この曲は彼らの名曲ノヴェルティーソング“Martian Hop”の続編
"Sound Of The Sun" のカップリング曲である。
火星で火星人のダンスブームを発見した彼らは他の星々での探査
を始めた。そして太陽でダンスブームが起きてる事に
気づいた彼らは太陽に近づき観察しようとする。
これこそが “Martian Hop” 新章だったのだ。
まるで映画「猿の惑星」をも想起させる展開だ、
嗚呼恐るべしダンスブーム！
因みに私は日本盤シングルのジャケを見て
男が女性の背後からカンチョウをしようとほくそ笑んでいると
思って、私は鼻水出るほど笑ってしまった。

Johnny Fisher - Tan Dan

当時 John Fisher はこの Park Avenue レーベルで働いていた。
その後、彼は Crusader Records の社長に就任することになる。
本件シングルは1961年10月2日をピークに全米１位となった
Jimmy Dean "Big Bad John" に対するサーフィン版パロディーソングで
作者クレジットが P. Pipole-R. Regan となってるが恐らく
P. Pipolo のミスクレジットと Russ Regan だろう。
プロデュースの Gram-Fisher は Gary Paxton の Garex Records
の名サーフバンド The Cornells のプロデューサーチームで
恐らく本件 Johnny Fisher (John Fisher) が含まれる。
アレンジはノヴェルティーソング業界の番長 Gary Paxton が担当してる。
1964年、John Fisher は Crusader Records の社長を務め、
彼は Terry Stafford の “Suspicion” という大ヒットを生み出した。
1964年8月15日の Billboard で発表された通知によると
John Fisher は突然 Crusader Records を去り、代わりに
Harry Maselow (Dobie Gray を育てた一人) が就任した。
通知には John Fisher が去った理由は書かれていないが、
1964年10月に Billboard は、John Fisher が Current Records
を設立した事を発表した。

Stan Ross - Drowning In The Surf

Gold Star Studios の設立者で有名エンジニアーと同名なので
勘違いされやすいが、本件はカルトな人気を持つソングライター
兼俳優の Stan Ross (Stanley Ralph Ross) である。
彼が出演した映画やテレビ番組は数え上げるときりが無いが
一連の Beach Party Movies や The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964),
Batman (1966), The Monkees (1966), Columbo (1971) etc etc
早い話がこの人はアメリカのサブカルチャーファンにとって有名な
アイコンである。驚くべきことに本件ノヴェルティー作品が
リリースされたのが1962年10月であり Beach Boys - Surfin (Candix)
が1961年にリリースされてローカル・ヒットになるや早速
メロディーを引用し "Drowning In The Surf" (波でおぼれる) と
リアクションしてる。という事は数ある Beach Boys への
カウンターリアクション/ノヴェルティソングの最初期の
作品となり、Beach Boys のマニアックなコレクターや
60s アメリカン・サブカルチャーファンの収集対象となる。

Ray Stevens - The Old English Surfer

先ずはお馴染み Mercury Records のラベル3種。
The Hondells でもそうだったように、この時期
Stock copy は赤ラベルと黒ラベルがあり、White Label Promo copy
と合わせて3種類となる。
アメリカを代表する天才芸能人 Ray Stevens のシングルオンリー。
彼は後にグラミー賞を受賞するが、彼の novelty singer としての
活動が如何に愛されていたかが解るユーモラスな作風だ。
A面は葬儀屋の歌で、1965年としては珍しく Fuzz guitar を
冒頭で効果的に使っており「葬送行進曲」をイントロに配している。
本件B面 "The Old English Surfer" は Fiddle を冒頭で用いて
イギリス人キャラクターを紹介しているが恐らくプロデュースを担当した
Jerry Kennedy の演奏と思われ、パートナーで南部の帝王の
Shelby Singleton が共同でプロデュースをしている。また曲中では
Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coupe" のフレーズを使って滑稽な
サーファーを歌っているため Stan Ross - Drowning In The Surf
同様にマニアックな Beach Boys コレクター達の必須アイテム
となっている。

80年以降のサーフノヴェルティーソングの中では
最高傑作との呼び声も高い。
ロシア民謡 “ポーリュシカ・ポーレ”を使った見事な転調。
もはや芸術の域に達したノヴェルティーソングだ。
この曲の作者 William Martin (Bill Martin) について
記述しておこう。彼はアメリカのミュージシャン、
ソングライター、脚本家、コメディアン、声優。
そして The Monkees の Michael Nesmithの友人だ。
Bill Martin は The Monkees の "All of Your Toys" の作者で
その後、彼はシンガーソングライターの Harry Nilsson と
ソングライターコンビを組み、シングルとLPで2つの異なる
ヴァージョンで Harry Nilsson が1969年にリリース
した曲 "Rainmaker" を書いた。
Harry Nilsson はまた、Bill Martin の書いたいくつかの曲
“Fairfax Rag” や “City Life” などを歌った。
Bill Martin が書いた “Evergreen (Earth Anthem)” は
Cyrus Faryar, The Turtles, Dan Fogelberg らによって録音された。
因みに Bill Martin は1970年に自身のアルバムを Harry Nilsson
のプロデュースでリリースしたが全く売れなかった。

Dave York, またの名を Dave Kinzie と言う。
本件シングルの前に Gary Usher works でも知られる俳優の
Don Brandon の1962年シングル "Oh, My Love" (Lancelot LA-5)
を Dave Kinzie が書いており本件同様に Gary Paxton の
アレンジでリリースしていた。
恐らく後を受け継いだ P-K-M Records の P が Gary Paxton で
K が Dave Kinzie、そして M が本件プロデュースを担当した
Frederick Mikesell の3名の頭文字で設立した節税レーベル
だと推測される。当然ながら録音は Gary Paxton Studio だろう。
Gary Paxton の Studioは後に Curt Boettcher が好んで使用した。
Friar Tuck, Your Gang, Tommy Roe - It's Now Winter's Day,
そして The Ballroom も Gary Paxton と Curt Boettcher の
共同作業で録音されていったのだから、West Coast music
の歴史とその発展のルーツを探訪すれば、本件シングルに辿り着く。
Dave York は本名を David Harold Kinzie と言い、1937年7月23日
に生まれインディアナ州ハモンドの農場で育った。
彼は8歳のときに母親が亡くなるまで農場で育ち、彼は若い頃から
農場手伝いとして働き、青果スタンドのヘルパー、新聞配達、
ガソリンスタンドヘルパー、レストランのキッチンヘルパーと
様々な仕事をした苦労人だった。
そして母親が亡くなった後は普通の子供時代を過ごしていたにも
かかわらず、彼の父親は再婚した。しかし彼は新しい母親から
良い扱いを感じなかったため12歳で学校を辞めて逃げ出した。
彼は兄と一緒に暮らすためにカリフォルニアまでやって来た。
David Kinzie は18歳になったとき、空軍に入隊した。
彼はレーダーオペレーターとして訓練を受けて、
日本と韓国の空軍基地で勤務した。
彼が日本で過ごした時間が、彼の日本語への愛の舞台となった。
彼は日本食レストランに行くこと以上に日本語を披露する事が
大好きだった。
そして名誉除隊により空軍を退役した後、彼は人生で自分の足跡を
残すためにカリフォルニアに戻った。彼は何か特別なことをしたい
という考えを持っていたがどうやってそれをするのか全く
分からなかったので独学で音楽を始めた。
間もなくして彼は Gary Paxton と出会い、Gary Paxton の
スタジオで働き始めた。1962 年は彼の年になった。それが彼の
人生を決定づけた。彼はビーチミュージックの波に
最初に乗った一人になった。
彼が Dave York And The Beachcombers 名義でリリースした
"Beach Party" は Arrange を Gary Paxton が手掛け先ず
Lancelot Records LA-6 で1962年5月に "(Let's Have A) Beach Party"
としてリリースされ、それをレーベルの閉鎖に伴い
Gary Paxton, Dave Kinzie, Frederick Mikesell の3人で共同運営
する彼らの頭文字から名づけた P-K-M Records 6700
でタイトルをシンプルに "Beach Party" として同年6月に再リリース
したところ8月25日に Billboard Top 100 チャートにランクインし、
最終的にピークで95位というヒットとなった。
Lancelot のラベルではプロデュースが
Kinzie, Mikesell. (Dave Kinzie,Frederick Mikesell) と印刷されたが
P-K-M Records では Paxton, Kinzie, Mikesell
(Gary Paxton, Dave Kinzie, Frederick Mikesell) と印刷され
London Records Inc. の全国配給がクレジットされた。
彼は多くの人が「一発屋」と呼ぶ人物になったが、David Kinzie は
2年めのスランプを乗り越えようと狂ったように努力した。
彼はその後 Gary Paxton のスタジオで
Bobby (Boris) Pickett And The Crypt-Kickers "Monster Mash"
(Garpax Records P-1) のレコーディングに参加した。
このノヴェルティーソングは1962年7月に最初のリリースがされ、
好評を得たので Garpax Records 44167 でピクチャースリーヴを
付けて1962年8月に再リリースしたところ9月8日に Billboard Top 100
チャートにランクインし一気に全米1位の大ヒットとなり
遂にはノヴェルティーソングの金字塔となった。
しかし David Kinzie は音楽業界でそれ以上をやり遂げることが
できなかった。彼は得意の日本語で1970年代から有名な
日本料理店「山城ハリウッド」で働き始めワン・ヒット・ワンダー
の日々を過去のものにすることができた。

Ray Holland - Surfboard Stag

先ずこの Margo のレーベルに書かれたレーベル名の由来
Music And Romance Go On 愛とロマンスは行き続ける
といった恥ずかしくなるようなネーミングである。
この California 州南部内陸の Riverside の Margo Records の
ファーストシングルが本件だ。
でこのおじさん、恐らくRiverside のローカル R&B シンガーで、
この自作曲どう聴いても Eddie Cochrane "Summertime Blues" を
The Coasters のように歌ったらこんなになっちまった的な歌だ。
しかもかっこいいとかっこ悪いの境界線上をまたいでる。
その理由はあの "Summertime Blues" の印象的なフレーズを
ギターでやればいいのに、サックスでやってる。
そのくせ最初の間奏部ではかっこいいギターブレイク、
2度目の間奏部ではホットなサックスブレイクを入れるといった
変態アレンジを施しノヴェルティーチューンへと昇華させてる。

本件カナダのグループで、カナダとアメリカの双方で
同じナンバーでリリースされている。
この曲は古い童謡 Charming Billy" (Billy Boy) を
サーフヴァージョンに書き換えたもので、
Charming Billy" (Billy Boy) の場合は古い世代なら
小学校で歌っていたお子ちゃまソングとなる、
Billy Boy は彼の母親からさまざまな質問をされ、
その答えはすべて、若すぎると言われている彼女と
結婚したいという彼の探求に焦点を当てている。
本件シングルは初心な少年 Willie Boy が彼の母親から
さまざまな質問をされる滑稽な歌で、Willie Boy は
彼女について行ってサーフィンサウンドを聴いたけど
自分が若すぎてお母さんから離れられなかったと答え
彼女について行って Surf City に行ったけど
やっぱり怖くてお母さんから離れられなかったと言っている。
御存知 Jan & Dean の Surf City は The Beacj Boys の
Brian Wilson が書いて1963年6月15日をピークに
全米1位となり、Surfin' というハワイのローカルスポーツ
がアメリカ本土の西海岸の若者達によって新しいライフスタイル
へと変っていく現象を表した象徴的な歌だった。
本件シングルは、それをカナダが「やっぱりボクにはまだ
サーフィンは怖かった」と古い童謡を使ってリアクションした
ノヴェルティーソングだ。

この手の企画アルバムを作って当然だろう的な
The Zip-Codes - Mustang! (Liberty LRP 3367 mono / LST-7367 stereo)
から2曲を紹介。
ノヴェルティーソング業界のパイオニアーでもある
Gary Paxton は自身のスタジオを持っており
London Records 配下による Garpax という自身のレーベルを
運営していた。
そこでリリースした The Captivations (Garpax 44179) の
シングル製作も彼によるもので、録音メンバーに Buzz Cason
を参加させていた。

タイアップの話で Gary Paxton に依頼がきたものと推測される。
それ故に本件 The Zip-Codes - Mustang!

The Road Runners -
The New Mustang (London LL-3381 mono / PS-381 stereo) は
同じ時期に Gary Paxton がセッションミュージシャンを
集めて制作した姉妹作品という事になる。
本件スタジオユニットの The Zip-Codes だが、録音メンバーは
Al Capps, Stan Farber, Ron Hicklin, Bob Zwirn,
Jerry McKenzie, James Burton, Sonny Curtis,
Russell Bridges (Leon Russell)
Producer, Instrumental Arranged by Buzz Cason.

ヴォーカルパートで参加した Al Capps, Stan Farber, Ron Hicklin そして
Mr. "Z" こと Bob Zwirn の4人は元々 The Eligibles (Capitol, Imperial etc)
として活動していたヴォーカルグループであり、Hanna-Barbera Records の
ノヴェルティーサーフアルバム Squiddly Diddly の正体も彼らだった。
彼らはその歌声を買われて多くのバックシンガーズとしてもレコードに
参加してる。その中には取り分け日本でも有名な The Love Generation や
The Going Thing でも有名な John Bahler and Tom Bahler らとの
The California Dreamers もあり、The Zip-Codes もその一環だった。
Stan Kenton のバックでドラマーをしていた Jerry McKenzie,
Elvis Presley のギタリスト James Burton,
Buddy Holly 亡き後も The Crickets のメンバーとして活躍していた
ギタリストの Sonny Curtis, そして Russell Bridges 事若き日の
Leon Russell がキーボードを担当している。

Al Barkle - Muscle Beach (Frantic 45-F-108) にも同じ事が
言えるが、盆踊りでもできそうなホノボノリズムだ。
凄いのはハワイアンギターがふんだんに使われてるが
間奏部になると Duane Eddy 顔負けの Twang Guitar
が披露され、ふと盆踊りしていた自分が恥ずかしくなる。
盆踊りするなっ！と怒られたようである。

多作なソングライター Jay Goodis がブームに乗って
書いた Surfin’ ソング。Jan & Dean “Surf City” の便乗商法で
も考えたか “Surfin' City” としたのだが、東西の海岸カルチャー
のギャップなのだろう。学生のカジュアルパーティーの
乗りで作ってるからワイルドな競技としての Surfin’ を
完全に無視した結果、リバーブの効いたサーフギターは
皆無で、教室のオルガンで歌う合唱曲の Polka レベルに
仕上がっている（笑）
A-sideよりhot sax breakを持ってるB-sideのほうが
かっこいいロックンロールだ！

ふふふふ、これは誰も知るまい。ケンタッキー生まれの
コメディアン、エンターテイナーの Pete Stamper が
残したノヴェルティー級ホットロッドロッカーの隠れた逸品。
Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Lincoln, Studebaker 等をつないだ
言葉遊び的なタイトルだが、自作でギターブレイクも入れてる。
1964年に Pete Stamper はこの曲を自身が持つ自主レーベル
Rockcastle RC-1001 からもリリースした。
レーベル名は彼が住んでいたケンタッキー州の郡にちなんで
名付けられた。
因みに本件、アメリカのノヴェルティーソング博士の
私の友人も知らなかった。
博士曰く「私はこの歌を聞いたことがなかったが、 かわいい曲だ。
Johnny Cash がこれを聞いて1976年の曲 "One Piece at a Time" を
思いついたのではないかと思う。」との事。

The Sweater Boys -
We Ain't Gonna Make It Through Summer / Because She's Different

Four Seasons follower の一つだが、その詳細は不明だ。
どちらかと言えば Four Seasons の変名の The Wonder Who
のようなノヴェルティーチューンのサマーポップだが
作曲家の Neil Sheppard, Shadow Mann こと Art Wayne が書いた
B面のダンスチューンがかっこいい。ホルンを効果的に
導入する等、プロダクションのクレジットが注目される。
Produced by Bill Silva and Chuck Sagle となっているが
Bill Silva は Diplomacy Records の社長で Soul 系の
ソングライター、プロデューサーである。
彼は Al Verissimo とソングライターコンビを組んで白人の
Jim Doval & The Gauchos の一連のビートソウルチューンを
書いた。因みに Jim Doval は当時日本でもシングルリリースしてる。
Chuck Sagle はオーケストラリーダーとして楽団ものや
ポピュラーシーンでも有名だが、彼を最も評価するならば
やはり Space Age Pop の第一人者としての名声だろう。
これは音楽スタイルではなく、1950年代と1960年代の宇宙時代
におけるメキシコやアメリカの作曲家やソングライターに
関連するポップやイージーリスニングといった音楽のサブジャンル。
バチェラー・パッド・ミュージック (Bachelor Pad Music)
またはラウンジ・ミュージックとしても知られ、この時代の精神や、
戦後の強力な経済とテクノロジー・ブームに基づいた楽観主義、
および人類の宇宙進出初期における興奮に触発されたもの。
と言うことは、本件1966年のリリースだが、その楽観的で
陽気なサウンドから推察するに、1963年11月22日の
ケネディー大統領暗殺によってお蔵入りしていた1964年の
作品であることが伺える。

オーストラリアのダンサー、俳優、舞台監督、振付師。
間抜けなコーラスをバックにした陽気なサーフビーチポップだが
良く聴くと1963年の Dick Dale and His Deltones "Secret Surfin' Spot"
(Roger Christian-Gary Usher 作) のパクリである事が解る。
作者クレジットは Magoon Jr.-Miller (Eaton Magoon, Jr.-Eddie Miller)

ホットロッドイラストレイターの William Campbell が
描いたモンスター系のコミカルなキャラクターを
モチーフとしたプラモデルやフィギュアが発売された。
結局この奇妙なモンスターキャラクターはディズニーに
対するアンチテーゼだ。甘いキャラなんかに満足できない
年齢層はアヴァンギャルドなキャラに魅せられるのだ。
日本で言うところの「キモカワ」ってとこか。
現在でも根強いマニアがいるそのモンスターキャラクター
を題材にし、Gary Usher のノヴェルティー路線が
開花した2枚のモンスター系ノヴェルティーアルバムが
Mercury Records からリリースされた。

この2枚はどちらもサウンド的には同じで、時期的に同じ
Mercury の The Hondells のセッションを流用して録音されている。
この The Silly Surfers との姉妹プロジェクトである
The Weird-Ohs のアルバムから6曲ずつピックアップ
したカップリングで、このモンスターキャラクターの
プラモデル会社の Hawk が自社レーベル Hailyで編集した
宣伝用アルバム (Hairy HR-101）をリリースしている。
これらのアルバムでも Chuck Girard がリードヴォーカルを
担当し楽しい Surf Style Vocal を聴かせる。
プロデュースはこのプラモデルの発案者でおもちゃや
ゲームの有名な製作者の Reuben Klamer
そして Direction は Nick Venet が担当した。
楽曲は Gary Usher-Roger Christian
の他にも Jimmie Haskell, Dave Weiss らが提供している。

曲中叫ばれるカワバンガ (Cowabunga) とは、1960年代
のサーファー文化における有名なスラングの一つである。
主な使用例として、サーフィンでうまく波に乗ることが
できたときに発せられる、「やったぜ!」などがある。
この言葉は、1950年代のアメリカの子供向けテレビ番組
Howdy Doody に登場するキャラクター、Chief Thunderthud
によって使われた言葉、"Kawabonga" に由来する。
ティンカ・トンカ・インディアン (Tinka Tonka Indians、
Princess Summerfall Winterspring と Chief Featherman
による架空の部族) の言葉で、彼らの部族があらゆる驚きを
表現するために用いられる "Kawagoopa" という言葉があったが
後に Chief Thunderthud (Ooragnak 族に属した) が同様の
感嘆として "Kawabonga" を使い始めた。1960年代この番組
を見て育ったサーファーたちが、この言葉をサーフィンの場で
用いて、いつしか「カワバンガ (Cowabunga) / やったぜ!」という
現在の語形に変化していった。

折りしも The Munsters (CBS), The Addams Family (ABC)
とモンスターホラーコメディーのテレビ番組が始まった
1964年、まさにアメリカではモンスターホラーコメディーの
ムーヴメント到来！とリリースされた企画アルバムから。
グループ名の The Ghouls (グールズ)とは、墓場を荒らして
人肉を食する悪鬼達のことだ。ゴールスでもクールス
でもないので要注意（笑）しかし何とも物騒だが、
サウンド自体は Monster Hot Rod の部類に入るもので、
この手のファンには人気がある。夏場に聴けば、ただで
さえ涼しい感じのする Surf Music であるが、更に涼しく
なることうけあいである。
若き Phil Sloan のファルセットハーモニーをフューチャーし
1964年６月27日をピークに全米3位の大ヒットとなった
Jan & Dean - The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena) の
パロディーソングが本件であり、1964年10月に録音された。
本件は Chuck Girard がお婆ちゃんの声でリードヴォーカルを
担当しており、彼がいかに芸達者であったかが解る
ノヴェルティーソングの傑作だ。
曲のタイトルにもなっている Transylvania とはルーマニア中部に
広がる地域で、ドラキュラ伝説発祥の地、ドラキュラの故郷である。
小さくて迷惑なナターシャという老婆がドラキュラの故郷から
やって来て街でドタバタ騒ぎを繰り返すといった内容で
サーフィン＆ホットロッド業界では既定路線の
コミックソングである。

Hanna-Barbera は、かつて Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM）で
トムとジェリーを制作した William Hanna and Joseph Barbera
が1957年7月7日に設立した、アメリカのアニメーション制作会社。
そのアニメ会社資本のレコード会社なので
良質な子供向けレコードが製作されていて、本件アルバムも
そんなチルドレンレコードの一つ。
歌は The Hanna-Barbera Singers が変名で担当したのだが
このシンガーズ、Stan Farber, Al Capps, Ron Hicklin からなり、
彼らは元々 The Eligibles (Capitol, Imperial etc) として活動
していたヴォーカルグループであり、その歌声を買われて
多くのバックシンガーズとしてもレコードに参加してる。
その中には取り分け日本でも有名な The Love Generation や
The Going Thing でも有名な John Bahler and Tom Bahler らとの
The California Dreamers, The Zip-Codes (Liberty) なんかも含まれる。
興味深い事に、アメリカのアニメ＆チルドレンレコードの
マニアコレクター達に言わせると、当時このアルバムは
ストーリーレコード（物語中心に収録された）じゃないので
子供たちはパスして購入しなかったらしい。日本でも60年代の
アニメレコードとなると音楽面でも巨匠が手掛けるケースは
少なくはなかった。しかし流石に Surfin’ という西海岸限定の
特殊なスポーツ＆レジャー文化ですら子供相手のレコードに
反映させるのがアメリカの凄さだろう。
その後の日本のアニメの進化があればこその、日本の
アニメソングの発展ではあるが、日本では子供相手に
Surfin’ music を製作するといった発想は今も昔も無い。
