた。
The Del-Aires のライヴに来ていた二人は
まさか警官が来ているとは思わず緊張した。
警察官に見つかった彼らは以前酔っ払った常連客が
バーでピストルを発射したとされる事件に
ついて尋ねられた。警察官の尋問の圧力を受けて
Thomas Trantino は警察官から銃を奪って
命を乞うように屈辱的な嘆願を警察官二人に
させて殺害し逃亡した。Frank Falco は二日後に
身を隠していた The Hotel Manhattan で射殺され、
その後逮捕された Thomas Trantino 電気椅子で
の死刑と宣告された。この殺人事件をきっかけに、
Angel Lounge や他のいくつかの地域のクラブは
自主的に閉鎖されたか、地元の暴力を抑えるために
閉鎖された。この事件後にも Coral Records は
自動的のように The Del-Aires の2枚のシングル
をリリースしているが、やはり世間を怯えさせた
この殺人事件で関わりのあったグループの
シングルリリースのプロモーションは弱く、また
グループ内の意見の衝突も作ってしまい、
1964年にグループは解散してしまう。
映画配給会社の 20th Century Fox は難癖が
ついた事がよほど口惜しかったのか、映画収録曲を
スタジオグループに歌わせて自社レーベルから
リリースさせている。
The Roadsters - Joy Ride / Drag
(20th Century Fox Records 486 Promo) 1964
Ronnie & The Del-Aires ヴァージョンは明らかに
実態のあるガレージバンドのサウンドに対して
The Roadsters のほうは、サウンドやノリが東海岸の
White Doo Wop から出たようなサウンドだ。
余談だが Ronnie & The Del-Aires のこのシングル
は奇跡的に日本でも同年にリリースされていて
ホット・ロッドでぶっとばせ / マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン
(King Records HIT-1109) というのん気な邦題だった。
彼らが出演した映画 "The Horror of Party Beach"
は1964年12月に Del Tenney 監督のもう一つの
B級ホラー “The Curse Of The Living Corpse”
(生きている死体の呪い) とのカップリング上映がされ
広告キャンペーンの一環として、「二本立て映画を
見ながら恐怖で死んだ場合に劇場の責任を免除する」
といった署名をするよう求めたが、そんなキャンペーン
も通用しなかったのか、映画会社から依頼された
The Del-Aires は劇場のロビーやドライブインの
売店で演奏するために短期間の再結成した。
彼らは映画で取り上げられた曲を演奏し、無料の
プロモーションシングルを配り、興奮した劇場の
常連客のためにサインをした。
そんなこんなもあってか、この映画はカルトムーヴィー
クラシックとして世間に騒がれ、海賊版 VHS、
深夜の再放送と未だに人気が高い。
The Del-Aires のメンバー Gary Robert Jones (Bass)
はサイケデリックバンド The Queens Tangerine Machine
で演奏し、リードギターとリズムギターである
Ronnie Linares と Bobby Osborne はどちらも
フロリダに移住した。

これはB面に Gary Paxton 作のホットロッドソングが
収録されており、この歌は同年11月にリリースされる
Dick Dale のアルバム Checkered Flag
(Capitol T/ST-2002) にも収録されそこが Gary Usher
と Gary Paxton の最初の接点となる。
因みにこの曲は Gary Paxton 自身も1964年に
リリースしている。
ロスアンジェルス東部の El Monte 出身の
Douglas Salamanca は高校時代の友人 Freddy Ruiz と
チカノ系デュオを組んで Doug and Freddy として
デビューし、2枚目のシングルで Gary Paxton-Kim Fowley
が共同プロデュースした曲をリリースした。その後
Kim Fowley の下で The Memories (Old Sound 809)
の変名で彼らは1枚シングルをリリースした。
1961年になって彼らは元のデュオ名義で Gary Paxton
のプロデュースによる Teen Doo-wop シングル
Take A Chance On Love / And I Know You're Lyin'
(Finer Arts 101) をリリース。そんな縁もあって
Gary Paxton の自信作 The Scavenger を
Doug Salma and Highlanders 名義でリリースした。
Dion スタイルのかっこいいロッカーチューンで
女性コーラスをバックに従えている。
この女性コーラスは The Surf Bunnies だろう。
何故なら彼女達の歌は全て Gary Paxton の
スタジオで録音されてる。
その後も Doug Salma は Lord Douglas Byron の
変名で Big Bad Ho Dad, Surfin’ Santa 等の
Surfin' Novelty song をリリースした。

ヴォーカルグループ The Dell-Coeds のメンバーの
Richard George は自作 "Love In Return" を1961年
にリリースしており、このグループは3人の女性
ヴォーカルをフロントに立てたグループだった。彼らは
The Pendletones 時代の The Beach Boys と共に
パーティーでパフォーマンスする仲だった。

彼らは The Phaetons としてデビューし
Sahara Records でシングルを2枚リリース、
そして The Beatles 初来米で盛り上がる1964年に
Del-Fi から The Scramblers 名義で
カウンターソング The Beatle Walk / The Beatle Blues
(Del-Fi Records 4237) をリリースした。
そして最後に The Haciendas と名を変えて
Four Seasons “Sherry” のアンサーソングを
Four Seasons 風に歌ったのがこれ。

Hot Rod Song と言うより間抜けな男を題材にした
ノベルティーソングの範疇だが、やたらとかっこいい
カーエフェクトを挿入してるので Surfin’ & Hot Rod
コレクターにも人気が高い。

Rally Packs - Move Out, Little Mustang
(7: Imperial 66036) 1964
先ずはレベルヴァリエーションの説明。
ラベルデザインの細かな変化よりも注目すべきはラベル中央右の
カタログ番号上のマトリクス番号だ。初期が IM-5900 だったが
プロモ盤も同様に IM 5901 へと変わる。
Phil Sloan & Steve Barri は Lou Adler から
Jan & Dean の為のセッションヴォーカルグループ
を探している事を聴かされる。Jan & Dean の
バックを担当していた The Matadors は当時
Screen Gems の契約下だったが Liberty Records
と録音契約を持っていた。The Matadors と交代して
Jan & Dean のセッションを担当する事になった
Phil Sloan と Steve Barri だが Liberty Records は
当時ヒップなサーフィンバンドを物色していた。
Sloan & Barri は Jan & Dean に幾つか曲を
提供しており、その中の
"(Here They Come) From All Over The World" は
T.A.M.I. Show のテーマ曲としてリリースされているが、
この曲はその後 Fantastic Baggys のアルバムに
収録される "Surfin's Back Again" へと展開する。
ちょうど Jan & Dean のアルバム "Dead Man’s Curve"
がリリースされる3日前に Lou Adler は Screen Gems
の幹部と意見が衝突し会社を退職する。Lou Adler の
役職は彼のアシスタントだった Charles "Chuck" Kaye
が速やかに引継いだ。これは計算された行動だった
のだろう、実は Lou Adler は一ヶ月前には
Pierre Cossette、Bobby Roberts らと
Dunhill Production を設立したばかりだったのだ。
そしてこれに合わせるように彼は Dunhill Production
が管理する音楽出版社 Trousdale Music を設立して、
最初の契約は Phil Sloan & Steve Barri と行っている。
即ちソングライターコンビの Phil Sloan & Steve Barri
を Screen Gems から引き抜いたのだ。
同様に Jan & Dean も Dunhill Production の管理下
に置かれた。実際 Phil Sloan & Steve Barri は
アルバム "Dead Man’s Curve" 収録曲にて多くの
ヴォーカルを被せており
"The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" や
"Hey Little Freshman" では Phil Sloan の
素晴らしいファルセットヴォーカルが確認出来る。
特に "The Little Old Lady" で聴かせるファルセット
ヴォーカルは長年 Brian Wilson だと思われていたが、
実は Phil Sloan のファルセットが大きくフューチャー
されていたのだ。Jan Berry は IQ 180以上もある
天才でレコーディングの多くを仕切っていた。
しかし Phil Sloan & Steve Barri の適応力の高さや
演奏能力の高さを認めており、正確に役割をこなせる
彼らのサポートを好んでいた。また Jan Berry は
Phil Sloan の声が自分に調和する事を実感していた
という。当時は Monoral と Stereoの録音を分けて
おりラジオオンエアーを考慮し多くのテイクが録音
されている。これらの録音は Jan Berry が
Lou Adler に見せた忠誠心の表れでもあり、
これによって Phil Sloan & Steve Barri もヴォーカル
グループとして大きく成長した。
しかし彼らを引き抜かれ怒り心頭だった Screen Gems
は6月になって Jan Berry とLou Adler に対して
民事訴訟を行うように通達してきた。
Screen Gems は Jan Berry に対してアルバム
"Dead Man’s Curve" のソングライタークレジット
に関するクレームを全て放棄するように強要した。
これは Jan Berry と Jill Gibson が共作した曲
にまで及んでいる。"Little Old Lady from Pasadena"
は Jan Berry が作曲していたが Screen Gems は
Don Altfeld & Roger Christian のみのクレジットを
執行しようとした。また Liberty Records の社長
Alvin Bennett をも名指しして、Dunhill Production と
Trousdale Music を叩こうとした。結局両者の間に
妥協案が提出されトラブルは解決に向って行った。
その結果 Jan Berry はソングライティングと
プロデュースの面で Screen Gems の契約下でいること
を法的に義務付けられた。それを受けて Jan Berry は
名前を伏せて Trousdale Music に曲を残そうと
努力したと言うが、彼らのアルバム "Dead Man’s Curve"
はそれらトラブルが原因でプロモーションが弱くなっていた。
しかし Jan & Dean の為のセッションを皮切りに
Surfin' & Hot Rod Movement に参加する等、1964年は
Sloan & Barri にとって本格始動の年であったと言えよう。
当時彼らが書いた "Tell 'Em I'm Surfin'" は元々シングル
だけのセッションだった。そのデモテープを聴いた
Liberty Records はアルバムパッケージとして契約を
望んできた。後日 Lou Adler は Phil Sloan & Steve Barri
をレコーディンググループとして拘束されたくなかったと
語っており、このプロジェクトに乗り気がなかった事を
伺わせている。Lou Adler は Phil Sloan & Steve Barri
の才能を見抜いており、Liberty Records 傘下となった
Imperial Records にレコードアーティストとして契約させる。
それは設立されたばかりの Dunhill Production の
為であった。Lou Adler が彼らをレコーディンググループ
として契約束縛させたくなかったのは、後に Lou Adler
が独立レーベルを設立するプランが水面下で
動いていたためと推測される。手始めに彼らは
The Rally Packs 名義にてJan & Dean のセッションの
アウトテイクを用いて Brian Wilson-Roger Christian
が書いた "Move Out, Little Mustang" をシングル
リリースする (Imperial 66036) これは Fantastic Baggys
への布石となる。
A Dunhill Production, Trousdale Music Inc. と
クレジットされたこのシングルは Screen Gems
との論争の火中の栗みたいな存在だった。
本件このシングルが1964年5月にリリースされ
1964年9月に Jan & Dean のアルバム
The Little Old Lady From Pasadena
(Liberty LRP-3377/LST-7377) がリリースされたのだが
本件 Rally Packs - Move Out, Little Mustang の
トラックをそのまま Jan & Dean 名義で B4 に収録している。
Phil Sloan は Jan Berry の声まねが得意だし、Jan Berry も
Phil Sloan の声が自分の歌声に調和する事が好きだった。
しかしそのままアルバムに収録しても当時誰も違和感を
感じなかったのか、この事は話題にもならなかった。
で、途中導入される女性の声は Jill Gibson によるものだ。
B面曲 "Bucket Seats" は上記 Jan & Dean アルバムの
A5 に収録された "Old Ladies Seldom Power Shift” と言う
インスト曲にカークラッシュの効果音を導入している。
不思議な事に同じトラックなのだが Jan & Dean の
"Old Ladies Seldom Power Shift” は Jan Berry-Dean Torrance
の共作クレジットとなってるが、Rally Packs "Bucket Seats" は
作者が Don Altfeld 単独となっている。これは Screen Gems
との論争を避けるために Lou Adler が配慮したのだろう。
因みに Phil Sloan 曰く「私はこのレコーディングで
Brian Wilson には会った事はない」そうだ。
