Little Pattie & The Statesmen - Surfin' Time Again

Patricia Amphlett は1949年にオーストラリアの
ニューサウスウェールズ州パディントンで生まれた。
Sydney Girls High School 時代に Patricia という
背の高い友人が二人いたので彼女は Little Pattie
というニックネームが付けられた。
彼女は13歳のときに最初にテレビに出演し、
Opportunity Knocks シリーズで歌い、
高校3年生のとき彼女は毎週 The Bronte Surf Club
で演奏する The Statesmen のリードシンガーとして
活動を始めた。グループは彼女のヴォーカルに
感銘を受け、EMIとのレコーディング契約を結んだ。
1963年11月の彼女のデビューシングルとなった
"He's My Blonde Headed, Stompie Wompie,
Real Gone Surfer Boy"は、シドニーで2位の
大ヒットとなり、彼女はバンドスタンドを含むテレビの
バラエティ番組に定期的に出演し、オーストラリアの人気
Surf band の Col Joye and The Joy Boys のツアーを
サポートした。その後、彼女はベトナム戦争中に
オーストラリア兵士の慰問ライヴでベトナムへ行き、
その際日本に立ち寄って日本のテレビ番組に出演し、
1965年には日本でもレコーディングをしている。
本件シングルは敢えてデビューシングルではなく
オーストラリア兵士の慰問ライヴでベトナムへ行く前の
彼女の Surfin’ Pop のラストスパートとなる
シングルを選出している。Little Pattie は意図的にか
オーストラリア訛りで Surfin’ を「ソーフィン」と歌って
おり、これを聴かされるオーストラリア兵はエキサイト
するだろう。それ故にこの録音はまるで彼女の歌声と
The Statesmen の演奏によって戦地にエネルギッシュ
な夏を持って行けるかを彼らが再確認をしてるかの
ようでもある。波の効果音も荒々しくてかっこいい。

The Surf Bunnies - Surf Bunny Beach

元々 The Desirays を名乗っていたブロンド娘
Patty Brown, Pat Kent, Donna Schultz の
3人が Surfer らしく髪の毛をブリーチにして
The Surf Bunnies と変名した。彼女達の歌は
全て Gary Paxton のスタジオで録音されてるので
恐らく Gary Paxton が名づけたのだろう。
バックの演奏は全て当時同レーベルに所属してた
The Vulcanes が担当しており、実は彼らは
The Surfaris が "Wipe Out" のヒットで売れっ子
となった時にThe Surfaris が未成年だった為に
全国ツアーのメンバーは The Surfaris 本体ではなく
後の The Mar-Kets のツアーユニットとしても
活動する The Vulcanes (Valcanes) が The Surfaris
を名乗ってライブをした。そんな実力派がバックバンド
を務めているのでとても仕上がりが良い。
The Surf Bunnies のマネージャーで初期 Bobby Hart
とライターコンビを組んでいた Barry Richards,
The Lettermen メンバーでレーベルオーナーの
Tony Butala & Bob Todd の3人が連名で
ソングライタークレジットされており、プロデュースは
Bob Todd-Tony Butala が担当している。
レーベル名 Goliath は旧約聖書の「サムエル記」に
登場するペリシテ人の巨人兵士。
英語発音でゴライアスと言う。Hollywood の
North Vine Street に設立された同レーベルは
Tonto Music という楽曲出版社も合わせて設立した。
因みに本件シングルは同年 Dot Records に
買い上げられ、Dot Records 45-16523 として
全国配給された際にはA面と B面を逆にされた。

California 州 Orange County の町 Fullerton で
結成された少女4人によるガレージサイケバンド。
彼女達は元々高校時代に The Ladybirds として
結成し、Los Angeles エリアの幾つかの
テレビショーに出演して人気を博していた。
The Daisy Chain と名を変えた彼女達は
United International と契約し彼女達のアルバム
"Straight Or Lame" は1967年に録音していたが
リリースは1968年にされた。

本件シングルはアルバムリリース後に人知れず
リリースされており、両面ともかなりぶっ飛んだ
アレンジがされたサイケデリックポップになっている。
A面 “It's My World” が万華鏡サイケアレンジで
本件 “Beach Ball” は白昼夢サイケアレンジと
言ったとこか。Beach Effects で幕を開け
キュートな女性の Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba スキャットで始まる。
リードヴォーカルは可愛らしさと他人を見下す
Snob 感が見事に共存している。それは例えるなら
まるで Russ Meyers 監督のカルトムーヴィー
"Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls"から
Spin Off してきたかのような世界観を持っている。
サイケフラワームーヴメント期の女性達が
ビーチで騒ぐ日常を、白昼夢感覚で音像化
したようなトリッピーなアレンジになっており
アルバム未収曲という事もあり人気が高い。
因みに、このグループは商業的に成功は
しなかったが Shel Le (Shele Pinizzotto) と
Rosemary Lane (Rosemary Butler) の二人はその後
すぐに女性ロックバンド Birtha を結成し、1972年と
1973年には Dunhill Records から2枚の
アルバムをリリースした。1975年に Birtha が解散すると
Rosemary Lane (Rosemary Butler) はセッションシンガー
として活動を始め Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor,
Warren Zevon, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs,
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jackson Browne ら多くの
バックアップシンガーを務めた。そして1982年に
角川映画「汚れた英雄」の主題歌を歌い、遂に彼女は
ソロシンガーとしてブレイクした。

Debra Swisher - You're So Good To Me

Debra Swisher は、The Pixies Three の結成当初
からのオリジナル・メンバーで、グループが解散した
1965年まで在籍していた。当初はリードではなく
ハイ・パートを歌っていたが、後にリードを担当する。
1965年のグループ解散後にはソロとなり
1966年に ABC Paramount レコード傘下の Boom より、
この The Beach Boys のカヴァーをフリーキーな
ガレージ・パンクアレンジでリリース。このレコードを
プロデュース、アレンジしたのが、The Angelsで有名な
Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer (Bassett Hand)
のトリオだった。彼女はその後の1967年には、
The Angels の当時のメンバーである Toni Mason が
抜けたため、代わりに The Angels に加入した。
ちなみに “You're So Good To Me” のB面、
”Thank You And Good Night” は、かつて The Angels
が Smash Records 時代にリリースした曲のリメイクだ。

Alison Wonder - Once More With Feeling

イギリスきってのソングライターコンビ
Roger Cook-Roger Greenaway の作品だが
まるでパロディーかと思うほど The Beach Boys
の名曲 “Don’t Worry Baby” に寄せてきている。
Peter and Gordon や Manfred Mann の曲でも
有名な John Burgess がプロデュースを
担当してるので「してやったり！」といった感じで
製作されたのだろうが、ヒットに至っていない。
名前が Alison Wonder だけに、まったくもって
不思議な一枚である（苦笑）

Shelley Fabares - Lost Summer Love

人気の美人女優 Shelley Fabares が歌う
可愛らしくもセンチなサマーソング。
ソングライターは Mark Barkan-Dolores Fuller
とクレジットされており、Mark Barkan は奇妙な事に
ミュージシャンとして Rusty Evans （Marcus Uzilevsk）
のサイケデリックユニット The Deep のメンバー
だった人物で、作曲家としては Lesley Gore,
Manfred Mann, Connie Francis, The Archies,
The Monkees 等多くに提供した。
作詞を担当したのは女優、ソングライター、
レーベルオーナーの美女 Dolores Fuller が
担当している。彼女を最も有名にさせたのは
映画女優時代ではなく、Elvis Presley の一連の
映画曲の歌詞を書いた事だろう。
Elvis Presley と映画 Blue Hawaii で共演したかった
Dolores Fuller は Hill & Range に連絡をとった。
そこで後にコンビを組む Ben Weisman に出会い、
勧められて "Rock-A-Hula Baby" の歌詞を書いた。
それがきっかけとなり彼女が作詞した "I Got Lucky"
や "Spinout" 他を Elvis Presley が録音するに至った。
また Dolores Fuller は若き Johnny Rivers や
Tanya Tucker を売り込む為に自らがオーナーとなり
Dee Dee Records を1950年代後半に設立した
ビジネスマンでもある。そんな売れっ子ソングライター達
が人気女優の Shelley Fabares に食いついてきた。
プロデューサーの Lou Adler は子飼いの Jan & Dean
の同名曲でコロムビアピクチャーズによって映画化
された “Ride the Wild Surf” (撮影は1963年、
公開が1964年8月5日) に出演してた女優
Shelley Fabares と急接近し、1964年6月に二人は
結婚した。アレンジ＆コンダクターは当時 Lou Adler
の下で修行中だった若きソングライターコンビ
Phil Sloan-Steve Barriである。Shelley Fabares は
女優として Elvis Presley と下記3本を共演する
「フロリダ万才（Girl Happy）」（1965年）
「カリフォルニア万才（Spinout）」（1966年）
「ブルー・マイアミ（Clambake）」（1967年）
Elvis Presley を絶対的なアイドルとする Phil Sloan
からすれば夢のような作業だった事だろう。
1964年11月にリリースされた新妻 Shelley Fabares
が唯一 Vee Jay Records に残したのが本件シングルだ。
Chicago 生まれの Lou Adler は Vee Jay Records
にもコンタクトを持っており、黒人オーナーで R&B
専門のレーベルだった Vee Jay Records が
Four Seasons の移籍によって新たな分野を開拓し
始めていた計画を知る。Lou Adler が Shelley Fabares
を Screen Gems 系の Colpix から Vee Jay Records
に短期間移籍させたのは自身が設立した
Dunhill Production の配給契約を目論む Lou Adler の
計画であった。そのような経緯なら普通に考えて妻の
シングルをヒットさせようと努力するだろう。
しかし Lou Adler は将来自身のレーベル設立のために
妻の Shelley Fabares を Vee Jay Records
でヒットさせないようプロモーションをコントロールしている。
何故なら Vee Jay Records は西海岸でのセールスを
強化するために子会社 Tolie Records を California
に設立したのだが、これが既に経営難に陥っていた
Vee Jay Records の権利売却の為だった事を
Lou Adler は知っていたのだ。事実 Shelley Fabares
のためにどんな優秀なソングライター達が曲を書こうが、
彼女のヒット曲は Colpix 時代だけである。

1964年10月に録音されたこのシングルだが
射出成形の青い初期ラベルと紙の白地のラベル
の2種が確認されている。
The Beach Girls は The Rag Dolls の変名であり
1965年2月にリリースされたがヒットしなかった。

Jeanne Fox (Rainy Day)
これら多くの変名でリリースしている。
この曲は Sandy Linzer-Denny Randell のコンビが
書いて、アレンジ＆コンダクトを Charlie Calello が
担当した言わば Bob Crewe のプロダクションによる
Surfin’ counter song である。
で、問題はこの曲が１年後にアメリカの男性グループ
The Invitations によってブラックソウルスタイルで
再録音され Dynovoice Records 215 （Dynovoxの別名）
でリリースされたことだ。これがノーザンソウルなので
オリジナルヴァージョンの The Beach Girls が
中古市場でにわか注目されてしまった。
ガールポップの宿命とでも言うか、60s のガールグループ
のダンスチューンはノーザンソウル市場に食い荒らされる。
因みに Beach Girls - He's My Surfin' Guy (Vault V-905)
は同名異グループである。

Carol Connors - Swingin' Summer

A Swingin 'Summer は、Raquel Welch を主役にした
ビーチパーティースタイルのコメディー映画で
1965年夏に公開された。この映画には
The Rip Chords, Gary Lewis & The Playboys,
Donnie Brooks, The Righteous Brothers が
特別出演しており、それらの曲を収録した
サウンドトラックアルバムを Hanna Barbera Records
がリリースした。そこに収録されたタイトルトラックが
本件 Carol Connors - Swingin' Summer である。
これもタイアップの大好きな彼女のお仕事の
一つで、マニア人気が高い隠れた逸品である。

Carol & Cheryl - Sunny Winter

夏テーマも歌えば、冬テーマでも歌います。
Carol Connors と Cheryl Gorman だが Carol Connors
の妹で Carol & Cheryl は姉妹デュオとされてる。
これも Carol Connors の手掛ける多くのセッションユニット
の中の一つで1965年2月にリリースされてる。
Carol & Cheryl - Go Go G. T. O. のB面だが
珍しく他人が書いた曲である。
作者は Chip Taylor & Ted Daryll がクレジットされてる。
Just Us でも有名な Al Gorgoni の盟友 Chip Taylor
が作曲、Salt Water Taffy をヒットさせる以前に Rod McBrien
と The Eastern Scene を結成していた Ted Daryll が
作詞を担当してるので、B面曲は「冬」テーマだけに
ニューヨークのプロダクションからオファーがあったのだろうか。
プロデューサーは Colpix Records のオーナーで
テレビシリーズのコンポーザー、アレンジャーと
しても有名な Stu Phillips だ。
そもそもがこのレーベルはコロムビア映画の
俳優やテーマソング他やそれらの Spin Off の
受け皿として1958年に設立されたレーベルで、
1966年からはテレビ音楽部門の Screen Gems
が受け継ぎ Colgems となる。
なので本件作品は映画の挿入歌を想定してたのか
ハーモニックなヴォーカルによる美しいバラード
として仕上げている。Gold Star Studios 特有の
深いエコーが心地よい。

まるで Wendy & Bonnie をも思わせるような
愁いを帯びたサマーサウンドだ。
彼女達は Georgia 州 Atlanta 出身で
当初は The Gentle Touch (Kapp/Doppler) として
活動していた Sue Nunn & Patricia Nunn (Patty Nunn) の
姉妹だ。だから必然的に Wendy & Bonnie
のようなサウンドになる。
しかも二人が書いたオリジナル曲なのでバッチグーッ（死語）
アレンジ、コンダクトを担当した Emory Gordy も
Atlanta 出身のセッションベーシストで、彼は後に
Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris らの
録音やツアーメンバーとして参加する。
Billy Jackson, Tom Wells の共同プロデュースに
なってるが Tom Wells は The Gentle Touch 時代
からの引き続きなので、やはり Atlanta 出身なのだろう。
話によると彼女達はレコード契約終了後も地元で
数年活動しており、その際には Atlanta Rhythm Section
と番組出演したり、彼らの録音をサポートしたと言う。

このシングルには Brian Wilson の妻 Marilyn Wilson
と Jack Nitzsche の妻 Gracia Nitzsche が参加
している。この二人は優れたセッションシンガーであり
二人の美麗ヴォーカルが見事にフューチャーされている。
Marilyn Wilson は当時 The Honeys のメンバーと
しても活動していたので The Honeys がこの慣れた
Gold Star Studios に居ないと考えるほうが無理が
あるので The Honeys の他のメンバーも現場には
いるのだろうと推測される。Gracia Nitzsche は
Sammi Lynn の変名で1961年には Sue Records
からソロデビューしていた。また彼女はすぐに
Phil Spector のセッションシンガーとして Darlene Love
らと行動しており、Hal Blaine & The Young Cougars
他のシンガー、The Blossoms のメンバーとしても歌っている。
曲は Guy Hemrick, Jerry Howard Steiner & Jack Keller
の連名で書かれており、Aldon Music 創成期以来の
ソングライターである Jack Keller が書いているので
Screen Gems-Columbia Music Inc. が出版社として
クレジットされている。Guy Hemrick & Jerry Steiner
のコンビは当時 Frankie Avalon や Annette が
出演する American International Pictures (AIP)
の Beach Movie に曲を書いていたソングライター
コンビだった。この曲は1965年2月6日ピークに
全米32位のスマッシュヒットになった The Trade Winds
の名曲 “New York's A Lonely Town” に対する
アンサーソングで Wrecking Crew をバックに
1965年4月に Gold Star Studios で録音された。
Marshall Leib と Jack Nitzsche がアレンジを担当。
Marshall Leib は The Teddy Bears / Spectors Three
のメンバーとして Carol Connors, Phil Spector と
活動した後には Phil Spector 流の Wall Of Sound
と似通った Marshall Leib 流の Wall Of Sound を
模索しながらプロデューサー、アレンジャーに転向
していた。Marshall Leib と Jack Nitzsche の二人も
歌い手の Gracia Nitzsche も Marilyn Wilson も
演奏する Wrecking Crew も Gold Star Studios
セッションの申し子のようなもので、どれだけの時間を
このスタジオで過ごしたのだろうか、というほど
馴れた職場である。そう、そこに Phil Spector が
いないだけなのだ。このシングルは Gold Star Studios
の代名詞でもある Echo chamber の中で、答えの
導き方を知り尽くしてるプロフェッショナル達が作った
隠れた名作だ。

Jill Gibson - It's As Easy As 1, 2, 3

Jill Gibson はイギリス人とアメリカ人のハーフで、
Los Angeles の University High School で
1959年に Jan & Dean の Jan Berry と出会い、
彼と7年間ガールフレンドとして交際を始めた。
そして高校卒業後にモデルをしていた Jill Gibson は
Jan & Dean のレコーディングに参加するようになる。
1962年、Jan Berry は “Jan & Dean に対する女性の回答”
と言う触れ込みで Judy & Jill を結成することを決定した。
これは Dean Torrence の当時のガールフレンド
Judy Lovejoy と Jill Gibson のユニットだった。
Jan Berry がプロデュースを担当し
"Come On Baby" (written by Jill Gibson and Judy Lovejoy)
"Eleventh Minute" (written by Jill Gibson and Don Altfeld)
"Just For Tonight", "Baby What's It Gonna Be"
がデモ録音されて、Liberty Records に提出された。
Jill Gibson はこれらの未発表のデモ曲の殆どで
リードヴォーカルをしている。しかし Judy & Jill の
セッションは大きな発展をすることもなくお蔵入りになった。
その間、Jill Gibson はカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校で
視覚芸術を学びながら Jan & Dean の幾つかの曲でも
バックシンガーとして歌っていた。
本件シングルと同じトラックに The Blossoms の
バックヴォーカルを被せて Jill Gibson は Jan Berry と
"It's As Easy As 1, 2, 3" をデュエットで歌っているが
Jill Gibson はクレジットされず Jan & Dean 名義で
1965年4月に "You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy"
(Liberty 55792) のB面としてシングルリリースされたが、
歌詞が若干異なる。(アルバムでは Jan & Dean -
Dead Man's Curve / The New Girl In School に収録された)
A面の "You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy" は
Roger Christian-Jan Berry-Jill Gibson の共作で、
そちらは1965年5月22日をピークに全米27位の
スマッシュヒットを記録した。
本件は Jill Gibson が当時公式にリリースした唯一の
シングルだ。Jan & Dean "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)"
他幾つかの曲を提供している Don Altfeld とJill Gibson が
共作したこの曲は1964年3月に Western Recorders で録音され、
ヴォーカルトラックは1964年10月に録音された。
そして1964年11月にリリースされている。
その際B面に収録された "Jilly's Flip Side" は
Phil Sloan-Steve Barri が書いた曲
"(When You're Near) You're So Far Away" の
インストルメンタルトラックに木琴のオーバーダブを
使用したチューンだった。
Jill Gibson が1966年に Jan & Dean の最後の
スタジオアルバムである Jan & Dean Meet Batman で
ヴォーカルを歌うまでに、Jan Berry と彼女の個人的な関係は
終わりを告げていた。彼らはアルバムの1966年3月の
リリースまでに別々の道を進んでいたが、友達のままだった。
その直後、Jan Berry は1966年4月12日に重大な
自動車事故に巻き込まれ、生き残った。Jill Gibson は
彼の長く困難な回復の間にしばしば病院を訪れた。
後に Jill Gibson は Jan & Dean の生みの親で
1959年から彼らのマネージャーを務めていた Lou Adler
とデートした。その当時 Lou Adler は妻で女優、歌手の
Shelley Fabares と別居中だったのだ。間もなくして二人は
交際を開始し始めた。Lou Adler が設立した Dunhill Records
の売れっ子となった The Mama's and the Papas だが、
彼らがグループ結成前から中心メンバーの John Phillips と
Michelle Gilliam こと Michelle Phillips は結婚していた。
しかしグループ結成初期の1965年から、Michelle Phillips と
メンバーのもう一人の男性 Denny Doherty の不倫関係は
始まっていた。彼らは関係を長期間にわたり、他の2人の
バンドメンバーに隠し通す事ができた。メキシコへの旅行中
Denny Doherty がその事をもう一人の女性メンバーの
Cass Elliot に打ち明けると、Cass Elliotは激怒した。
間もなくしてこの関係はリーダーでソングライターの
John Phillips の知るところとなった。この頃から今度は
Michelle Phillips と The Byrds の Gene Clark の
不倫関係が始まった。John Phillips はもはや
Michelle Phillips と演奏するのは耐えられないと言った。
その結果グループは1966年6月に Michelle Phillips
を脱退させる公式な報告書を起草した。
Dunhill Records の社長 Lou Adler は当時のガールフレンド
だった Jill Gibson に打診し、Jill Gibson は Michelle Phillips
の代役を務め The Mama's and the Papas のメンバーとして
活動した。Jill Gibson がグループでの活動2ヵ月半分の
報酬を一括で受け取ると同時に、Michelle Phillips は
8月の終りにグループに呼び戻された。
まあ美魔女二人によるぐちゃぐちゃな愛憎物語の
得意なアメリカならではの裏話ではあるが。。。（苦笑）
生前の Gary Zekley のコメントによると当時の Jill Gibson
は全身からフェミニンが放出されていて、逢えば誰でも
一目で恋に落ちるような女性だったらしい。
1967年に女流カメラマン Jill Gibson は Lou Adler を記者
としてモントレー・インターナショナル・ポップ・フェスティバル
に参加し、当時世界中で注目されてた参加パフォーマー達
の歴史的な写真を豊富に撮影した。Jill Gibson, 彼女は
美しく、才能もあり、激動の時代を見事に駆け抜けた
本当に逞しい女性である。

Greg Dempsey と Kathy Yesse (Kathy Dalton)
男女二人のデュエットで後に Daughters Of Albion となる。
Greg Dempsey の書いた素晴らしい楽曲による 2sider だ。
Frank Zappa 研究家達によるとA面 "First Night Flight"で
ファズギターを奏でているのが Frank Zappa 先生というから
彼らのシングルの中でもこの1枚は別格で人気が高い。
私的にはこのB面のブライトなラヴソングが大好きで、
年がら年中聴いている Alltime Masterpiece だ。
若き日の Kathy Dalton の歌声は Evergreen であるのと
やはり時代の息吹なのだろうか、1967年のロスアンジェルス
の若者達の躍動感がこの1枚に見事に閉じ込められている。

Nancy Adams - California Dream Boy

ソングライター、TVプロデューサーの
Floyd Huddleston の奥さんで、フィメールポップ
シンガー、そしてセッションシンガーとしても有名な
Nancy Adams の歌った隠れた名曲。
彼女は Frank Sinatra 等のバックシンガーと
しても有名で、このシングルのB面はそれを
物語るかのような、かっこいい Jazz Funk チューン
を聴かせている。作曲は夫の Floyd Huddleston で
作詞は元 Jazz Basist の George Romanis が担当。
George Romanis はその昔 New York の Madison に
Commercial Production Company を設立しており
Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Stan Getz, Eartha Kitt,
Bobby Vinton, Buddy Greco, Vic Damone らを
用いてテレビジングルを量産した。それが成功して
彼は Hollywood に進出、映画やテレビシリーズの
コマーシャルを手掛けた、Hawaii Five-O を始め
Streets of San Francisco, Twilight Zone,
Star Trek: The Next Generation, Barnaby Jones,
Air Wolf etc etc, そして彼がクレジットされた映画には
MGMスタジオの著名作品“Hollywood: The Dream Factory”
や“Of Mice and Men,” “Joe Dancer,”
“Helltown” (starring Robert Blake)
“Eight on the Lam” (starring Bob Hope)
“Oxford Blues” (starring Rob Lowe & Ally Sheedy)
“Kentucky Woman” (starring Cheryl Ladd)
らがある。そんな関係で本件作品はアレンジも
George Romanis が担当したのだが、プロデューサーが
Don Costa なので、どうやら Frank Sinatra 関係で
ラインが繋がってるようだ。で、この歌い手、ちっちゃくて
可愛らしい女性セッションシンガーの Nancy Adams は
歌が上手い！Shelley Fabares ほど甘すぎくなく、
でも可愛らしく、柔らかく心地よい風のようで、聴いていて
気持ちが舞い上がっていきそうになる。
単調になりがちな曲の構成だが、これは絶品だ。

ここで発表します。私はこの Linda Hall へ
彼女のレコードを売った事があります！
その昔、当店ホームページにオーダーがあり
本人の娘さんでしたが「母がこのオリジナル
シングル持ってないんだって」とオーダーしてきた。
で私は「お母ちゃん元気？」「うん元気よ」と
しょーもない会話で終わらせてしまったという
超バカな事をしてしまった。インタビューしとけば
良かったよ（笑）
Linda Hall - Hugo (Columbia Columbia 4-43067)
前年の1964年に語り調の不思議なポップソング
で彼女はデビューしていたが、翌年1965年6月
になって New York の弱小レーベルから
人知れずリリースしていたのが本件シングル。
Neil Sedaka - One Way Ticket (To The Blues)
邦題「恋の片道切符」でも日本では人気のある
作曲家 Hank Hunter と Stan Vincent は当時
Connie Francis のヒット曲を量産しており
このコンビが書いてるので、もしかして Connie Francis
が歌ったヴァージョンも録音されてるのかと勘ぐってしまう。

Carol Connors - Lonely Little Beach Girl

Carol Connors こと Annette Kleinbard は
ポーランド系ユダヤ人移民の両親を持つ。
彼女の親戚の多くはホロコーストで殺されており
彼女の父親は従妹と結婚した乗馬騎手だった。
彼女の母親の Gale Kleinbard は若い頃は歌手であり、
ワルシャワ音楽院でオペラを学ぶことになっていたが、
戦争が勃発し Annette Kleinbard の父親は
1938年に従妹の Gale Kleinbard をアメリカに
連れて行って結婚した。Annette Kleinbard が
5歳のとき家族は New Jersey 州 New Brunswick
から Los Angeles に引っ越してきた。
歌手だった母は夢を諦めて、二人の娘達、
姉 Annette と妹 Cheryl にピアノを習わせ始めた。
Annette Kleinbard は Fairfax High School
(フェアファックス高校) に通っている間、
彼女の中学時代からの親友 Donna Kass と
付き合っていたソングライター兼レコード
プロデューサーの Phil Spector に出会った。
Annette Kleinbard の声を聞いた後、Phil Spector
は彼女のために歌を書いた。Annette Kleinbard の
声に惚れ込んだ Phil Spector は彼女に会う度に
「$10持ってないかい？$10あれば君の歌声を
レコードに録音できる」としつこく言い続けた。
当時$10も持ってなかった Annette Kleinbard は
父親に頼み込んで$10を作った。
その後 Phil Spector, Marshall Leib, Annette Kleinbard
の3人は The Spector Three と名乗って活動を始め、
その後 Elvis Presley の歌 "(Let Me be Your)
Teddy Bear" が好きだった彼らは The Teddy Bears
とグループ名を変えてその後1958年9月22日を
ピークに全米1位の大ヒット曲となる名曲
"To Know Him Is to Love Him" をリリースする。
しかし1960年に Annette Kleinbard の運命は劇的に
変化する事になる。彼女は自動車事故に遭い、
マルホランドドライブの崖から350フィート離れた
ところまで彼女を乗せた車は落ちた。それは彼女の命が
ほとんど失われかけた大事故だった。彼女は大手術を
受けて助かったのだが、ひどく傷めた顔面を整形する
必要があった。彼女は言った「私の鼻を顔に正しく戻す
には4回の手術が必要で、私のステージ上で歌う
キャリアは終わったわ。私は自分の見た目について
とても恥ずかしくて自己嫌悪意識があったの。」
しかしその後彼女は Annette Kleinbard から
Carol Connors と名を改めて人気ソングライター
として復活した。復活をアピールしたくて自らを
美魔女としてプロデュースしたかのようなピクチャー
スリーヴを付けて1966年3月にリリースしたシングル。
彼女自身が作詞作曲をしたこの曲はB面扱い
でリリースされており、プロデュースは盟友
Marshall Leib, アレンジは Richard Podolor
が担当してるので、ギターは Richard Podolor
が演奏してるのだと解る。
Carol Connors の “Don’t Worry Baby” といった
作風のA面 "My Baby Looks, But He Don't Touch"
が Gold Star Studios で録音され、その美しい
エコーに魅せられるのに対して、こちらは
間奏部分もなく一気に歌い上げていくスタイルで
ヴォーカルミックスを聴いていると、デモセッション
をそのままリリースしたかのような曲だ。
それ故に急いでリリースしたのが垣間見れる。

Donna Lewis - Surfer Boy Blue

Donna Lewis は1963年から1964年までに
Decca で2枚のシングルをリリースして
消えたガールシンガーである。
本件は1963年10月にリリースされた
彼女のファーストシングルで、
プロデュースが Don Costa Productions, Inc.
そしてアレンジが Don Costa,
ソングライターが Zeller-Costa (Phil Zeller-Don Costa)
でこのコンビは Frank Sinatra, Trini Lopez 他に
多くの曲を書いている。
早い話がこの Donna Lewis は Don Costa が
可愛がってたシンガーなのだろう。
軽く C&W エッジがかかったサウンド故に内陸部の
セッションである事が伺える。
曲中で彼女の語りが入るメランコリックなサマーバラード
の傑作で、熱心なガールポップファンの人気が高い曲だ。

1947年7月4日に南アフリカの東ケープ州の
クイーンズタウンで生まれた女性歌手。
これは彼女のデビューシングルで Skeeter Davis
が1965年にリリースした曲のカヴァーヴァージョンで
John D. Loudermilk が書いた曲だ。
本件 Hilary のヴァージョンは1968年に南アフリカ
のトップ20で1位になり、19週間チャートに掲載され、
ゴールドディスクが授与された。
それを契機にアメリカでも本件シングルはプロモ盤が配布
されたがこの可愛らしいサマーポップは
残念ながらリリースには至っていない。

Robin Ward & The Rainbows - In His Car

The Beach Boys "In My Room" のアンサーソング
としても有名な隠れた名曲。
美しく涼やかなアイランドヴォーカルを聴かせる
人気セッションシンガー Jackie Ward だが
プロデューサー Perry Botkin Jr. も Jackie Ward の
歌声に魅せられていた一人だった。彼女はレコードデビュー
の際に娘の Robin の名を借りて Robin Ward と名乗った。
彼女の1963年の大ヒット曲 “Wonderful Summer”
は Perry Botkin Jr. が書いた曲で、彼は Robin Ward の
涼しげな声が大好きだった。
その昔海外のガールポップコレクター達の間で
「The Honeys の変名では？」と噂されていたシングル
がある The Joys - I Still Love Him (Valiant 6042)
これは1964年2月にリリースされたシングルで、
Gold Star Studios で録音されてるので、確かに
そう思わせるサウンドだった。Perry Botkin Jr. が
ガールポップのリリースを請け負ったので若き Harry Nillson
のコラボレイター Johnny Cole と当時流行ってた Teenage
Tragedy Songs (“Leader of the Pack” のような若者の
悲劇歌、死んだ恋人を歌う Death Song 等) を得意としていた
Radio Producer で Singer Songwriter でもあった
Jimmy Cross の二人が書いた歌 “I Still Love Him” を
ロスアンジェルスでセッションシンガーをしていた Jackie Ward
こと Robin Ward に打診した。しかし Perry Botkin Jr. は
この歌を Phil Spector Style の Wall of Sound にしたい。
そこで彼は Carol Connors にも歌わせ自らはバックシンガー
の男性ヴォーカルを担当したと Perry Botkin Jr. は後年に
なって語っている。録音は Wall of Sound や Beach Boys
の歌でも有名な Gold Star Studios だった。そういった経緯が
あり、その中間点である1964年5月にリリースされたのが
本件シングルだ。“Wonderful Summer” と同じで
Perry Botkin Jr. と Gil Garfield が共同プロデュース
をしている。直前に The Joys で Death Song を歌った
Robin Ward だが、ここでは The Beach Boys "In My Room"
のアンサーソングとして "In My Room" 同様に「車の中」と
いう内省的な世界を見事に歌いきっている。
因みにこの曲は Susan Lynne - In His Car
(Capitol Records 5201) とは同名異曲である。

Marcy Joe - What I Did This Summer
(7: Robbee R-115) 1961
Pennsylvania 州 Pittsburgh 出身の
フィメールポップシンガーで美しく涼やかな
アイランドヴォーカルを聴かせる。彼女は地元の
ソングライターであり、レコード界の大御所でもある
ヴォーカルコーチの Lennie Martin の生徒で、
彼女は1961年に当時のボーイフレンド Howard の
ために彼の名を変えて "Ronnie" を書いた。
その春に高校を卒業する予定だった17歳の彼女は
本名を Marcy Rae Sockel と言う。
その曲を気に入った Lennie Martin はピッツバーグの
United Recording Service Studio でシングルを
共同制作し、後にポップアイドルの Lou Christie として
名声を博した Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco こと
Lou Sacco と彼のグループ Lugee and The Lions
の助けを借りて "Ronnie" は録音された。彼女に
Marcy Joe の芸名を与え、Lennie Martin のレーベル
Robbee でリリースされたそのシングルは地元で大ヒット
になり、すぐさま Liberty Records に全国配給権を
与えたそのシングルは最終的に1961年5月22日を
ピークに全米81位のスマッシュヒットとなった。
しかしその後のフォローアップシングルは全く売れずに、
彼女は Philadelphia を拠点とする Swan Records に
移籍し、その際 Marcy Joe をクレジットミスで “e” を
入れていなかった為に仕方なく彼女は Marcy Jo に改名した。
本件シングルは Robbee 時代のフォローアップシングルで
"Since Gary Went in the Navy" のB面に収録された佳作。
A面は The Fleetwoods の男性歌手 Gary Troxel が
海軍に徴兵された事に触発されて書かれた曲だった。
この曲は当時 Jubilee レーベルの女性歌手
Roberta Wynn と競作になったがどちらもヒットしてない。
本件B面だが、作者の Arthur Altman-Wilbur Meshel は
Frank Sinatra, Del Shannon なんかに書いていたコンビ。
プロデュースはレーベルオーナーの Lennie Martin と
当時同レーベルのバックアップシンガーだった
Lou Christie が担当してる。
当時17歳の女子高校生が歌ってるとは思えないほどの
涼やかなアイランドヴォーカルを聴かせるサマーポップの
隠れた傑作である。

ロックンロール史上に燦然と輝く名曲スタンダード
Danny And The Juniors - At The Hop でも有名な
不世出のソングライターコンビ John Madara - David White
が書いたサマーポップで、この曲は1964年7月にピークで
全米116位というマイナーヒットとなっている。
The Pixies Three は1966年に The Beach Boys の
"You're So Good To Me" をフリーキーなガールパンク
ヴァージョンでリリースした Debra Swisher が在籍した
女性トリオで、Debra Swisher は後期 The Angels の
メンバーとしても活動した。そんな巨匠ソングライターコンビ
が書き、女性トリオの放ったサマーポップのマイナーヒット曲
だけでは済まされないのが、その曲調だ。これは明らかに
"Gonna Hustle You" (The New Girl in School) の替え歌
に近いような類似性を持つ。
Brian Wilson は1962年後半に "Gonna Hustle You" を
書き始めており1963年初頭に彼は Western Recorders Studio
でアセテート盤に録音している。当時 Brian Wilson の
ルームメイトだった Bob & Sheri でも有名な Bob Norberg は
"Gonna Hustle You" の歌詞を書いた。Brian Wilson はこの曲
を Jan & Dean に録音させようと書き、Jan & Dean は
1963年3月20日に録音した。しかし Liberty Records は
"Hustle" と言うワードが「彼女に性的な興奮を感じた男性を
イメージさせる」と解釈し、Jan & Dean にタイトルと歌詞の変更を
求めた。彼らは "Get A Chance With You" と歌詞を変えたが、
それでも Liberty Records は「示唆的に同じイメージをさせる」と
拒否した。そして Jan Berry と Roger Christian によって歌詞
が再度書き換えられ、この曲は "The New Girl in School"
と改められ Jan & Dean は1964年1月5日に録音、
そして1964年2月7日に "Dead Man's Curve" のB面として
シングルリリースされた経緯を持つ。すったもんだで１年以上も
経過した曲だ。結局ソングライタークレジットは以下のようになった。
Brian Wilson-Jan Berry-Roger Christian-Bob Norman
(Bob Norman とは Bob Norberg の事だ) この曲は1964年
3月14日にピークで全米37位のスマッシュヒットとなった。
A面 "Dead Man's Curve" が8位だったので結果的には
両面ヒットの大成功だった。余談だが1972年に
Dean Torrence は Legendary Masked Surfers ?名義で
"Gonna Hustle You" のシングルをリリースしている。
上記を考慮すると 「John Madara - David White による
The Beach Boys / Jan & Dean らのムーヴメントに対する
返答」といった立ち居地の曲と考えるべきなのだろう。

Joan Sylte, Deanna Sylte, Deanda Sylte
(Sil-tee シルティーと発音する) による美人姉妹のトリオ。
しかも Deanna と Deanda は双子である。
1953年にテレビのタレントショーで人気を博し、
彼女らは1962年の映画 Madison Avenue で
マイナーな役割を果たした。
A面 "Summer Magic" は1963年の
ウォルトディズニー映画のタイトルソング。
本件はシングルB面で、ティーン歌詞の
アップテンポナンバーで、サックスブレイクを
取り入れた魅力的なアレンジにされている。
レーベルオーナーでオーケストラコンダクターの
Tutti Camarata がプロデュースを担当。
彼は Annette のアルバム Muscle Beach Party
のプロデューサーとしても有名で、Buena Vista Records
の作品には多く関わっているビーチソングの名人だ。
作曲は Dee Odette で、この人は Eddie Grady
率いる The Commanders に多くの曲を提供しており、
恐らく The Commanders のメンバーだったのでは
なかろうか。それならばレーベルオーナーの
Tutti Camarata との繋がりが見えてくる。
ノヴェルティーサーフィンでも有名な
Dave York And The Beachcombers の Dave York
こと Dave Kinzie が作詞を担当してる。

Shelley Fabares - I Know You'll Be There

人気の美人女優 Shelley Fabares が歌う感傷的な
ラブバラードの名作。作者の Phil Sloan-Steve Barri
は "Don't Worry Baby" を意識してこの曲を書いている。
バックコーラスも彼らが参加しており、また Steve Barri
が書いた歌詞も素晴らしい。エンディングでリピートされる
Fadeout 部分でも新たな歌詞を追加しており、それは
Shelley Fabares の心象風景を表しているようで美しい。
プロデューサーの Lou Adler は子飼いの Jan & Dean
の同名曲でコロムビアピクチャーズによって映画化
された “Ride the Wild Surf” (撮影は1963年、
公開が1964年8月5日) に出演してた女優
Shelley Fabares と急接近し、1964年6月に二人は
結婚した。アレンジ＆コンダクターは当時 Lou Adler
の下で修行中だった若きソングライターコンビ
Phil Sloan-Steve Barri である。曲のイントロ部分で
聴かせるホルンが効果的で、丁寧にとつとつと
歌う Shelley Fabares の歌声にマッチしている。
Shelley Fabares は女優として Elvis Presley と
下記3本の映画で共演する
「フロリダ万才（Girl Happy）」（1965年）
「カリフォルニア万才（Spinout）」（1966年）
「ブルー・マイアミ（Clambake）」（1967年）
Elvis Presley を絶対的なアイドルとする Phil Sloan
からすれば夢のような作業だった事だろう。
1964年11月にリリースされた新妻 Shelley Fabares
が唯一 Vee Jay Records に残したのが本件シングルだ。
Chicago 生まれの Lou Adler は Vee Jay Records
にもコンタクトを持っており、黒人オーナーで R&B
専門のレーベルだった Vee Jay Records が
Four Seasons の移籍によって新たな分野を開拓し
始めていた計画を知る。Lou Adler が Shelley Fabares
を Screen Gems 系の Colpix から Vee Jay Records
に短期間移籍させたのは自身が設立した Dunhill Production
の配給契約を目論む Lou Adler の計画であった。
そのような経緯であれば普通に考えて妻のシングルをヒット
させようと夫なら努力するだろう。しかし Lou Adler は
将来自身のレーベル設立のために妻の Shelley Fabares
を Vee Jay Records でヒットさせないようプロモーション
をコントロールしている。何故なら Vee Jay Records は
西海岸でのセールスを強化するために子会社の
Tolie Records を California に設立したのだが、これが
既に経営難に陥っていた Vee Jay Records の権利売却
の為だった事を Lou Adler は知っていたのだ。
事実 Shelley Fabares のためにどんな優秀なソングライター
達が曲を書こうが、彼女のヒット曲は Colpix 時代だけである。
実は本件この曲は当時イギリスで話題となっており、
翌年 Phil Sloan 自らもソロでデモ録音している。
既に Phil Sloan の書くメロディーはアメリカはおろかイギリス
でも注目されており、その作風こそ Musician's Musician と
して彼がいまだ愛され続けている所以である。

彼女のレコードを売った事があります！
その昔、当店ホームページにオーダーがあり
本人の娘さんでしたが「母がこのオリジナル
シングル持ってないんだって」とオーダーしてきた。
で私は「お母ちゃん元気？」「うん元気よ」と
しょーもない会話で終わらせてしまったという
超バカな事をしてしまった。インタビューしとけば
良かったよ（笑） Coed (男女合唱) コーラスグループ
のバックと Sax ブレイクを導入した可愛らしい
アイドル系サマーポップの隠れた逸品。

The Surf Bunnies - Our Surfer Boys

元々 The Desirays を名乗っていたブロンド娘
Patty Brown, Pat Kent, Donna Schultz の
3人が Surfer らしく髪の毛をブリーチにして
The Surf Bunnies と変名した。彼女達の歌は
全て Gary Paxton のスタジオで録音されてるので
恐らく Gary Paxton が名づけたのだろう。
バックの演奏は全て当時同レーベルに所属してた
The Vulcanes が担当しており、実は彼らは
The Surfaris が "Wipe Out" のヒットで売れっ子
となった時に The Surfaris が未成年だった為に
全国ツアーのメンバーは The Surfaris 本体ではなく
後の The Mar-Kets のツアーユニットとしても
活動するThe Vulcanes (Valcanes) が The Surfaris
を名乗ってライブをした。そんな実力派がバックバンド
を務めているのでとても仕上がりが良い。
The Surf Bunnies のマネージャーで初期 Bobby Hart
とライターコンビを組んでいた Barry Richards が
ソングライタークレジットされており、プロデュースは
Bob Todd-Tony Butala が担当している。
レーベル名 Goliath は旧約聖書の「サムエル記」に
登場するペリシテ人の巨人兵士。
英語発音でゴライアスと言う。Hollywood の
North Vine Street に設立された同レーベルは
Tonto Music という楽曲出版社も合わせて設立した。
本件シングルは1963年8月に先ず Goliath がリリース
Surf Bunny Beach / Our Surfer Boys (Goliath 1352)
それを直ぐに Dot Records が買い上げて全国リリース
した際にはA面と B面を逆にされた。

本件、感傷的なバラード曲で、Our Surfer Boys として
Jan, Dean, Brian and Jimmy に捧げている。
間奏部分もなく歌われていき、語りを途中挟むのだが
そこで Jan, Dean, Brian and Jimmy と甘い声で
語りかけている。で、Jimmy って誰？
The Sea Shells - Love Those Beach Boys
(Goliath 1357) のB面でも "Close To Jimmy" という
Death Song を歌ってるので、それを示唆しているのが解る。
The Vulcanes のメンバー Jimmy と The Surf Bunnies
のメンバーの誰かが付き合ってたという説が
成り立つのだが、ジミー大西って事はありえないし。。。
もしかして The Honeys - From Jimmy With Tears
(Capitol Records 5093) の Jimmy なのかあ？？
1955年9月30日の俳優 James Dean (愛称はジミー / Jimmy）
の交通事故死以来、若者の悲劇の死の場合、男性の名称は
Jimmy と相場は決まってるのであった（爆）

New York 州 Bronx 出身の Lee Mareno は
Sal Corrente (後の The Dials / The Runarounds)
と Lee & The Silver Tones を結成しており、
彼女達は “Dream Girl” を含む幾つかの曲を
デモ録音したがリリースされた事はない。
後年 The Runarounds は “Dream Girl” を
録音している。
この美しいガールバラードは1968年に
Scepter Records SCE 12222 でプロモ盤のみが
再リリースされるが、その際クレジットは Lee とだけに
されておりソングタイトルも “Lonely Summer” と短縮され
そこでは The Runarounds のプロデューサー
Lou Cicchetti がクレジットされている。
本件シングルはクレジットされていないが
The Runarounds (Ex The Regents) がバックアップ
ヴォーカルを担当しているのでヴォーカルグループ
ファンにも高い支持を受けている隠れた逸品である。

Sharon Marie はいまだ多くの事が不明だが
当時の Mike Love の彼女だったという説が
有力である。間奏部を持たないこの曲は

バラードで、想いを募らせる女性の心情吐露といった
ストレイトな歌だ。そしてファンには有名だが
この曲は後に The Beach Boys - Darlin'
として歌詞、アレンジを変えてリリースされる。
