戦前のアメリカポピュラーミュージックの作曲家、
ピアニストの Al Sherman を父に持つディズニー
専属の兄弟ソングライターコンビ
Robert B. Sherman - Richard M. Sherman が
書いた曲。彼らは Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book,
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 等を書いた事でも知られる。
Annette と The Beach Boys が映画でも
共演したモンキーダンスナンバーの傑作。

Baby Terry Hall - Take A Good Look At Me

冒頭のAメロでいきなり大瀧さんの名曲「熱き心に」
を想起させ、即座に私の鼻の両方の穴は大きく膨らみ
青函トンネル上り下り開通状態になった。
その後続いて導入された “Be My Baby” 風の
ドラムブレイクを聴いて私はエビぞりしすぎて
ブリッジしてしまいそうになり腰を痛めてしまった。
Ohio 州のヴォーカルグループ Bocky & The Visions
のマネージャーでソングライターだった Redda Robbins
がライターとプロデュースでクレジットされてるので、
この曲のバックヴォーカルは Bocky & The Visions
だと解る。メジャーレーベルと言えど、ローカル
プロダクションの作品だから当時の流行を取り入れようと
”Be My Baby” やサーフハーモニーと何でも入れ込んで、
挙句に “I Know I Know” と語りも挿入する何でもありの
ガールポップで、聴いていて2度美味しい。

Dee D. Hope - California Surfer

Surfin’ ブーム到来に沸く California,
1963年にリリースされたこのシングルは後に
Curt Boettcher とのコラボレイト
Color Him In (Verve Records V6-5015) でも知られる
カルトなシンガーソングライター Bobby Jameson が両面
書いている。実は当時彼は The Beach Boys や
Jan & Dean の地元ライヴではオープニングアクトを務めて
いた経歴があり、その裏で Frank Zappa や後の Crazy Horse
(Neil Young and Crazy Horse) とも親交があった。
また本件このシングルでは後に The Mothers Of Invention
のメンバーになる Elliot Ingber がギターを担当しているので
マニア人気が高い。因みに Bobby Jameson のデビューシングル
でも Elliot Ingber がギターを演奏しているので、本件シングルで
バックコーラスを担当してるのは彼らだろう。
Dee D. Hope こと Hope Hayes Guidici は当時19歳で、
この録音は Hollywood の United Recorders でまだ残暑厳しい
1963年9月4日に行われて直ぐにシングルはリリースされている。

ラベルのヴァリエーション説明
ラベル１と２のプロモ盤を見て解るように
この初期型デザインでしかホワイトラベルプロモ盤が
確認されてないので、これが初版と思われる。
その次のラベル左右のクレジットが2列から3列に変わり
最後はカタログ番号 B-504 がラベル右にプリントされる。
The Strangeloves と The Angels による
スタジオユニットで、Jean Thomas、The Elegants や
The Belmonts のメンバー達も参加したらしい。
Jean Thomas は優れたガールポップセッションシンガーで
本件ユニット以外でも Rag Dolls, Powder Puffs (Imperial),
Beach Girls (Dynovoice), Calendar Girls (4corners),
Angie & The Chickettes (Jean Thomas & The Angels),
そして彼女の変名 Jeanne Fox (Rainy Day) と
まあこの手のガールポップファンなら必ず聴いた事がある
音源には必ずと言っていいほど彼女は参加していた。
Bob Feldman-Jerry Goldstein-Richard Gottehrer
の通称 Bassett Hand が全部仕切ってるんだから、
彼らが寄せ集めセッションをすればこんな布陣に
なるという解り易いサンプルだ。他愛も無い歌詞だが
実に楽しげに歌っているのがよろしい。

そしてプロデューサークレジットが Richard Delvy
(The Belairs / The Challengers) はいっ、当時の
Los Angeles の音楽ビジネスがはっきりと見えてきますね。
John Marascalco は Little Richard の "Rip It Up"
"Ready Teddy"や "Good Golly Miss Molly"
その他多数のヒット曲を書いてる人で Los Angeles
の音楽業界の親分。彼は Princess Records や
Infinity のオーナーで投資家でもある。
Richard Delvy が作家＆投資家の John Marascalco
と共同出資していたのが Princess Records で、
そこには若き Harry Nilsson や Bobby Hart らが
セッションシンガーとして出入りしていた。
で、作詞を担当した Bobby Jameson は後に
Curt Boettcher とのコラボレイト

ユニットなので同名異バンドと言える。

Darlene McKinney と Josephine Rosborough
によるガールポップデュオ。また彼女達は
Gary Paxton がプロデュースした1964年の
The Fashionettes (GNP Crescendo GNP 322x)
でもある。このシングルは先ず1963年9月に Graybar 201
が Surfers Memories / Surfin' Back To School
でリリースした。その翌月の 1963年10月には
Felsted 45-8689 で A/B面を差し替えて
Surfin' Back To School / Surfers Memories
でリリースしている。恐らくこれは Graybar
の閉鎖に伴う処置だったのだろう。
作者の W. Powell は Wee Willie こと William Powell
彼は当時 Wee Willie & The Pals のグループ名義で
The Pyramids のプロデューサー兼マネージャーで
悪名名高きJohn Hodge と Larry Wilson が出資していた
Cedwicke Records からダンスチューンのシングルを
1枚リリースしている。と言う事は恐らく楽曲の権利も
John Hodge と Larry Wilson が掌握してただろう。
ここで Gary Paxton と John Hodge の接点が
見れる事は興味深い。
恐らく Gary Paxton はその後出会う Gary Usher
に「John Hodge はきな臭い男だ、気をつけろ」と
でもアドヴァイスしたのだろうか（苦笑）
それはさて置き、本件シングルは女の子達の歓声を
配した楽しいロックンロールチューンで短絡的な歌詞
も気にならないストレイトな Dance Craze である。

The Surfettes - Sammy The Sidewalk Surfer
(7: Mustang Records 3001) 1964
このシングルは Ritchie Valens や Sam Cooke
を発掘した事でも知られ Surf Sound 市場の
開拓パイオニアーでもある Del-Fi Records の
オーナー Bob Keane が新たに設立した
Mustang Records の第一弾シングルだ。
Carol Connors の手掛ける多くのユニット作品
の一つだが、ここで Carol Connors-Buzz Cason
のクレジットが多くを物語っている。
The Zip-Codes - Run, Little Mustang (Liberty 55703)
は1964年5月にリリースされているが Carol Connors
が曲を書き、Buzz Cason がプロデュースをして、
Gary Paxton & Buzz Cason がアレンジを担当した。
The Zip-Codes はセッションユニットで、メンバーは
Al Capps, Bob Zwirn, James Burton, Jerry McKenzie,
Leon Russell, Ron Hicklin, Sonny Curtis, Stan Farber
とされているが、本件シングルはそのセッションの
Spin Off だと思われる。
Carol Connors が溌剌と歌うバックで男性のコーラス
が聴こえるが、恐らく Gary Paxton & Buzz Cason
だろうか。このスケートボードソングを Bob Keane が
新興レーベルの第一弾シングルに決定したのが
興味深く、Youth Culture から市場拡大をしようとの
彼の戦略が垣間見れる。

Kathy Brandon - Surfin' Doll

Kathy Brandon は女性シンガーソングライターで
彼女は1962年から1964年までに3枚の
シングルを Crystalette Records からリリース
している。本件シングルは2枚目にあたり
Surfin’ ブーム真っ只中の1963年8月に
リリースされた。アレンジを担当した Don Ralke
は Connie Stevens や Dick And DeeDee 等
多くを手掛け自身のオーケストラも持つ。
Surfin’ theme としては彼はこれが初めてだが
後には The Sunrays も手掛ける事になる。
で、Kathy Brandon だが、当時の Kathy Linden
や Linda Scott のように Teenager song を
好んで書いて歌っており、本件このシングルは
所謂 Surf sound ではなく、ガールポップの
範疇の Surfin’ theme である。
と言う事は、マッチョな Surfer がもてる、
若い女の娘もそんな彼氏が欲しい、といった
当時の青春サーフィン映画の世界観を有する。
それは男目線で言えばハーレム状態間近の
予想さえしてしまう「甘く危険な香り」のする
歌だと思ったらガールポップファンから怒られる
だろうか。うふふ

The Surf Bunnies - Surf City High
(7: Goliath 1353) 1963
この場合 “High” とはハイスクールの事で
敢えて邦題をつけるとしたら
「あれが噂の Surf City 学園！」だろうか。
元々 The Desirays を名乗っていたブロンド娘
Patty Brown, Pat Kent, Donna Schultz の
3人が Surfer らしく髪の毛をブリーチにして
The Surf Bunnies と変名した。彼女達の歌は
全て Gary Paxton のスタジオで録音されてるので
恐らく Gary Paxton が名づけたのだろう。
バックの演奏は全て当時同レーベルに所属してた
The Vulcanes が担当しており、実は彼らは
The Surfaris が "Wipe Out" のヒットで売れっ子
となった時に The Surfaris が未成年だった為に
全国ツアーのメンバーは The Surfaris 本体ではなく
後の The Mar-Kets のツアーユニットとしても
活動する The Vulcanes (Valcanes) が The Surfaris
を名乗ってライブをした。そんな実力派がバックバンド
を務めているのでとても仕上がりが良い。
で、問題はこれだ、アメリカの特に西海岸では
16歳で車の免許が取れる州が多い。
まあそれだから Gary Usher の作る Hot Rod Song
は Teen Pop ファンにも支持されるのだが、本件
「あれが噂の Surf City 学園！」はガキが
カーレースをするわ、サーフィン行くわで、楽しいやら
羨ましいやら、日米の生活の豊かさの違いに
ぶちのめされる一曲となっている。
日本の「ハレンチ学園」とはえらい違いだ（笑）

Susan Lynne - Don’t Drag No More

Artie Kornfeld 自らが書いた Jan & Dean の
“Dead Man's Curve” が1964年2月7日に
リリースされ、その反応に確信を持った
Artie Kornfeld はそのアンサーソング
“Don’t Drag No More” を Susan Lynne に
歌わせて1964年6月15日にリリースするといった
一人マッチポンプ状態になった。バックシンガーは
The Angels または The Angels の Jean Thomas
とセッションシンガー達と言われている。
因みに初期リリースに少数だけピクチャースリーヴ
を付けており、Susan Lynne 自身も持ってなかった
レアアイテムで、そちらは高価な物件である。

The Surfer Girls - Draggin’ Wagon

New York の Staten Island 出身の女性二人による
デュエットで元々は The Durettes と名乗っていた。
Lorraine Bonica (Lead Vocal)
Janice Bartolomeo (Vocals)
で、この Columbia Records との契約時には
プロダクション側はもう一人の女性シンガーを参加
させていて、その女性はブンブンと低い声で歌った。
The Surfer Girls のセッションは1964年2月4日に
行われている。その際、他にもノーザンソウル系の
ガールポップダンサーを録音して The Durettes
とクレジットされたそのマスターテープはお蔵入りに
なっている。The Durettes (SVR Records SVR-P1006)
のスプリットシングル（裏面は他のシンガー）が1966年
にリリースされているがもしかしたら、そこからの
音源だったのかも知れない。
本件は Nick Venet の弟の Steve Venet がプロデュース
を担当したカウンターソングで、Chuck Berry の
“Johnny B. Goode” のリフを引用してるので
ソングライタークレジットに Skip Taylor と共に
Chuck Berry も入った。Skip Taylor は当時
Capitol Records 在籍時の The Vulcanes に
曲を提供しており、後には Canned Heat の
ソングライターとして成功する人物。
1964年3月3日にリリースされたこのシングルは
Al Gorgoni と彼の門下生 Don Thomas が共同で
アレンジをしている。Al Gorgoni は Chip Taylor との
コンビ Just Us が有名だが、セッションミュージシャン
時代に Brill Building で Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil,
Carole King, Gerry Goffin, そして Phil Spector
らと働いており、また The Four Seasons
"Walk Like A Man" や "Big Girls Don't Cry"
The Shangri-Las "Leader of the Pack" 他多くの
ヒット曲の録音に参加している。
Don Thomas はセッションシンガーで The Angels
のバックアップメンバーで Powder Puffsの
中心メンバーだった Jean Thomas の兄で
1962年までは Jean & Don Thomas の兄妹
デュエットでも活動していた。ということはこの録音にも
Jean Thomas が参加してる可能性が高い。

Carol & Cheryl - Go Go G.T.O.
(7: Colpix Records CP-767) 1965
Carol Connors の手掛ける多くのセッションユニット
の中の一つで1965年2月にリリースされてる。
Carol & Cheryl とは Carol Connors (Annette Kleinbard) とその妹
Cheryl Connors (Cheryl Kleinbard) の姉妹である。
作者は連名で Terry Melcher, Steven Barry Lipkin (Berry),
Steve Gorman, Carol Connors とクレジットされており、
Steve Gorman (Steven Gorman とも言う) とは
Dick Dale And His Del-Tones の1964年アルバム Mr. Eliminator で
"Blond In The 406" "My X-KE" の2曲を Carol Connors,
Steve Barri,
Steve Gorman の3人で共作している人物だった。
Berry とクレジットされたのは Jan Berry (Jan & Dean) ではなく
スペルの間違いで Steve Barry (Steven Barry Lipkin) こと
Steve Barri だったのが ASCAP の資料から判明した。
と言う事は1964年の Dick Dale のアルバム製作にあたって
音楽出版社 T.M. Music を設立した Terry Melcher が
Carol Connors へアプローチをかけていた事が推測できる。
Dick Dale のアルバム Mr. Eliminator には T.M. Music
と契約したばかりの Kenny Young が1963年に書いた作家としての
デビュー曲 "50 Miles To Go" が収録されているが、この曲は
1963年9月に City Surfers がリリースした曲のカヴァーだ。
City Surfers メンバーは下記４人。
Bobby Darin (drums), Jim McGuinn (Roger McGuinn. guitar, vocals),
Terry Melcher (vocals, piano), Frank Gari (vocals).
この曲を Terry Melcher が Dick Dale のアルバム Mr. Eliminator へ
売り込んだ際に Carol Connors にも打診してたのだろう。
そこで Dick Dale には不向きな Girl Pop 然としたこの曲を
見つけて音楽出版社 T.M. Music が買い付けたのではなかろうか。
Screen Gems でやれば良い筈のカーディーラーとタイアップが見込まれる
カーソングを、わざわざ外部の T.M. Music の管理下にある曲を使ったのは
1963年の The Rip Chords "Hey Little Cobra" の大ヒットで一躍
時の人となったタイアップ曲の女神とも言える Carol Connors の
曲だったからだ。
Carol & Cheryl は姉妹デュオとされてるがこの姉妹は
1963年までは後に Phil Sloan とソングライターコンビ
を組む Steve Barri とのトリオ The Story Tellers
としてシングルを3枚リリースしていた。
さて前置きが長くなった本件だが、プロデューサーは Colpix Records
のオーナーでテレビシリーズのコンポーザー、
アレンジャーとしても有名な Stu Phillips だ。
そもそもがこのレーベルはコロムビア映画の
俳優やテーマソング他やそれらの Spin Off の
受け皿として1958年に設立されたレーベルで、
1966年からはテレビ音楽部門の Screen Gems
が受け継ぎ Colgems となる。
なので本件作品はポンティアックとのタイアップを
想定して製作されてた感の強いキャッチーでコマーシャルな
サウンドになっている。それを物語るようにホワイトラベルプロモ盤も
3種類存在している。

調子に乗って「Sally」モノを連発で。
先ずは “Surfin’ Sally”
1963年8月にリリースされたこのシングルは
Gold Star Studios で録音されており、
アレンジとコンダクトは Perry Botkin, Jr. が
担当した。彼は The Cascades "Rhythm of the Rain"
や Robin Ward "Wonderful Summer" のような
メロディアスな作風が似合っているが
Surfin’ Craze 真っ只中の1963年には時流に
乗って Round Robin - Do The Slauson や
Les Brown Jr. - Drum's Safari 等 Youth Culture
に触発された作品を手掛け始めている。
ここでは Gold Star Studios 特有の Echo chamber
によって全身で Reverb を浴びてるような
気持ちよさが感じられる。実際 Perry Botkin, Jr.
の後年のインタビューによるとハリウッドの
伝説的な Gold Star Studios を利用すること
を好み、スタジオの完璧なエコーチャンバーに
よって可能になった豊かな Reverb に夢中に
なっていたことを恥ずかしがらずに認めた。

サーフィンサリーに続いてスポーツカーサリー。
美貌を誇るお嬢様シンガーざんすよ。
ガールポップシンガーよりもその後の実業家
や政治家としてのキャリアが有名な
Bernadette Castro のカーテーマソング。
Susan Lynne - Don't Drag No More と同じ
Artie Kornfeld の1964年作品なので
Hot Rod Theme を意識しているのが解る。
Doo-wop 調のバッキングヴォーカルを
配した曲なのでオールディーズファンから
高い支持を受ける曲である。この曲はB面扱い
だが、A面の "His Lips Get In The Way" は
1964年9月26日をピークに全米123位になった。
因みに Bernadette Castro は折り畳み式のベッド等を
販売する Castro Covertibles の令嬢で、4歳の頃から
同社のCMにも登場していた。そして芸能界引退後
しばらくして Castro Convertibles のCEOも務めた。
Colpix には3枚のシングルを残したが、それ以前の
1962年には洗濯機を題材としたダンスナンバー、
“The Slosh”（Beach-5） を残している。しかも
これはピクチャー・スリーヴ付きでも販売された。

1963年3月には Annette がこれにあわせアルバム
Muscle Beach Party (Buena Vista BV/STER 3314)
をリリースした。Gary Usher と Roger Christian は
このアルバムのために新たに Custom City,
Draggin' U.S.A., Rebel Rider, Waikiki, Shut Down Again
の5曲を提供している。アルバムはそこそこのヒットとなり
Custom City / Rebel Rider (Buena Vista 432) と
Muscle Beach Party / I Dream About Frankie
(Buena Vista 433) がシングルカットされた。
Custom City / Rebel Rider のシングルは
続く Muscle Beach Party と連番でプレスされ
アルバムリリースと時期が重なった為にプロモーションも弱く
短期間で回収されているために非常に貴重である。

1965年4月に Gold Star Studios で録音された
このシングルには Brian Wilson の妻 Marilyn Wilson
と Jack Nitzsche の妻 Gracia Nitzsche が参加
している。この二人は優れたセッションシンガーであり
二人のヴォーカルが見事にフューチャーされている。
Marilyn Wilson は当時 The Honeys のメンバーと
しても活動していたので The Honeys がこの慣れた
Gold Star Studios に居ないと考えるほうが無理が
あるので The Honeys の他のメンバーも現場に
いるのだろうと推測される。Gracia Nitzsche は
Sammi Lynn の変名で1961年には Sue Records
からソロデビューしていた。また彼女はすぐに
Phil Spector のセッションシンガーとして Darlene Love
らと行動しており、Hal Blaine & The Young Cougars
のメンバーとしても歌っている。
Herb Alpert, Marshall Leib, Chester Pipkin の
書いたこの曲は Marshall Leib と Jack Nitzsche
によって Bo Diddley の名物 Jungle Beat でアレンジ
されている。実はこのトラックは Gold Star Studios で
録音され同年に9月に A&M Records の子会社
Omen Records でリリースされた
Joe Phillips - I Just Can't Stop Thinking About You
(Omen Records 6) でも流用されており、そちらは
作者が Chester Pipkin 単独で、アレンジと
プロデュースを Chester Pipkin と Marshall Leib が
担当している。Herb Alpert は A&M Records の
オーナーで、自身もミュージシャン活動をしてた。
Marshall Leib は The Teddy Bears / Spectors Three
のメンバーとして Carol Connors, Phil Spector と
活動した後には Phil Spector 流の Wall Of Sound
と似通った Marshall Leib 流の Wall Of Sound を
模索しながらプロデューサー、アレンジャーに転向
していた。黒人の Chester Pipkin は Los Angeles
のセッションシンガー兼ソングライターで多数の
Vocal group 名義の録音に参加している。
彼の兄弟 Gary Pipkin が Philles でシングルをリリースした
The Alley Cats のメンバー兼ソングライターで
1962年の彼らのシングル
Puddin N' Tain (Ask Me Again I'll Tell You The Same) /
Feel So Good (Philles Records 108) はA面が
Jack Nitzsche のアレンジ、Phil Spectorのプロデュース、
B面が Lou Adler のプロデュースだった。
Chester Pipkin は The Alley Cats の母体となった
Billy Storm 率いる The Valiants (Keen Records) や
The Chavelles (Vita Records) のメンバーだったので
当然ながら Gold Star Studios でのセッションには
馴れている。Gold Star Studios の代名詞でもある
Echo chamber の中で、これらの面子が仕事をすれば
誰が聴いても「おっ、これは！」となる。

The Angels の多くの変名リリースの一つで
当然ながら Bassett Hand の手掛ける One Off ユニット
の一つである。Powder Puff とはスラングで
「男子のやるスポーツの、女子部門」という意味だ。
本件はサーフィンをやってる彼氏が Woody
(サーフィンボードを載せるに適した後部が木製に
なってる小型トラックの愛称）に乗ってカーレースに出ようと
する事を思い止まらせようとする女の娘を題材にした歌だ。
この曲はチャートイン出来なかったのだが、オケが幾つか
流用されている。アレンジ＆コンダクトの Bassett Hand が
ミュージシャン名義で Josie Records から
不思議なレコードを1965年にリリースしている。

この “Yoom” という曲はインストルメンタルに女性コーラスが
入るものだが、やはり Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer が
プロデュースした本件のバッキング・トラックそのものだった。
因みにこの曲は The Angels も違うオケを使用して
1964年のアルバム “A Halo To You”
(Smash MGS-27048/SRS-67048) に収録している。

この曲は1958年に The Storey Sisters が
リリースした曲 (Cameo C126) のアップテンポ
カヴァーだ。冒頭に Bike Effects を入れて
1964年にこれをリリースしたという事は
経営悪化が懸念されていた Vee Jay Records
の西海岸部門だった Tollie Records が
West Coast の Youth Culture に参入し
起死回生を狙ったのが垣間見れる。そしてこの
The Angelos は Linda Martell And The Anglos
名義で1962年にシングル1枚 (Fire Records 512)
をリリースしている女性黒人ヴォーカルグループが
発展したグループである。Elvis Presley の最初期在籍
でも有名な Rock & Roll Music の名門
Sun Record Company を設立者の Sam Phillips
から買い上げて勢いに乗る Shelby Singleton の
Plantation Records だが、Linda Martell は1969年に
このレーベルと契約し同年夏には “Color Him Father"
をヒットさせた。また彼女はその際、ナッシュヴィルの
ラジオ局WSM の毎週土曜夜のカントリー・ミュージックの
公開ライブ放送のラジオ番組 "Grand Ole Opry" に
初めて出演した黒人シンガーで、黒人のカントリシンガー
の地位を向上させたパイオニアーでもある。

Duane Eddy - Your Baby’s Gone Surfin’
(7: RCA Victor 47-8214) 1963
Duane Eddy は New York 州 Corning で生まれ、
家族は後に Alizona 州に引っ越した。
高校時代に彼と彼の友人の Jimmy Delbridge は
歌い始めて1年以内に地元のラジオ局 KCKY で
ライブ演奏をした。当時ステーションの DJ だった
Lee Hazlewood は、彼らの唯一のシングルを一緒に
制作し、ワンショットレーベル Eb X. Preston Presents
(Lee Hazlewood のラジオネームにちなんで名付けらた）
でリリースさせた。Lee Hazlewood は地元の歌手
Sanford Clark による “TheFool” をプロデュースし、
別のフェニックス地域のミュージシャンである Al Casey
と彼のバンドによるバックアップをフィーチャーした。
この曲は小さな MCI Records で最初にリリースされ、
その後 Dot Record にライセンス供与されて
1956年9月にトップ10ヒットになった。
この時までに Duane Eddy は高校を卒業し、
フェニックスに移り、レコードの作成にもう一度挑戦した。
1957年11月18日をピークに全米4位の大ヒットに
なった Ernie Freeman - Raunchy の成功により、
ギターベースとサックスベースのロックインストが
さらに求められるようになった。リスナーの興味を
引くサウンドを考え出した Lee Hazlewood は
Sid Manker が “Raunchy” で行ったように
Duane Eddy に低音を使用したリードギターを
演奏することを提案した。Duane Eddy は弦を曲げる
ことで個性的なサウンドを演奏し、Lee Hazlewood は
それを Twangy guitar と呼んで喜んだ。
Duane Eddy と Lee Hazlewood が書いた
“Moovin' n' Groovin'” を Dot Records にオファー
したが、同レーベルのボス Randy Wood は
「グランドキャニオンを渡って配線された電話線の
故障で誰かが電話をかけようとしているように聞こえた」
と述べて、あまり興味を示さなかった。
Lee Hazlewood と彼の新しいパートナー Lester Sill
は売込みを続けて Philadelphia の Jamie Records
が買い取り、この曲は Jamie Records からリリースされ
1958年3月17日をピークに全米72位のマイナーヒット
となり、Jamie Records はさらに曲を Duane Eddy と
Lee Hazlewood に求めた。これを期に Al Casey は
Duane Eddy のバックバンド The Rebels を結成する。

チェンジがされた。Al Casey だけがオリジナル
メンバーとして残り、Sax player の Jim Horn や
Keyboardist の Larry Knechtel らが参加した。
間もなくして Lee Hazlewood と Lester Sillは、
1961年の初め頃に他のプロジェクトに取り組むために
Duane Eddy から離れて Lester Sill は Phil Spector
と Philles Records を設立、Steve Douglas も
Phil Spector のお抱えミュージシャンとなった。
この期間中、ヒット曲を手に入れるのが難しくなった
Duane Eddy は1962年の初めに RCA Victor へ
移籍した。この移籍は Duane Eddy のキャリアーを

Tip Records は California 州 Hollywood の
弱小レーベルで一時期 Bob & Earl も所属していた。
不思議な事にこの曲は作者クレジットがないが
Don 'Sugarcane' Harris と Dewey Terry Jr. の
Don & Dewey が作者らしい。曲調も彼らが書いて
The Olympics がヒットさせた "Big Boy Pete" に
そっくりで、楽曲の管理が若き David Gates も
関与してた Dragonwyck Music となっており
ワンヒットワンダーだけにいまだコレクター達の
研究材料となっている。当然ながら噂され続けている
The Wildcats や Hal Blaine & The Young Cougars 等
と同様に Darlene Love and The Blossoms の
一連の変名リリースの一つではないかというのも
いまだ完全否定はされていない。

このダンスチューンを聴けば解るように、この曲は
Arthur Conley - Ha! Ha! Ha! (1967年) の元ネタだ。
ソングライターとプロデューサーでクレジットされてる
Steve Verroca は 1964年に
The Robins - Lucy Watusi (Musicor MU 1050)
でもダンスチューンを書いてプロデュースを
していたので Dance Movement の終焉期を
当時感じていたのでなかろうか。
また本件と同じ1965年9月には女優で
モデルの Linda Gray がリリースしたシングル
The Sea Took Him Away (Karate 45-513)
と言うまるで "Leader Of The Pack" の
Surfin' song version といった趣の素晴らしい
Death Song ガールポップを書いてプロデュースも
担当した。(Linda Gray は後に CBS のテレビドラマ
“Dallas” で Sue Ellen を演じた)
Steve Verroca はある意味才能があるのだがヒット
に恵まれない日々を過ごしていたように思える。
そんな彼だが後に Link Wray のアルバムを
プロデュースし、彼は Link Wray のアルバム
"Beans and Fatback" のデモテープを盗み、
Virgin Records に売却したとされている。
Link Wray は Virgin の1975年アルバム
"Stuck in Gear"（Virgin V2050）を録音したので、
すでに1972年にリリースされていた
"Beans and Fatback" を回収した。

Rachel and the Revolvers - The Revo-lution

デリケートな Brian Wilson は、The Beach Boys の
成功の後も「自分には才能がないのではないか？」と
言ってふさぎ込んでしまう事も多かったが、Gary Usher は
そんな Brian Wilson に当時ヒット曲を連発していた
Gerry Goffin & Carole King の事を話し「俺たちには
才能があるんだ、俺たちはカリフォルニアの Goffin & King
になるんだ」と言って励まし初期の The Beach Boys と
Brian Wilson を支えていったのだった。
ちょうどその頃 Cameo-Parkway Records から一連の
ダンスナンバー Twist, Mashed Potatoes らがリリースされ、
まさにダンスソングが全米で大流行していた。
Brian Wilson は Gary Usher から聞いた Goffin & King に
興味を持ち、当時大ヒットしていた Goffin & King 作の
"The Loco-Motion" が彼らのベイビーシッターをしていた
Little Eva (Eva Boyd) という黒人の少女が歌っている事を知った。
Brian Wilson はこれに触発され "The Loco-Motion" に似た曲を
Gary Usher と書き上げた。すると Brian Wilson は Gary Usher
に「自分たちも歌える黒人をスカウトしよう」とロスアンゼルスの
黒人居住区 Watts に Gary Usher の車で出かけようともちかけた。
Gary Usher は「そんな黒人街に行ったら殺されてしまう」と言って
反対したが Brian Wilson は忠告を聞き入れず、
結局 Gary Usher も渋々とついていった。ある夜二人は
Watts 地区に入り幾つかのナイトクラブに入り、黒人達に
「誰か歌える黒人女性を知らない？」と尋ねてみた。
そして一人教えてもらう度にその住所に訪ねて行った。
ドアをノックし「我々はレコードをリリースしてチャートインしたんだ」
と自己紹介をしてみた。馬鹿げた行為だが、黒人がサーフィンの
ヒット曲を知ってる訳もなく、ましてや生活習慣から聴いている
ラジオも違うのに突然二人の白人の若者が黒人居住区に現れて
このようなスタンスで自己紹介をしたのだ。それでも二人は
こう続けるしかなかった「我々は貴方のお嬢さんが歌えると聴いた。
我々はお嬢さんの歌をレコードに出来るんです」と、こんな交渉
を幾つか繰り返しながらも二人は無事に殺されることもなく
Betty という名の黒人女性にコンタクトをとって帰ってくる。
この女性の本名を明かさない条件でリードヴォーカルに参加させ
レコーディングされたのが "The Revo-Lution" と"Number Nine"
の2曲だ。"The Revo-Lution" は The Marvelettes の
“Please Mr. Postman” のフレーズを引用しており、黒人女性が
歌うダンスチューンを強く意識している。実は後年になって Gary Usher
と Brian Wilson によって明らかにされたが、この女性は若き日の
Betty Willis だったのだ。マスターを完成させた二人は喜んだ。
父親 Murry の息のかからない所でレコーディングを完成したのだ。
その後二人は Buckeye Record Distributors に務めるレコード
ディストリビューターで The Beach Boys の名付け親でもある
Russ Regan にこの "The Revo-Lution" の楽曲管理の権利を
持ちかけ契約を成立させている。当時 Dot Records の
プロモーションを手掛けていた Russ Regan の勧めもあり
Rachel and The Revolvers 名義でこのシングルは1962年9月に
Dot Records からリリースされた。この歌は Russ Regan の
所有する Algrace 音楽出版で管理されている
当時21歳だった Betty Willis は1960年代初頭、カリフォルニア州
サンタアナとオレンジカウンティのさまざまなクラブで歌い始めた。
1962年、彼女は Ray Lockhart とのデュエット Betty & Ray として
を Rendezvous Records で Turn Your Love Lights On /
You're Too Much をリリース、その後、1962年に Take Your Heart
というタイトルのソロシングルをリリースした。また彼女は The Instants
としてクレジットされたスタジオグループのリードボーカルとして
2枚のシングルを同レーベルでリリースしている。
彼女は時折隣人である Bill Medley （後に The Righteous Brothers
の低い声になった）とさまざまな地元のクラブで歌った。
The Righteous Brothers が Moonglow Records と契約
している間、Betty Willis と Bill Medley は彼の曲の1つである
My Tears Will Go Away のデュエットを録音したがこれは
リリースに至っていない。Betty Willis は最終的に Wrecking Crew
のピアニストである Leon Russell と行動を共にし、1965年に
Leon Russell は Philles Records の子会社である Phi-Dan Records
から Betty Willis - Act naturally / Soul (Phi-Dan 5001)

Donna Loren - Muscle Bustle

1964年3月6日には Donna Loren も
映画 "Muscle Beach Party" で歌った "Muscle Bustle"
をシングルで発売しているが、これは改めて
レコーディングしたものだった。彼女は元々キュートな
ガールポップシンガーだった。ボストン出身の彼女は
１０歳の時にテレビショー The Mickey Mouse Club の
メンバーとしてデビューしているが番組内の格上グループ
Mouseketeer に所属していた５歳年上の Annette を
ライヴァル視しているので正反対のヴァージョンで対抗
させようと周囲がさせていたようでもある。
通常女性アイドル歌手はプロダクションの商品の一部として
可愛く歌っていれば無難であるが、美人で自己顕示欲の
強い Donna Loren は「目だってナンボ」とばかりに
パンチの効いた（死語）ヴォーカルで押し込んでくる。
Annette は舌ったらずのキュートなガールポップヴァージョンで
Donna Loren のヴァージョンはアップテンポにして
パワフルなヴォーカルで弾けたダイナミックダンサーで歌われる。
この曲も Gary Usher と Roger Christian、Brian Wilson
の3人で書かれた。余談だが Donna Loren は
1968年に当時 Reprise のA&R、そして後に Warner Bros.の
社長になる Lenny Waronker と結婚し1986年に離婚。
そして Phil Sloan 率いる The Fantastic Baggys のアルバム用
フォトセッションに参加している右端の男 Jerry Cargman
(Jered Cargman) は Phil Sloan の高校時代のクラスメイト
だが1995年に Donna Loren と結婚し、この夫婦は
現在ハワイで ADASAというジュエリーショップを経営してる。

Gary Usher が音楽を担当した映画 "Muscle Beach Party"
が封切りされた。これは Annette と Frankie Avalon が
出演した "Beach Party" の続編で映画には Dick Dale,
Donna Loren, Stevie Wonder らも出演している。
因みに Muscle Beach とは Vennis Beach の俗称で、
同地では筋肉自慢のコンテストが頻繁に行われている
事から、そう呼ばれている。前作 "Beach Party" に
続き音楽を依頼された Gary Usher は Roger Christian
と話し合った末に、Brian Wilson にも協力を要請している。
本作は Gary Usher、Roger Christian、 Brian Wilson
が共作し、3人がこの映画のために書いた曲だ。
作者の3人の個性が表れている "Muscle Beach Party"
だが、この曲調は The Beach Boys の
"Cherry, Cherry Coupe" (原曲 Land Ahoy) から、
その後 The Surper Stocks の "Surf Route 101" や
"Malibu Blues" にも通低する、のどかな主旋律を持つ。

The Sea Shells - Love Those Beach Boys

このグループは The Surf Bunnies の解散後に
メンバーだった Pat Kent が参加したユニットで曲は
The Beach Boys の “Be True To Your School”
のメロディーをメインに The Beach Boys 名曲群
を歌詞で取り上げる Tribute song style となっている。
The Surf Bunnies と同様に Gary Paxton
のスタジオで録音されてるのでバックの演奏は
そのまんま The Vulcanes が演奏しているのが解る。
プロデュースも同じく Bobb Todd と Tony Butala
が担当しているので同じセッションで行われたようである。
Capitol Records の The Duncan Brothers
こと Lanny Duncan と Robert Duncan が
ソングライタークレジットされており、彼らは
The Routers - Let's Go (Pony) の作者として有名で、
1965年には Lanny Duncan With The Gentry's -
It Shouldn't Happen To A Dog / Sweet One
(Goliath 1359) をリリースしている。
Lanny Duncan は元々 Candix で1960年に
シンガーデビューした時から Goliath レーベルの
オーナー Tony Butala & Bob Todd との接点が
あったらしい。レーベル名 Goliath は旧約聖書
の「サムエル記」に登場するペリシテ人の巨人兵士。
英語発音でゴライアスと言う。

Carol Connors And The Cycles - Yum Yum Yamaha

本件シングルはプロモーション用に配布されたもので
片面しか収録されていない One-sided Single だ。
The Spats は4枚目のシングルで “Go Go Yamaha”
を1965年8月にリリースした。Yamaha Bike の
ジングル曲として売り込んだ曲だが、Yamaha は
当時気乗りではなかった為に彼らのプロモーション撮影は
されたがヒットはしていない。残念ながら Yamaha が
興味を持ってたのは Carol Conners - Yum Yum Yamaha
だったというから運が悪い。片面シングルがプロモーション
用に制作され、アメリカの Yamaha dealer と
ラジオ局に配布された。Carol Connors 得意の
タイアップ路線も自分の声がコマーシャルな
価値があると解ってたのだろう。
アメリカの Yamaha のスピリットの無さを
感じるが、所詮商品のプロモーションとはキャッチーで
魅力的である事が最大の必要条件なのだろう。
その意味においては男性グループが束になっても
笑顔の娘一人に勝てやしないって事か。

彼女達はバックアップシンガーズとしても活動し

作者とプロデュースに Billy Mure (Aka Super Sonic Guitar)
がクレジットされてるのでバックは彼のグループだろう。
ポピュラーミュージックがジャズと密接な関係が
あった時代を経験して、その後 R&R movement 経由
でダンスミュージックがアップテンポ化してもなお
高級車は世のステイタスシンボルとして居続けていた。
それは大人の世界の話で、これが The Beach Boys や
Gary Usher がシーンに新たな価値観を吹き込んで
からはティーンが欲しがる中古車のカスタマイズカー、
チューニングカー、所謂改造車がテーマとなり
カーテーマソングは新たな局面を迎える事になった。
因みに Peggy Santiglia は、このグループ解散後に
The Angels のリードとして迎えられることになる。

Andrea Carroll - Hey Beach Boy

Ohio 州 Cleveland 出身の女優、シンガー。
本名を Andrea Lee DeCapite と言う。
彼女は3歳の時に地元テレビ局で放映されていた
The Gene Carroll Show に出演していた。
その際 Gene Carroll の名を用いて Andrea Carroll
という芸名になり、番組のレギュラーとなった。
歌手としてのデビューは Epic と契約し
“Young and Lonely" 1961年,
続く "Please Don't Talk to the Lifeguard"
が地元でローカルヒットとなった。
その後 The Tokens の Bright Tunes Productions
と契約した彼女は Big Top に移籍して
16歳の時に "It Hurts To Be Sixteen" をリリース、
1963年7月20日をピークに全米45位の
スマッシュヒットとなり、これが彼女の唯一の
ヒット曲となった。この歌は Neil Sedaka の
ヒット曲 "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen"
に対するアンサーソングで、クレジットは
されてないが The Chiffons がバックを務めていた。
作者は Ronnie Grossman とクレジットされてるが
Ronnie とは Neil Sedaka の姉で、Eddie Grossman と
Ronnie が結婚してこの性になった。
Neil Sedaka はライターとしてアルドンと契約していた
のだが、売れるにしたがってその報酬やシステムに
不満を持つようになり、いくつかの曲をこの姉の名前を使った
Ronnie Grossman の変名で書いたと言われている。
なのでこの名義の曲（他にもいくつか存在している）は
アルドンでない別の出版社に登録されている。
その後も同じようなプロダクションでフォローアップ
をリリースするがヒットに恵まれず、彼女は1965年に
RCA Victor に移籍し、1966年には United Artists Records
に移籍して本件シングルをリリースする。
作曲は後に自身のプロジェクト The Astral Projection
でも知られる Lor Crane, 作詞は James Darren や
Patty Duke 他のティーン系も手掛けた Bernice Ross
が担当した。プロデュースは The G-Clefs の育ての親
Jack Gold, アレンジはオーケストラコンダクターで
The Crystals - Oh Yeah, Maybe Baby (Philles Records 100)
のアレンジをした Arnold Goland が担当している。
しかしもはや Surfin' movement も消え去って
ベトナム戦争悪化と徴兵制度に苦しむ若者が
愛と自由を訴えヒッピー化する1966年である。
そんな状況下で "Hey Beach Boy" である、
どこの男が振り返るだろうか（笑）
なお我が国では彼女のヒット曲 "It Hurts To Be Sixteen"
（邦題: なみだの16才) がシングルリリースされたのだが、クレジットは
アンドリア・キャロルとされてるのが微笑ましい。
しかし、16のハートマーク、ハートの輪郭に片眉毛の顔といい
この奇妙なジャケットじゃあアンドリアが可愛そうだ (爆)
